Southwest Cancellation Policy & Fee: How to Cancel Southwest Flight

Can I cancel or change Southwest flight? As per Southwest cancellation policy, you may cancel your Southwest flight at any time before departure without penalty. However, if you cancel after this time and there is no one else who wants to take the seat, you will receive a full refund minus a $75 administrative fee. If another passenger takes your seat, you will receive a full refund minus a $150 cancelation fee.

Cancellation fees for Southwest flights are calculated based on how far away from the departure date you cancel your flight. The closer to your scheduled departure date that you cancel your flight, the higher the cancellation fee will be.

Southwest Cancellation Policy

Southwest cancellation policy does not apply to all tickets purchased. In addition to the ticket price, cancellation fees may be determined by fare class (Wanna Get Away, Anytime, or Business Select fares), travel region (for example, domestic flights vs. international flights), and ticket type (e.g., refundable or non-refundable). For example, if you cancel a nonrefundable Wanna Get Away fare before departure, you’ll be charged $100 plus any applicable change fees.

If your flight is canceled due to severe weather or mechanical issues at your origin airport, you’ll receive a full refund on the fare paid for your unused ticket plus any taxes already paid on the fare (if applicable).

If your flight is canceled because of weather at your destination airport but there are still seats available on another Southwest flight that can get you there within one hour of your original ETA, we’ll rebook you onto that flight for no additional charge!

Southwest Cancellation Policy is that they will not cancel your flight without first offering to rebook you on another Southwest flight. This means that if you are in the airport and your flight has been cancelled, they will offer to put you on any available flight within 24 hours of your original itinerary.

If you can’t get to your destination until more than 24 hours after your original itinerary, they will give you a travel voucher for the difference in cost between the original ticket and a new ticket. If there is no similar fare available, they will give you a check for the difference in price between the two fares (less any taxes or fees).

Southwest does not refund unused tickets but does allow customers to change their flights if circumstances change and this allows them to use the ticket again on another date. You can also change your reservation if it has been made over 24 hours in advance of departure and done by phone or online; however, only name changes are allowed at this point and not changes of destinations or dates of travel.

There are some exceptions to this rule:

If you’re traveling on a promotional fare, or if the fare has been reduced due to an oversell situation, then you may be charged a fee of up to $75 per person if you cancel your reservation within 24 hours of departure time.

If you have confirmed tickets for travel on Southwest, but then fail to show up for the flight without canceling in advance, then you may be charged a fee equal to 150 percent of the ticket price (plus taxes and fees) if you don’t call at least 15 minutes before departure time and explain why you won’t be traveling anymore.

Southwest 24-Hour Cancellation Policy

Southwest Airlines has a 24-hour Cancellation Policy. If you cancel your trip within 24 hours of the scheduled departure time, you are subject to the following penalties:

  1. For non-refundable tickets, you will be assessed a $100 cancellation fee per ticket and any difference between the fare paid and the fare for travel after the 24-hour period is calculated as a penalty.
  2. For non-refundable tickets purchased at low fare prices (e.g., Wanna Get Away® fares), you will be assessed a $100 cancellation fee per ticket and any difference between the fare paid and the lowest applicable published fare for travel after the 24-hour period is calculated as a penalty.
  3. For refundable tickets purchased at low fare prices (e.g., Wanna Get Away® fares), if you cancel your trip within 24 hours of departure, you will receive a refund less an administrative charge equal to $150 per ticket; otherwise, no refunds are given for cancellations made within this time frame.”

How to cancel a Southwest flight

Canceling Southwest flights is a simple process. You can cancel your flight up to one hour before departure, and you can also change or cancel your flight within 24 hours of the scheduled departure time. If you are planning to cancel your Southwest flight, here are some ways to do so:

Online: Cancelling your flight online is the fastest way to get rid of your ticket. You can cancel your ticket on Southwest’s website or by using their mobile app. If you’re cancelling through the app, you’ll need to have the confirmation number handy, which can be found in your email receipt or by checking your account history.

By phone: The next best thing after cancelling online is calling customer service at 1-234-I-FLY-SWA (231-8148) You can also chat with an agent through the website if you don’t want to talk on the phone.

In-person: If none of these options work for you, then go into any airport ticketing office and speak with an agent directly. If you’re already at the airport and need to cancel the flight, you can go to the counter and ask for a refund. You’ll have to pay a $75 fee, but it’s better than forfeiting your entire ticket. If you don’t want to pay that fee, you can get a credit on another Southwest flight within one year of your original date.

How to Rebook or Change your Southwest Airlines flight

Changing or rebooking your Southwest Airlines flight is simple. You can do it online, over the phone, or at the airport.

If you want to change or rebook your flight online, log in to your account and click on “Manage Reservations.” Select the flight that you need to make changes for, then click “Modify Reservation.” You’ll be able to see all of your current reservations here, including flights you’ve booked with others. The link to modify a reservation will only be available if there are seats available on the changed flight.

If you prefer talking directly with a representative, call (800) 435-9792 and ask for a representative who can help you change or rebook your flight. You can also speak with representatives at airports across the country by visiting one of their customer service desks.

If you’re booking with points and miles, Southwest will charge you $50 per person to change or cancel an award reservation. You also have the option of using points to cover any difference in price. If you need to make changes or cancel an award ticket within 24 hours of departure, however, there’s no fee at all — just call Southwest Airlines Reservations and ask them to rebook your flight.

You can change your flight online if it’s within 24 hours of departure by logging into your account on southwest.com and selecting “My Trips.” From there, select “Change Flight” under “Manage My Trip.” Select the date you’d like to fly instead, then follow the prompts to select your new flight options.

How Do I get a refund on Southwest Airlines?

Southwest Airlines offers a refund on your ticket if you cancel your trip. The airline has a 24-hour cancellation policy and will refund your money up to 10 minutes after you cancel. However, there are some exceptions to this rule that we’ll explain below.

While Southwest Airlines doesn’t have a fee for changing or canceling flights, it does charge change fees for some changes and refunds for others. To keep it simple, here’s what you need to know about canceling and changing Southwest flights:

If you cancel your flight before the departure time, you’ll get a full refund of the fare paid minus any taxes or fees that were collected at the time of purchase (these fees include things like booking fees). If you purchased with a credit card, then those fees also can be credited back to your card by calling customer service within 72 hours of booking your flight. If you purchased with cash or debit card, then tickets are nonrefundable unless they’re refundable by Southwest under its normal rules (see below).

If you show up at the airport on time but don’t board the plane, then Southwest will give you a full refund of any unused fare paid again minus taxes and fees — this includes tickets purchased with cash or debit.

Refund on Southwest Airlines For flights booked with cash

We will gladly refund your cash ticket on Southwest Airlines if you are unable to travel.

In order to receive a refund on your Southwest Airlines flight, the following conditions must be met:

You must cancel your reservation at least 10 minutes prior to scheduled departure. If you cancel after this time, you will forfeit any refund for the fare paid.

If there are changes in the schedule, we will make every effort to accommodate them. However, if we cannot make these changes without exceeding our time limits, we may have to cancel your trip. If this occurs and you have purchased a ticket through Southwest Airlines, you will receive a full refund of the amount paid for that ticket.

We reserve the right to deny refunds on tickets purchased with cash if there is no record of payment or if we do not receive the request within 24 hours of departure time or sooner if possible under these circumstances.

Refund on Southwest Airlines For flights booked with Southwest Rapid Rewards points

Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards members can now request a refund for flights booked with Southwest Rapid Rewards points.

If you book a flight using Rapid Rewards points, you can now ask for a refund in the form of a credit on your Rapid Rewards account. However, there are some restrictions:

  • You must cancel your ticket at least 7 days before the flight’s departure date.
  • You cannot cancel tickets that were purchased using cash or credit card (rather than points).
  • You must be flying on Southwest Airlines and be in good standing with the airline to request a refund.


How do I cancel my flight with one person on Southwest?

If you want to cancel your flight with one person on Southwest, you can do so by calling the airline’s customer service line at 1-234-I-FLY-SWA (231-8148).

You will need to provide your confirmation number and the reason for the cancellation. You may also be asked for your name and address, as well as the names of any passengers who will be traveling with you.

How do I cancel my flight on Southwest Airlines?

You should also check out Southwest’s flexible date policy to see if there’s an opportunity to move your trip to a different date. You can change your travel plans up to 24 hours before departure with no fees or penalties.

What happens if you don’t cancel before takeoff?

If you don’t cancel your reservation before takeoff, then there is no refund available. However, since Southwest allows two free changes with every ticket purchase, you could also try to rebook your flight for another time.
