American Airlines change fees can vary depending on how much time is left before departure and how far in advance the flight is booked.
If you’re looking to change your ticket less than 48 hours before departure, you’ll have to pay a $150 fee. If you wait until 24 hours out from your flight, the fee will be $200. If you want to cancel a ticket after that point but within 24 hours of departure, it costs an additional $300.
If you’re trying to Change Your AA Flight Ticket less than 30 days before departure and you’re not booked in an American Airlines loyalty program, there’s a $75 charge per person. Suppose you are booked into a loyalty program or have purchased elite status with American Airlines or another Oneworld Alliance partner airline. In that case, there is no charge for changing tickets within this timeframe.

The fees for changing your tickets on American Airlines are as follows:
- $150 per ticket if you change your flight date or time by more than 24 hours

Basic Economy fares purchased on or after April 1, 2021, are nonrefundable and nontransferable. American Airlines Same-day flight changes are available on select flights for $75, but if your new booking is cheaper than your original itinerary and is affected by this change, you’ll receive a travel credit for a future trip that can be used for one year from the date of issue. American Airlines Non-Refundable Ticket change fees
If you need to change your American Airlines non-refundable ticket, we’re here to help.
Changing your travel plans can be stressful, but we’ve got a few tips to make it easier:
First of all, don’t worry about the fee if you change your ticket within 24 hours of booking. You’ll only pay $25 per person for same-day changes (plus the difference in fares).
If you want to make changes after that period, though, there’s a fee: of $200 per person (plus the difference in fares) for any changes made more than 24 hours after booking.
American Airlines does not allow ticket changes to be made without paying a fee. The type of change you make will determine the cost:
- Changing an international flight to another international flight—$200 USD
- Changing an international flight to an American Airlines domestic flight—$100 USD
- Changing an American Airlines domestic flight to another domestic flight—$150 USD
- Changing an American Airlines domestic flight to an international flight—$200 USD
American Airlines Refundable Ticket change fees
If you have a refundable American Airlines ticket and need to change your flight, there are two ways to do it. You can either cancel the ticket and rebook a new one, or you can use the original ticket for travel on another date.
Need to cancel the ticket, call American Airlines reservations. If your request is made at least 24 hours before your flight leaves, there will be no penalty fee. If you want to change your flight after that point, you’ll have to pay a $200 fee per passenger plus any fare difference for the new flight. If you plan on changing more than one passenger on your reservation, this fee will be multiplied accordingly.
If you’d rather keep your original ticket and use it for another date or time frame, simply call American Airlines reservations at least 24 hours before your original departure time and inform them of what date and time you’d like instead—no penalty fees will apply!
Refundable tickets are a great way to save money on airfare. However, if you want to change the date of your flight, you’ll need to pay some fees and taxes.
If you change your ticket from one day before departure to another date within the same calendar year, you’ll have to pay a $75 fee for each itinerary segment (one-way, round-trip or multi-city). This charge is waived if you choose another flight departing within 24 hours of the original time.
If you cancel your reservation or don’t show up for your flight and don’t have a valid excuse (e.g., illness), then there is no refund and no refundable ticket change fee will apply.
You can also change an open-jaw itinerary — where one side of your trip involves flying into one airport but returning from a different one — for $75 per segment in addition to any difference in fare price between the two routes.
American Airlines Award Ticket change fees
American Airlines offers a number of different award ticket change fees, depending on the type of ticket you have purchased.
The cheapest way to change your American Airlines award tickets is by purchasing an “open jaw” ticket. Open jaw tickets allow you to fly into one city but then leave from another city. This is ideal for those who want to see two cities in one trip and don’t mind paying extra for that convenience.
If you want to change your American Airlines award ticket price, you will need to pay a fee of $75 per person plus any difference in fare amount. In order for this fee to be waived, you must purchase your ticket at least 21 days before departure.
American Airlines cancellation fees
As per American Airlines Cancellation Policy, American Airlines has a no-fee policy for cancellations within 24 hours of booking. The only fee you’ll pay is the difference between the price you paid and what it costs to rebook at that time.
If you cancel after 24 hours, but before you’ve checked in, then you’ll have to pay $150 per person. If you cancel after check-in, but before departure, then it’s $200 per person.
However, if you cancel your reservation because of illness or injury, or if the flight is canceled for any reason other than weather or mechanical issues (e.g., pilot strike), then there won’t be any cancellation fees charged.
If you’re a frequent flyer and have already booked your tickets, you might be wondering if there is a way to get out of them. The answer is yes!
You can cancel your American Airlines flight for free if you have not yet checked in. If you have already checked in, American Airlines will charge $200 per person to cancel your reservation.
24-Hour Risk-Free Cancellation
If you’re traveling on American Airlines, and your plans change, you may be able to get a refund.
The airline offers a 24-hour grace period for cancellations and changes. If you cancel or change your ticket within that time frame, there’s no fee. But if you cancel or change beyond 24 hours of the original booking date, then the airline collects an administrative fee of up to $200 per ticket.
Basic Economy Ticket
If you have a Basic Economy ticket on American Airlines, you’ll need to pay a fee if you want to cancel it.
The most common reason for canceling your ticket is that your travel plans have changed and you can’t get to where you’re going anymore. If this is the case, there will be no fee for canceling your Basic Economy ticket.
If you need to change your flight times or date, you’ll need to rebook your ticket. If you’d like to cancel your trip entirely, please contact American Airlines Customer Service
Cancel Your Non-refundable Ticket
Your American Airlines non-refundable ticket cancellation fee will be determined by when you cancel your ticket.
If you cancel at least 24 hours before your scheduled departure time, you’ll pay a $200 fee.
If you cancel less than 24 hours before your scheduled departure time, but more than 6 hours before, the fee is $300.
Refundable Ticket
You can cancel your American Airlines refundable ticket up to 24 hours before your flight. You’ll be charged a $200 fee, which will be waived if you book another flight within 24 hours of canceling the original flight. If you don’t book another flight within 24 hours, you’ll have to pay an additional $200 cancellation fee.
Award TicketAmerican Airlines is a large airline that specializes in long-haul flights. The airline offers many perks, including frequent flyer miles and award tickets. However, there are certain fees associated with cancelling an award ticket.
If you cancel your own award ticket, you will be charged $75 for domestic flights and $125 for international flights. If a travel agent books the ticket on your behalf, then they will be charged a $150 fee if it’s domestic and $200 if it’s international.
If you cancel your award ticket within 24 hours of booking it, then you’ll be charged $100 per person plus taxes. If you cancel within 48 hours of departure, then the penalty is $200 plus taxes per person plus any fare differences that result in additional fees or charges (such as cancellation penalties).
American Airlines Seat Selection Fees
When you book an American Airlines flight, you’ll be charged an American Airlines Seat Selection Fee if you want to choose your seat before departure. If you don’t want to pay this fee, we recommend booking your flight without choosing a seat. However, if you decide to pay the fee, then make sure that you’re comfortable with the seat assignment as it will be nonrefundable and non-changeable.
We know you want to help your family and friends get the best possible flight with American Airlines, but if you’re not careful, you can end up paying more than you need to.
If you’re looking for a family-friendly carrier, American Airlines is one of the best options. Their flights are always on time and their customer service is top-notch. They also have a wide selection of in-flight entertainment, including movies and television shows, as well as radio stations. But don’t let yourself be fooled by those perks: there are still some hidden fees that can add up quickly.
One of the most common fees is the seat selection fee. This fee will be charged if you opt out of selecting your own seat during booking or when completing check-in online or over the phone. You’ll also be charged if you check in at an airport kiosk instead of using an agent or kiosk at an airport counter.
The fee ranges from $10-$50 depending on which aircraft type (economy, business class) and class (first class) are chosen by passengers during booking or check-in processes; this can add up quickly if multiple passengers in one family choose different classes/types of seats on different flights!
American Airlines baggage fees
American Airlines Baggage fees are a little bit different from other airlines. They offer two types of bags: checked and carry-on bags.
Checked bags start at $25 per bag when you book your ticket, but if you add it later, it will cost $50 per bag. If you want to check two or more bags, it will cost $75.
Carry-on bags are free when you book at least one day before your flight, but if you don’t book ahead, they will charge you $25 per bag. If you’re checking multiple bags, each additional bag will cost $50 each leg of your trip (for example, if you’re flying to Los Angeles and then San Francisco with American Airlines).

American Airlines priority boarding fee
American Airlines has a new way to get you on the plane faster: Priority Boarding & gets priority at check-in and priority security check when available at certain airports.
For just $7 to $75 or more per flight, you can skip what can sometimes be a long line. You’ll be first in line when it comes time to board, so you can get right on the plane and start your journey sooner.
If you’re not sure if you want to pay more for American Airlines Priority Boarding, consider this: If you want to make sure that your carry-on bags fit under the seat in front of you, or that you can get a seat near the front of the plane where there’s less turbulence, then getting to board first is definitely worth it.
