How much are the unaccompanied minor costs on Delta Airlines?

Delta charges a $150 (plus VAT) unaccompanied minor service fee for each direction of travel. The price will be in US dollars when leaving Canada or Europe, but it will be in Canadian or Euros when entering the US.

This cost will be charged for flights with either a non-stop or connected segment for domestic and international travel. Also, remember that this fee’s cost is extra to the cost of the ticket (the cost of the ticket).

This pricing includes accommodations for up to four kids. Therefore, even if four unaccompanied minors are in your group, you only need to pay the $150 service cost once. Your total out-of-pocket expenses would be $150 if you wanted to bring three kids on a flight with only one direction (plus tax).

Does Delta Airlines Allow Children And Minors to Fly Unaccompanied?

Given that Delta Air Lines is one of the biggest airlines in the nation and flies to destinations all over the United States, it is very likely that you are thinking about using it for the trip that your children will take. Children between the ages of 5 and 17 are given a chance to fly solo (as an unattended minor) through Delta’s Unaccompanied Minor Program without a parent, guardian, or adult travel companion.

The airline has specific travel policies for kids that vary depending on the child’s age. Additionally, unless there are no other options, flights for unaccompanied minors on Delta must generally be taken during the daytime. This is done to lessen the possibility of leaving your youngster stranded for the night. If none are available, then there is only one choice.

ALL CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF FIVE

If your child is under five when the flight takes off, you will not be allowed to board the aircraft with them. To fly, unaccompanied children must be at least five years old, and Delta does not make any exceptions.

CHILDREN BETWEEN 5 AND 7 YEARS OLD

Your child may fly as an unaccompanied minor if they are old enough and older than the age at which they are considered toddlers. Children between the ages of 5 and 7 must be reserved on non-stop flights, which means they cannot make any stops along the way for layovers or connections.

Suppose your child is flying to and from major cities where Delta services are situated in the same area. In that case, there is a significant probability that a non-stop flight will be available. These parts of the country include the West Coast, the Mountain West, the Midwest, the Northeast, and the Southeast. Sometimes a layover and a connecting flight are required when traveling from one small city to another small city or from one coast to the other.

CHILDREN BETWEEN 8 AND 14 YEARS OF AGE

The above restrictions do not apply to juveniles who are now considered adults, ages 8 through 14. This group of passengers is allowed to board flights and travel on itineraries involving stops, but the stops must be made on flights operated by one Delta, Air France, or KLM. No connections are possible with any of the other SkyTeam flights.

TEENAGERS WHO FALL BETWEEN THE AGES OF 15 AND 17

Unaccompanied Teenagers in this age group have two options when booking flights with Delta:

Option 1: No restrictions are placed on them, and they are allowed to fly as regular passengers, just like adults. To choose this option, Delta needs your child to have a form of picture identification that the TSA recognizes.

It’s crucial to remember that this policy, which requires having identification on hand, is specific to Delta. Children under the age of 18 are not required to show picture identification at the Security Screening Checkpoints (SSCP) operated by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) for domestic flights (the operative word being domestic). Because the TSA defers to airlines when it comes to particular and additional ID requirements, Delta Air Lines imposes them.

It’s also a good idea to make sure that your adolescent’s ID conforms with the REAL ID standard since having one will be a national requirement for traveling starting in May 2023. Around this time, if your teen is getting their first learner’s permit or driver’s license, there is a strong possibility that it already complies with the REAL ID act’s criteria. To confirm this status, please get in touch with the department of motor vehicles in your state, as each state handles compliance uniquely. A passport from the United States of America can always be used to board an aircraft if all other options are exhausted.

Option 2: As an extra service, older teenagers have the option to travel as unaccompanied minors, subject to the same rules as kids between the ages of 8 and 14.

It should be noted that even if an older child chooses to travel as an unaccompanied minor and the younger child opts out of the program, Delta still requires the younger child to travel as an unaccompanied minor in cases where only one of the children falls within the 15–17 age range. Even if the older child is riding as an “adult” passenger, this is still the situation.

These rules are similar to those of several other carriers. However, if your family finds this age restriction a deal-breaker, consider booking a flight with Southwest, JetBlue, or American Airlines. These airlines permit youngsters (such as siblings) 12, 14, and 16 years old to “accompany” younger children on flights.

Rules for unaccompanied minors on Delta Airlines

Limits on age

Children are subject to several needs and limitations based on their age. It’s critical to remember that their age is determined by their actual travel date rather than their age at the time the reservation was booked.

The child must be accompanied by a passenger who is at least 18 years old if they are four years old or younger and are not allowed to travel alone.

5 to 7 years old: Children between the ages of 5 and 7 are only allowed to board non-stop flights.

8 to 14 years: Children between the ages of 8 and 14 are permitted on flights that connect and those that do not.

Although children between the ages of 15 and 17 are permitted to travel as regular passengers, you can still pay for them to do so if you feel more comfortable with it. Passengers must be under the age of 17 to travel as children.

Flights with connecting routes

It is usual for individual airlines to impose strict rules on their passengers regarding the carriage of unaccompanied children on connecting flights with other carriers. You can connect through Air France and KLM if you purchase your ticket through Delta.

Medication

If your child requires the administration of any form of medication, Delta will be unable to do so in any way.

How to get reservations for a child traveling by themselves?

You must phone the unaccompanied minor reservations line, which may be reached at 800-325-8847, to make a reservation for an unaccompanied juvenile. This is a unique phone number set aside for kids traveling alone.

When making an adult reservation, you will be issued a four-digit PIN as a warning. Make sure you keep this PIN because you will need it to make any modifications to the itinerary.

Required paperwork for unaccompanied minor check-in

A Delta representative will not be allowed to complete the check-in process if an unaccompanied child shows up at the check-in desk by themself. A parent or other responsible adult must always be present when a child is checked in for the process to begin.

When registering an unaccompanied juvenile, the accompanying adult must present one of the following kinds of identification:

  • Document of identification with a photograph (License, passport, etc.)
  • the address associated with the ID
  • Contact information for more information
  • The name, address, and phone number of the adult who will meet the unaccompanied minor at the destination.

You will be liable for the expense of an unaccompanied child as soon as the agent receives all of your information. A Delta representative should also go over the program’s rules with you.

When you check in for your trip, you should receive a wristband for your child to wear during the flight. To track the minor’s location, this bracelet will feature a barcode that will be scanned at important points. It’s feasible that shortly, a more sophisticated tool will provide you with more information about the child’s location in real time.

Give the child an envelope to carry all the required travel documents in. A boarding pass, a form for unaccompanied kids, and any additional travel documents, including passports and baggage claim forms, will be placed in this envelope.

You must show yourself to the gate agent when you arrive at the check-in gate so they can confirm your identity. The adult designated by the company to supervise the child(ren) must wait at the gate until the plane has departed. When they say “departure,” they don’t just mean that you’ve walked out of the gate; they truly mean that the plane has taken off.

Take up

The person picking up the child must present a valid government-issued ID and sign their name on a log before leaving. Delta will not release the child to anybody else besides the person listed in the reservation to pick up the child.

Delta demands that the parent or other adult picking up the youngster arrive at the destination airport two hours before the flight’s scheduled arrival time to ensure they have enough time to receive a gate pass. The person must contact Delta to update the airline with the new information if, for any reason, the person designated to pick up the child needs to be changed.

When picking up the kid, the child’s parent or legal guardian must sign an acceptance of responsibility form.

Movements made while flying:

When it’s time for takeoff, a Delta Airlines employee will bring your child on board before the main boarding process starts.

In addition to giving the child ample time to take their seat and get acquainted with the airplane and some of its features, such as where the restroom is, it will also help give the flight attendants and crew time to introduce the child to them.

You will have to say farewell to your youngster while still in the terminal area because you won’t be allowed to bring them on the plane. Aside from that, keep in mind that if the jet needs to make an emergency landing at the terminal, you must stay nearby until it has left the gate.

Each nation has its own set of rules.

Children under the age of 18 who are traveling abroad alone are subject to several various limitations. The information on this page can teach you more about these requirements, but in the meantime, the following is a list of some of the more frequent restrictions you might encounter:

Mexico

A letter of consent from a notarized parent, translated into Spanish, is required for any underage traveler going to or from Mexico alone. They will only be let in if they have this documentation.

Italy

Unaccompanied Italian minors under 14 who are citizens of Italy will need to show additional paperwork when going abroad.

South Africa

Passengers traveling with kids must present additional paperwork to enter or leave South Africa. Both are entering and departing the country and are affected by this.

You are strongly advised to use WalletFlo for all your credit card management requirements. You can utilize it to maximize your savings and points for nothing at all!

Minor flying hints without an accompanying signal

The following tips should be kept in mind to ensure an unsupervised youngster has a nice flight experience.

Baggage

Reduce the quantity of carry-on luggage you bring to a minimum to lessen the chance that something may get lost. It’s a good idea to attach identification and contact information on their luggage’s outside or even the interior.

Food

On flights without meal service, travelers are advised to pack their food because the airline may offer snacks. In other cases, give the kid a specific sum of cash that they can use if they get hungry. Some parents permit their kids to use their debit or credit cards.

Entertainment

Additionally, giving your youngster some form of entertainment is a wise decision. The most sought-after items include tablet computers, books, and a variety of other toys and games.

Appropriately, inform the child.

Please make every effort to give your child the confidence and knowledge they need to travel independently. Tell them that the only individuals they should contact are Delta Airlines employees if they have any questions or need assistance.

Make it clear to them that they must always be escorted by a Delta Airlines employee wearing a badge if they choose to leave the airport or even the gate area.

Seated in a variety of cabins

A child must be between the ages of five and fourteen to participate in the unaccompanied minors program, and they must sit apart from an adult who is at least 18 years old in a separate cabin.
