According to United Airlines Unaccompanied Minor Policy, children between the ages of 5 and 17 years can travel unaccompanied after booking the service.

United Unaccompanied Minor Policy 2024

The United Unaccompanied Minor service is required for children ages 5-14 who are traveling alone or with someone who is not at least 18 years old. This service includes the following requirements:

  • Unaccompanied minors can travel on United or United Express non-stop flights only. They can’t use our unaccompanied minor service on codeshare flights and other flights operated by our partner airlines.
  • United Airlines does not offer unaccompanied minor services connecting to or from another airline’s flights.
  • Children younger than 5 can’t travel as unaccompanied minors, even if they’re flying with an older unaccompanied child.
  • Unaccompanied minors are ages 15-17 and are traveling without an adult on United and United Express-operated flights. Young adults can also travel alone.
  • The unaccompanied minor service costs $150 per child, each way.

United Airlines Unaccompanied Minor Policies and Fee

There is a $150 fee per child, which includes the return trip. That $150 fee is good for every two children using the service.
Unaccompanied minors are children 5 to 14 years old who travel without a parent or guardian 18 or older on the same flight.
Unaccompanied minor service is optional for those who are 15 to 17 years old.
United Airlines is offering a promotion for nonstop travel on certain routes. Only valid for travel on nonstop United or United Express flights.
The unaccompanied minor fee includes an assigned seat, a complimentary food item when available, and preboarding.
You can reserve these flights online by selecting “0” adults and the appropriate child age range.

United Flight Route for an Unaccompanied Minor

Unaccompanied minors on United flights can travel non-stop or United Express flights only. They cannot travel on code-share flights. For example, United is a member of Star Alliance, so you can’t book an unaccompanied minor on a flight operated by Air Canada, even though you could book it on United’s site

How to Book Award Space for an Unaccompanied Minor with United

You can book award space for an unaccompanied minor with United online like a standard award search. Additionally, you can call the reservation desk at 1-800-864-8331. Keep in mind that if you call you’ll pay a $25 fee.

If searching online, change the number of adults to “0” and indicate how many children will be traveling at their respective ages to find the available flights.

3-4 no of kids- the fee for one way trip is $300 and for the round trip it is $600.

5-6 no of kids- the fee for one way trip is $450 and for the round trip it is $900.

If two or more children are traveling together

When two or more children are traveling together, the youngest child’s age determines whether they will need to use United Airlines Unaccompanied Minor service.

  • Children younger than 5 years old need to travel with a parent, legal guardian or someone who is at least 18 years of age.
  • If the youngest traveler is between 5 and 14, and the oldest is between 15 and 17, then the younger traveler is still an unaccompanied minor.
  • If a 15-17 year old opts into the unaccompanied minor service and is traveling with another child, you should make sure to book their trip on the same reservation so that the combined service fee is applied to their flights.

We want everything to go smoothly and for you to have peace of mind, so we’ve outlined each step of your child’s journey. Checklists and tips make it easy. Who said this has to be stressful?

United’s Unaccompanied Minor Service:

  • For flights where food is served, one free food item will be provided to the unaccompanied minor
  • A staff member will escort the minor to their designated pick-up person
  • Arrive 30 minutes before the suggested check-in times for the departure airport
  • The child will receive special luggage tags and wristband
  • You may receive a gate pass in order to accompany your minor to their gate
  • Even if you don’t accompany the minor to the gate you must remain in the airport until the flight has taken off

United Definition of an Unaccompanied Minor

  • Children 5-14 who are traveling without an adult aged 18+
  • Optional for children 15-17
  • Fee for unaccompanied minor service $150 each way (covers up to two children)

United Unaccompanied Minor Routing rules

Unaccompanied minors may only travel on direct flights operated by United Airlines or United Express. Connecting flights are not allowed, nor are codeshare flights or any other flights operated by different carriers.

Identification requirements

Children under the age of 18 will need to present a passport or other internationally recognized photo ID when flying internationally. Otherwise, a photo ID and birth certificate are sufficient for check-in. Parents and guardians will also need to show a valid photo ID when picking up or dropping off the minor.

United Unaccompanied Minor Booking method

United Airlines allows you to book unaccompanied minors online. You can also call 1-800-864-8331, but there is a $25 fee for phone reservations.

Other restrictions

You may accompany your child to the gate for domestic flights, but United will assign a uniformed representative to escort your child if it is an international flight.

United Unaccompanied Minor Booking

You can book flight for your kid in a couple ways:

  • Visit united.com, Select the advanced search option, and change the number of adults to 0 from the default setting of 1
  • Then, select the number of children flying in each age range based on their ages on the day they’ll be traveling:

You can also call the United Customer Contact Center and a United representative will be happy to help you. There is a $25 booking service charge for reservations made through the Contact Center.

Things to know Before travel ad United Unaccompanied Minor

Even if your child has traveled before, or is a seasoned traveler, we recommend using this checklist to help them prepare for their trip.

  • Make sure your child knows the phone number of a trusted adult in case they need to call them.
  • Discuss with your child what they’ll experience at the airport, like going through security, finding their gate and boarding the plane, so they know what to expect.
  • Make sure they know to wait for a United representative to walk them off the plane when they land. Older children might feel like they can find their way through the airport alone, but as part of our unaccompanied minor service, we’ll need to make sure that they arrive safe and sound.
  • If your loved ones are bringing any electronic devices, make sure they’re fully charged before you leave for the airport.
  • You should pack some books or games to keep your child entertained during the flight. It’s hard to pack a lot of books or games for a flight, but you can bring some small ones for your child.
  • Some countries require all international travelers to complete an International Arrivals form before clearing customs and immigration at their destination. This form is handed out by flight attendants during the flight.
  • To make it easier for your child to complete this form, visit the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website to see a sample form. Write down the answers for your child on a small sheet of paper, placing it in their passport. Be sure that your child knows that if they have any questions, a flight attendant or United representative will be happy to help.

Remind your child that the United representatives at the airports and on board the plane are there to help ensure a safe, fun travel experience.

Before departure

You will want to give yourself at least 30 extra minutes at the airport on the day your child is traveling, in addition to the suggested check-in and airport processing times. Here’s how the process will work:

Check-in

  • Online and mobile check-in isn’t available for children traveling alone. We want to talk with you in person and make sure your child is ready to go. When you arrive at the airport, please go to the check-in counter.
  • We will verify the contact information for the adults designated to drop off your child and pick them up, or we’ll add this information to the reservation if it’s not included already.
  • What we’ll do for your child:
  • United will give your child a wristband to wear and special bag tags so United representatives and flight attendants can clearly identify them as a child traveling on their own.
  • Your child will receive a special envelope that they can use to keep their important travel documents safe and handy during their trip. This includes boarding passes, unaccompanied minor forms, their passport, baggage claim tickets, and receipts.
  • You’ll get a telephone number to call if you have any questions after your child starts their trip.

Going through security

  • Whether or not you’ll be able to go with your child to the departure gate depends on the departure airport.
  • Flights departing from the U.S.: When checking in at the counter, you’ll get a gate pass that allows you to go through security and to the gate with your child. When you get to the gate, introduce yourself to the United representative at the desk and tell them that your child will be traveling alone. Then, you can have a seat in the gate area to wait until it’s time
  • Flights departing from airports outside the U.S.: A uniformed United representative will meet you and your child at the check-in counter. The representative will help your child through security to the gate.

Even if you are unable to take your child through security, you’ll need to stay at the airport until the flight takes off.

Boarding

When you need to board early, your child will be among the first to board so that United flight attendants can:

Personally greet your child, Introduce your child to the pilots, if there’s time

Explain the safety features of the aircraft, Take your child to their seat and help with carry-on items

Point out where they can find the lavatories

United Unaccompanied Minor: During the flight

United Flight attendants will check in with your child throughout the flight. They will also be available by call button if your child has any questions during the trip.

Food

In flights that offer food for purchase, your child will receive one free food item. You might also want to pack their favorite snack. Please avoid gel or liquid snacks over 3.4 ounces, as they won’t be able to take them through TSA security.

At the arrival airport

Once your child’s flight has arrived, a United representative will meet them and bring them to meet the designated pick-up person.

For all U.S. domestic flights:

To meet your child at the gate, you can get a pass from the United ticket counter in order to go through security.
If you need a gate pass, ask for one at the United baggage service office. You can get information about your gate using the United app and on united.com/flightstatus.
If you arrive late enough at night that the TSA security checkpoint is closed, you’ll meet your child at the baggage claim assigned to the flight.

For all other international flights:

If your child is traveling on a flight that requires customs or immigration clearance upon arrival, you’ll meet your child in the greeting area on the arrivals level outside baggage claim.
In order for your child to be released to a designated adult, the adult will need to show ID so we can verify their identity. They’ll also need to sign a form that says they’ve accepted custody of your child.

United Airlines has updated its name change policy to make it easier for passengers to update their names on existing reservations. This policy overhaul reflects United Airlines’ ongoing commitment to enhancing the travel experience for its diverse customer base, aiming to provide smoother travel arrangements while minimizing unnecessary hassles.

In this article, we will provide an in-depth look at United Airlines Name Change Policy, covering eligibility criteria, the process for making changes, associated fees, and additional relevant information.

What are the eligibility requirements for United Airlines’ name change policy?

United Airlines does not permit name corrections as a substitute for substituting one passenger’s name with another. To rectify a misspelled name on a United Airlines ticket, the following conditions must be met:

  • The flights must be exclusively operated by United Airlines, and name correction requests are only valid for United’s segments.
  • Name corrections are not allowed once the United Airlines check-in process has been completed.
  • The ticket inventory must commence with code 016.
  • Only one ticket reissue is permitted for correcting names on United Airlines flights.
  • During travel, only minor name corrections for United Airlines are permissible, provided that the ticketed name exactly matches the government-issued photo ID.
  • Changing the passenger’s date of birth and gender is not allowed when requesting a name change on a United Airlines ticket. Modifications to the date of birth are only allowed for minor corrections resulting from errors made during the booking process.

Please note that United Airlines allows only one name correction per customer, and any further changes will be subject to their passenger name change policy.

Important note: Under United Airlines’ 24-hour cancellation policy, passengers have the option to cancel the flight ticket and rebook a new flight with the correct name on the ticket.

Which documents are necessary when submitting a United Airlines name change request?

To facilitate a United Airlines Name Change request, you will typically require the following documents:

  • A valid government-issued identification document, such as a passport or driver’s license.
  • In cases of name changes due to marriage or divorce, a Marriage Certificate or Divorce Decree is necessary.
  • For legal name change requests, a court order may be required to substantiate the change.
  • If the name change pertains to a minor, additional documentation such as a birth certificate or guardianship papers may be necessary. This also applies to United Airlines Unaccompanied Minors who are eligible for name change requests.

As per United Cancellation Policy, a traveler can request flight cancellation 3 hours before the scheduled departure for international flights. Similarly, domestic flights can be canceled before 2 hours.

You should know about the following other rules of United Airlines’ Cancellation Policy.

Some fees apply to United cancellation requests. The amount may vary depending on the trip type, fare rules associated with the reservation, and cabin class.

  • As per the United Airlines 24-hour cancellation policy, economy flight reservations are non-refundable and non-changeable after 24 hours of purchase.
  • If a passenger is marked a no-show for a flight, the value of the reservation may be forfeited.
  • If United Airlines cancels the flight, the traveler would not have to pay cancellation fees. Besides, if you deny taking the alternative flight, you will get a refund for the unused portion of the ticket.
  • In the event of the death of a traveler, immediate family member, or traveling companion, United will waive the cancellation fee. In that case, you will get a refund for the unflew segment.

United Airlines Ticket Not Refundable

Depending on the price class, you may be charged a cancellation fee of up to $400 for international flights and $200 for domestic flights if more than 24 hours have passed since you purchased your ticket.

After paying the cancellation fee, you can use the remaining value of your ticket to book a future trip with United. You must have canceled the previous ticket before the first flight’s departure in order to qualify for this, and your new trip must start no later than a year after the day the original ticket was issued.

United Airlines Cancelable Ticket (Refundable Ticket)

If you have reserved a refundable ticket, you have the right to cancel your booking at any time before the start of your flight, and a credit will be applied to the credit card you used to make the reservation within seven days (it should appear on your statement in 1-2 billing cycles).

The cancellation fee depends upon what kind of ticket you have purchased. As per United Cancellation Fee, the tickets are classified into four types:

  • United Refundable Tickets Cancellation: For a refundable ticket, you can cancel your tickets whenever you want without paying any cancellation fees unless you cancel the flight on the day of departure.
  • United Nonrefundable tickets Cancellation: For a non-refundable ticket, you can cancel the ticket, but you have to pay a cancellation fee of $200 cancellation fee on domestic flights and up to $400 for international flights depending on fare class if you are canceling after 24 hours from the point of booking.

United Airlines Cancellations Policy for Basic Economy Ticket

United Airlines will not allow you to cancel a basic economy ticket unless it is within 24 hours from the time it was purchased and was purchased a week or more before departure.

If you cancel your flight, you have the right to get a full refund of your unused Basic Economy tickets within 24 hours of your purchase. This applies to United-operated domestic and international flights.

If United cancels your flight, you may be entitled to compensation under the Department of Transportation (DOT) rules if it’s a domestic flight. There may be no compensation for international flights (unless covered by EU regulation).

United Airlines Cancellations Policy for Non-Refundable Ticket

When you purchase a refundable ticket on United Airlines, you can cancel your flight at any time without paying a penalty. You will get a full refund for the original ticket price. Keep in mind that refundable tickets often cost a lot more than nonrefundable tickets. What you get in return for the higher fare is the peace of mind that you will get your money back if you cancel your flight.

Be prepared to wait up to seven days for a refund. According to Frommer, the U.S. Department of Transportation has a regulation in place requiring airlines to credit you within seven days of receiving an application for a refund.

If it has been more than 24 hours since you booked your ticket, you will pay a $200 cancellation fee on domestic flights and up to $400 for international flights depending on fare class.

After you pay the cancellation fee, you can apply the unused value of your ticket toward a future trip with United as long as your new trip begins no later than 1 year from the ticket’s original issue date, and you canceled the original ticket before the departure of the first flight.

Hot Tip: Non-refundable tickets can still be refunded in the event of the death of the passenger or passenger’s traveling companion or because of military orders. Supporting documentation is required.

United Airlines Cancellations Policy for Refundable Ticket

When you cancel your flight on a nonrefundable United Airlines ticket, you will not get a refund. You can put the cost of your canceled ticket toward a new ticket, but you will be charged a change fee of between $50 and $150, at the time of publication, depending on your destination and the type of change you are making.

In the case of certain unplanned events, such as the death of a traveling companion or an immediate family member, or jury duty, United Airlines will provide a refund. According to its refund policy, an application can be made in those circumstances, and a refund will be issued, minus a processing fee of $50 at the time of publication.

If you’ve purchased a refundable ticket, cancellations can be made any time before the departure of your flight and the refund will be issued to your original credit card within 7 days (it should appear on your statement in 1-2 billing cycles).

United Airlines Award Ticket Cancellation

Cancel FeeGeneral Member Premier SilverPremier GoldPremier PlatinumPremier 1K
61 or more days before departure$75$50$25$0$0
60 or fewer days before departure$125$100$75$50$0
No-Show$125$125$125$125$125

The fee for canceling your award ticket and having your miles redeposited can vary greatly depending on your status level with United.

If you cancel your flight 61 or more days before departure, the fee is $75 for general members, $50 for Silver members, $25 for Gold members, and $0 for Platinum and 1K members. If you cancel your flight 60 or fewer days before departure the fee is $125 for general members, $100 for silver members, $75 for gold members, $50 for Platinum members, and $0 for 1K members.

If you no-show for your flight you will need to pay $125 to have your miles redeposited, regardless of your status level.

For same-day changes on award tickets, United charges $75 for Silver and general members. Elite members at the gold level or above will have the fee waived.

United Airlines Paid Ticket Cancellation

Canceling or changing paid United tickets that aren’t covered by a travel waiver or another special circumstance is subject to certain fees imposed by the airline. However, there is one type of paid United ticket that isn’t eligible for changes or cancellations: Basic Economy fares. Unfortunately, these can only be adjusted under very specific circumstances.

If you’re not eligible for a waiver, you’ll be subject to one of the following fees if you choose to cancel or change your United flight.

TICKET TYPECHANGE/CANCELLATION FEE
Basic EconomyN/A (not allowed)
Nonrefundable ticket$200 for domestic tickets$200 — $400 for international tickets
Refundable ticket$0

As you can see, international United flights can cost up to $400 to change or cancel depending on your ticket’s fare class. United doesn’t publish how much each fare class costs to change, so call United or start the cancellation process on the carrier’s website to see the fee for your flight.

Generally, United won’t issue refunds to your original form of payment for canceled tickets. Instead, you’ll be issued a travel certificate that you can use for a future flight. This certificate will be for the value of your ticket minus the cancellation fee incurred. For example, in the case of a $300 domestic ticket from Newark (EWR) to Chicago-O’Hare (ORD), you’ll receive a $100 voucher — the $300 from the original flightless the $200 cancellation fee. Note that these vouchers must be used within one year of your original ticketing date.

How to Cancel a United Airlines Ticket Without Paying a Fee?

Don’t you want to avoid losing a lot of money by only canceling your tickets? Do you fear that United Airlines will revoke your reservation and demand payment in full? On the other hand, there is a way around this, according to Unite Airlines’ cancellation policy.

You should be able to avoid incurring any fees or expenditures related to canceling your ticket if you follow a few simple rules. The details are listed below:

You could cancel without paying a fee within the first 24 hours of your trip if you bought your ticket at least seven days before departure. If you do it this way, there are no fees associated with canceling flights. Even better, the airline will return the refund to your original payment method.

This will affect none of your group ticket reservations or any tickets you purchased with an e-certificate.

A passenger may be entitled to compensation in the form of a travel credit if their aircraft is delayed by more than six hours. Passengers can ask for a refund for the original form of payment if they do not use the credit for the entire calendar year.

As a result, anytime a flight is canceled for factors like low demand, environmental concerns, weather warnings, etc., passengers are entitled to a refund for the full cost of their tickets.

Furthermore, you will get a full refund if you cancel your reservation due to an emergency, like the death of another passenger, or because you are in the military or working as a jury duty officer.

Is it better to cancel the United flight or change it?

Some travelers prefer to cancel their flight rather than change it. But changing your flight is almost always the best option.

If you cancel a flight, you typically forfeit its full value. The only exception is if you have a non-refundable ticket and cancel within 24 hours of booking, in which case most airlines will give you a full refund (although some airlines, like United and Delta, charge $200 for a cancellation).

Another reason to change your flight instead of cancelling it is because it’s not uncommon for airlines to charge a fee for cancelling — especially if you are cancelling an award ticket, which is not allowed on some airlines at all.

If you change your flight instead of cancelling it, the airline might charge a fee for that too. But that fee is usually less than the cost of cancelling a ticket!

  • If you cancel, you’ll get a voucher for the price of your ticket, minus a $200 penalty. That’s usually less money than if you just change.
  • If the fare will be less than the value of your ticket (including the penalty), then it’s more complicated. You need to consider whether:
  • you’re willing to pay the difference (plus perhaps some extra fees) to change;
  • the value of being able to choose when to fly outweighs the savings and convenience of getting a refund;
  • you have enough flexibility in your schedule that you can switch to almost any other date with no trouble; and
  • you’d prefer not to lose all current benefits (mileage credits, seat assignments, upgrades) associated with your existing reservation.

Can I cancel a United flight booked with miles?

Yes, you can cancel a United flight booked with miles. You’ll be charged $125 per ticket for domestic flights, or $200 for international flights, according to United’s cancellation policy.

If you booked your flight with a credit card that offers travel insurance, you may be able to get the cancellation fee refunded. The Platinum Card® from American Express and the Chase Sapphire Reserve® both offer up to $100 per ticket in airline fee credits every calendar year (meaning January to December).

United Airlines refund policy for your canceled trip

United Airlines offers a full refund for flight cancellations within 24 hours of booking. But in some cases, you’ll get a refund or a credit for future travel when your ticket is canceled. Here’s what you need to know about getting your money back on United Airlines flights.

United Airlines refund policy: If United cancels your flight, changes it by more than 60 minutes or if you’re a MileagePlus Premier member, you can request a full refund instead of rebooking.

Passengers who make changes to their tickets after they book may also be eligible for a refund depending on the fare class and how far in advance they make the change.

How to use a United future flight credit to rebook

The process for rebooking with a future flight credit is a little clunky. To get the most out of it, you have to call United. However, the airline has been known to offer credits for flights that haven’t been canceled and are still operating.

With a little work, you can use those credits to book a new flight or upgrade your upcoming travel if you’re willing to rebook a flight on the same day as your original one. Here’s how:

Call United Airlines. The representative will ask how they can help you and explain that you’re rebooking with a future flight credit.

FAQs:

What happens if I have to change or cancel my United reservation?

The type of tariff you paid and whether or not you bought a ticket that permits a refund will determine this.

You will no longer be able to return a basic economy ticket for a refund once the initial 24-hour grace period from when your ticket was purchased has passed.

You may be required to pay an extra fee of up to $400 for domestic tickets and $200 for international locations if your ticket is nonrefundable (depending on the length of the flight, location, and type of fare). After that, you will receive a credit that may be used to buy tickets for upcoming United flights in the amount of the remaining balance of your ticket, less the cost.

If you have a refundable ticket, you can cancel your reservation any time before your flight takes off, and your money will be returned to you in the same way you paid for the ticket.

Can I change or cancel my United reservation during the first 24 hours?

No matter the fare, the customer will not be charged a cancellation fee if they change or cancel their reservation within the first twenty-four hours of making it if the ticket was purchased at least a week before departure. This guarantee is valid if the ticket was bought at least a week before departure.

What are the repercussions of having to cancel a nonrefundable flight?

A fee ranging from $200 to $400 must be paid if you wish to cancel a nonrefundable ticket. The length of the flight, the destination, and the kind of fare all play a role in calculating this fee. Your unused portion of the fare will be added to a credit that you can use to make a purchase from United in the future.

When does the balance on my United credit card expire?

Your credit will expire exactly one year from the date it was issued.

Is there a fee from United if I cancel my reservation?

If you are qualified for a charge waiver, your reason for canceling the flight will be considered. If a member of your close family passes away, becomes ill, or is placed on military orders, United Airlines might waive your cancellation fees, but they’ll probably also need documentation.

Call and ask if you have a legitimate reason to think you shouldn’t be compelled to pay the cancellation penalty associated with your reservation.

Does United charge a cost if amendments are made on the same day?

Although there is no additional fee for altering award tickets, United charges Silver and general members $75 to change paid or award tickets on the same day. Elite members who have attained the Gold level or higher will not be needed to pay the membership fee.

Is there a fee if I have to cancel a United Airlines award ticket?

You won’t be charged anything for canceling your award ticket if you notify United at least 31 days before your journey.

If the flight is canceled 29 days or less before departure, the cancellation fee is $125 for general members, $100 for Silver members, $75 for Gold members, $50 for Platinum members, and $0 for 1K members.

Can I change my Basic Economy ticket within the first twenty-four hours of booking?

United won’t let you change a Basic Economy ticket, even if you decide to change your mind within 24 hours. The only options available are to rebook or cancel the already-purchased ticket. You will not be charged a cancellation fee and will instead receive a full refund for the ticket that you canceled because you are still within the 24-hour grace period.

On United Airlines, passengers with the same name and photo ID can board. Therefore, if you have accidentally written the wrong essentials of your name before boarding the flight, you need to know how to correct it. You can correct name differences in accordance with United Airlines’ policy if any exist.

Highlights on United Airlines Misspelled Name on Ticket

If you need to correct the wrong name on United Airlines airline tickets, wrong last name on United Airlines airline tickets, or complete name change scenarios, you must be aware that United Airlines only allows minor name changes. Essentially, the passenger cannot change their entire name or any part of it on the United ticket.

A traveller has to abide by the following criteria to make corrections in their name:

  • · United Airlines must operate the flight.
  • When United Airlines operates a code-share or interline route, name correction requests will be honoured on United’s part of the route.
  • Ticket inventory should begin with 016.
  • ·A passenger is only allowed one reissue per ticket when doing a name correction on United’s ticket.
  • If a customer requests additional changes to the name on their United Airlines ticket, those edits will be considered a name change. Consequently, such additions will be subject to United Airlines’ name change policy. Therefore, the ticket price will increase.
  • According to United’s name change policy, no changes can be made to flight dates, times, fares, or base codes.
  • Only minor changes to the passenger’s name are allowed, and those must match the government card.
  • The passenger cannot modify his or her date of birth or gender with the request to change the name on the boarding pass.
  • Changing the customer’s name and date of birth is subject to United Airlines’ policy.
  • Travelers can only correct minor mistakes in their date of birth while making reservations.
  • In the event that you wish to make further corrections to your United Airlines reservation, you will have to pay an additional fee to complete the changes.

Types of United Airlines Name Correction Policy

A name change policy at United Airlines allows a passenger who mistakes the spelling of their name during reserving a ticket to eliminate the inconvenience. There are three categories of name changes.

The following are three types of Name change policies under United Airlines:

Category 1 – Simple Modifications in a Name

The standard procedure will be followed to correct the passenger’s name on the ticket if it is incorrect. The United Airlines name correction policy states that simple mistakes on a reservation ticket don’t require documentation. This applies to spelling errors or a few letter errors only.

Examples of simple name modifications are:

  • Incorrectly spelling the first name Charli and the last name Mathwe to Mathew, for example.
  • A reservation can be modified to or from a nickname, such as Ally to AL.
  • A ticket can be corrected by changing the prefix to Mrs or Mr. to Dr.
  • On a boarding pass, change the middle name from Elizabeth Richard Smith to Elizabeth R. Smith.

Category 2 – Significant Modifications in a Name

It is common for United airline reservations to change in marriage or divorce, where you are required to provide supporting documents. These changes are much more substantial than the simple ones. When you are married or divorced, you are required to provide supporting documents. Significant changes frequently occur in these instances.

  • A passenger must present the following documents in order to change their name legally:
  • When divorcing, you must present the papers outlining the settlement.
  • If you change your name after marriage, you must show a legal document supporting the change.
  • Changing your full name requires a government-issued document that shows both your old and new names.

Category 3 – Affidavit with an Alternative Name

You may not have the legal documentation to support your name change. United Airlines’ name change policy allows customers to change their names by presenting an affidavit that contains an alternative name in such a case. The affidavit allows a passenger to change the name on their ticket. A traveller can also obtain a copy of their photo ID with the help of the affidavit.

It is likely that if your wrong name condition is not listed above, you will need to cancel your United flight and rebook. Read the United flight cancel policy and find out how your money can be refunded after you have rescheduled your flight.

How to Change the Name on the Ticket under the United Airlines Name Correction Policy?

As a result, United Airlines provides numerous options when it comes to changing names on tickets.

Following are the methods United Airlines allows you to change a name:

Method 1 – Name Change Via Affidavit

If a passenger is unable to present any legal documents to the concerned body, you must submit an affidavit requesting a name change on the boarding pass. If you wish to apply for a name change through this method, you will need a copy of an affidavit. In addition, you must send the notarized documents to the address given below:

Center of Service for MileagePlus, Postal Code 1394, 77251-1394 Houston, TX

Method 2 – Rectify Name Via Phone Call

There are times when a passenger needs to change their name on an urgent basis, and in such cases, a telephone call to the airline officials is most appropriate. A United Airlines agent will be able to assist you with name corrections on your ticket. When you dial the client service number, a representative will answer your call and take your request further.

According to the information you provide and the policy regarding name changes, the representative will apply the necessary changes to your name.

To avoid potential security and check-in problems, it is generally recommended to write your name exactly as it appears on your passport on the ticket. Whenever you book your tickets, it is recommended that you add your middle name, if your passport/government-issued identification includes it.

United Airlines Name Change Charges

In order to change the name on the ticket, a fee is charged. The fee is $75 if the name change is requested within 24 hours of booking.

United Airlines has recently changed its flight policy. The new policy will allow passengers to change flights up to 24 hours before their scheduled departure time, as well as for free, with no penalties. This means that customers can now make changes to their plans without having to pay extra fees or forfeit their tickets.

The reason behind this change is that United Airlines wanted to make it easier for customers who wanted to change their itineraries due to unforeseen circumstances. The company hopes that this will allow them to retain more customers and improve their customer satisfaction ratings.

Knowing about United Airlines’ change policy is very important, as there can be times when you need to change any of the segments of your flight. If this happens, you must look at the flight change rules to proceed with the next steps.

You should know policies about the United Airlines change flight, whether you have bought it from United MileagePlus miles or Cash.

United Airlines has a very strict flight change policy. The airline allows the following changes:.

United Airlines Flight Changes

United Airlines Date change: You can make a date change within 24 hours of booking for $75 per person. This price includes any differences in fare. If you want to make a non-refundable ticket refundable, it will cost you $200 per person.

United Airlines Flight time/route change: You can make this type of change one time for free within 24 hours of booking. After that, it will cost $200 per person if you want to keep your original dates but change the times or routes.

United Airlines Stopover/open jaw: This kind of modification is allowed with no additional charge if you book an award ticket that has more than one segment on United Airlines or another Star Alliance member airline. If you book a non-award ticket, it will cost $200 per person plus any difference in fare.

Here we have provided every single point of this policy so that you won’t face any issues while changing your reservations with United Airlines

United Airlines allows passengers to change their flight date and time for $200 per person. You can change your flight within 24 hours of your original booking and make changes to nonrefundable tickets as well as refundable tickets.

In addition to these fees, you will also need to pay any difference in fare if your new flight is more expensive than your original fare. You’ll also be charged a difference in fare if the new flight is less expensive than your original one but only if you’re able to book it within 24 hours of booking your original ticket (or within 24 hours of making changes).

If you need to change your flight, first check out the rules for making changes on different types of flights. Then follow these steps:

  • Log in to My United using your MileagePlus number and password. Click “Manage My Booking” under the “My Trips” menu option.

United Airlines Flight Change Fee

United Airlines has a very strict policy on how to change your flight and how much it will cost.

The United Airlines change fee policy is as follows:

  • United Change fee for any fare class: $75
  • United Change fee for refundable fares: NA
  • United Change fee for nonrefundable fares: $200 for domestic flights, $300 for international flights

United Airlines Basic Economy Tickets Change Fee

The United Airlines basic economy ticket change fee is $200. If you purchased a United Airlines basic economy ticket, you can cancel your flight and receive a refund as long as you do so within 24 hours of booking. After the 24 hour period, the ticket is non-refundable.

If you are looking to change your United Airlines basic economy flight, you will need to pay the $200 change fee if you are within 60 days of your travel date. The only exception is if there was a schedule change or irregular operation made by United Airlines.

If this occurs and it affects your original flight time, you can make a one-time change to your reservation without paying the $200 fee.

If you are looking to make changes to your trip that involve using a different fare class, you will have to pay the difference in fare plus the $200 change fee for any flights affected by the changes.

United Non-Refundable Tickets Change Fee

If you’ve booked a non-refundable ticket on United Airlines, you may be able to change or cancel your reservation without paying a fee.

Here’s what you need to know:

United’s change fees are generally $200, but if the difference in fare is higher, you’ll have to pay that difference as well.

However, there are ways to avoid those fees.

If you’ve booked a preferred seat for your flight, you’ll have to pay an additional fee for any new seat assignments.

You can use United’s online refund request tool if your flight is canceled or significantly delayed, and if your ticket is eligible for a refund.

United Refundable Tickets Tickets Change Fee

Let’s say you want to make changes to your United Airlines flight, but don’t have the flexibility to change your dates.

Not to worry: With a refundable ticket, you can change just about anything without paying any fees — including the dates.

The only thing that’s not refundable is any additional fees, such as the cost of changing your seat assignment or upgrading to a more premium flight.

United Award Tickets Tickets Change Fee

You can change your United flight award tickets the same way you would change a regular paid ticket.

Award flights can be changed online at united.com, or by calling United. There is a $75 fee if the change is made less than 21 days before travel. The fee is waived if you have United Premier Silver status or higher. If you’re not a frequent flyer, it’s possible to get credit card status by applying for the United Explorer credit card (affiliate link).

You can only change to another award flight with available seats in the same class of service (i.e. economy) as the original flight. You’ll also need to pay any difference in miles and taxes.

United Airlines Basic Economy Flight Change Policy

United Airlines has a strict policy when it comes to changing your flight. If you’re flying with the airline’s basic economy class ticket, you can’t change your flight at all — not even if you’re traveling on an award ticket.

If you want to make changes to your itinerary, basic economy tickets come with a few restrictions. You can only make one change per booking and must pay any applicable fee. As with most airlines, United charges $125 for domestic flights and $200 for international flights. To make a change, call United or visit your nearest airport ticket counter.

The first step to changing your United Airlines Basic Economy ticket is to cancel your existing reservation. If you have not yet purchased the ticket, this is a refundable transaction. However, if you have already purchased the ticket and are canceling it due to a change in plans, there is no refund available.

The second step is to purchase your new ticket and make sure that it meets the requirements of your original booking class. This will ensure that you will be able to change your flight and avoid paying any additional fees.

If you do not meet these requirements, you may be required to purchase a new ticket at full price before being allowed to change your flight.

Basic Economy tickets can’t be changed, and refunds aren’t allowed except as stated in the United 24-hour flexible booking policy. After 24 hours, Basic Economy tickets may be eligible for a travel credit when canceled, less a Basic Economy cancellation charge starting at $99 for a roundtrip itinerary.

United Airlines Non-Refundable Tickets Flight Change Policy

Most United tickets are nonrefundable, which means you’re not going to get cash back. However, you may be eligible to apply the value of your ticket toward the price of a new ticket with its travel credits.

For Economy tickets, there is a $200 change fee plus any applicable difference in fare.

For BusinessFirst tickets, there is a $300 change fee plus any applicable difference in fare.

If you want to cancel your flight altogether and get a full refund, United Airlines will refund your ticket completely if it’s cancelled within 24 hours of booking or if there are fewer than seven days left until departure. If it’s cancelled before then — for example, if you realize after booking that you have other plans — there will be no refund unless another passenger agrees to take over your seat on the flight and pays the difference between their fare.

United Airlines Refundable Tickets Flight Change Policy

United Airlines has a flight change policy that allows passengers to make changes to their ticket at no extra cost before departure. This includes changes such as adding or removing stopovers, changing travel dates and times, and changing airline carriers.

When you make a change to your ticket, United Airlines charges a fare difference based on the new itinerary’s price. The fee is calculated by taking the difference between the cost of the original ticket and the cost of the new ticket, then adding on any additional taxes and fees that apply to your new itinerary.

United Airlines has a number of policies for flight changes and cancellations. If you purchased your ticket with a refundable fare, you can change or cancel your reservation for free up to 24 hours before departure. After that time, you will be charged $200 per ticket for changes to the origin or destination city, or $300 per ticket for changes to the travel dates (including date changes).

If you purchased your ticket with a non-refundable fare, you can change or cancel your reservation for free up to 24 hours before departure. After that time, you will be charged $200 per ticket for changes to the origin or destination city, $300 per ticket for changes to the travel dates (including date changes), and $400 per ticket if the change involves an upgrade in class of service (for example, upgrading from coach to business class).

United Airlines Award Tickets Flight Change Policy

United Airlines generally allows you to change award tickets. However, there are some restrictions that you should be aware of before making any changes.

Changes made within 24 hours of departure will result in the cancellation of your entire itinerary and the refund of your miles. This is especially true if you are making a change to an award ticket with a fixed mileage value.

If you make changes more than 24 hours before departure, you will be charged a $75 fee per person for all changes made on or after ticketing. The fee is waived if the itinerary includes tickets purchased from United Airlines or United Express (operated by SkyWest and ExpressJet).

Changes made within 24 hours of departure will result in the cancellation of your entire itinerary and the refund of your miles. This is especially true if you are making a change to an award ticket with a fixed mileage value.

Useful Resource

United Airlines Standby Policy

The United Airlines Standby policy is fairly simple. It’s intended to allow passengers who miss their scheduled flights to board the next available one. In order to benefit from this policy, you should arrive at least two hours before departure and be ready to wait for several hours until a seat becomes available on an earlier or later flight.

When Can You Use United Airlines Standby Policy?

If you miss your scheduled flight due to delays caused by weather or mechanical problems, you can use the United Airlines standby policy to get on another flight with no penalties or fees. However, if your missed flight was due to late check-in or other issues that were within your control, then you are not eligible for this benefit. If you miss your scheduled flight because of poor planning (i.e., failing to arrive at the airport in time), then it doesn’t matter whether it was delayed or not – you won’t have access to this benefit as well.

United Airlines Standby Policy: How It Works

United Airlines Standby Policy gives you first priority when there is an empty seat on your flight. You can wait in line at the gate and be the first person to board, or you can wait in line at the airport and be the last person to board. If there are no open seats available on your flight, you will not be allowed to fly standby. To use United Airlines’s standby policy, follow these steps:

  1. Check-In Online/Mobile App: Depending on when your trip begins and ends, check-in online 24 hours before departure or up until 60 minutes prior to departure time (if traveling internationally).
  2. Get Boarding Passes Before Arriving At The Airport: Go online or use the mobile app of United Airlines and print out boarding passes before arriving at the airport so that you don’t have any problems when checking in for your trip. You can also use mobile boarding passes

Standby Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for standby travel, you must meet all of the following requirements:

You must be a current United MileagePlus Premier® member or United MileagePlus Explorer℠ member. If you are not yet a member, please refer to our Membership Benefits page for more information about how to join.

You must have all required documentation and identification available with you at check-in.

You must be able to get to the airport within 90 minutes of your scheduled departure time if accepted onto an earlier flight in place of another passenger who has canceled his or her reservation; otherwise, we will not permit your travel on standby status. Please note that some airports may require additional time depending on traffic conditions and weather conditions at the airport during your scheduled departure time. We cannot guarantee that any standby traveler will arrive at the airport in time for their scheduled departure due to traffic or weather conditions at their departure airport; however, we will make every effort possible

United Airlines Same-day Flight Change Rules

When it comes to same-day changes, United’s policy is especially stingy by airfare-rule standards. Here are the key points to keep in mind:

  • You and everyone on your reservation must travel on a United domestic or international ticket (with a number starting “016”) on a United or United Express aircraft (even though United’s app offered alternate UA-metal flights on my last international flight to make me reach my connection to a Brussels Airlines flight).).
  • The United Airlines Same-day Flight Change Policy applies to award tickets, but not to basic economy fares, bulk, group, or consolidator fares.
  • A same-day change can be requested 24 hours before departure. It is possible to change to a flight departing the day before or day after your original flight, as long as it departs within 24 hours of your request.
  • The origin and destination airports must remain the same, but a connection can be added or removed. It is not allowed to switch between flights departing from Newark and LaGuardia like Delta does.
  • The same-day change is possible if you checked bags as long as it is made at least 60 minutes prior to the departure of your new flight.

There are already more choices than American (which ties you to your original route) and Delta (which doesn’t let you drop a connection and limits same-day changes to flights within the U.S., Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Canada).

United Same-Day Flight Change Rules for Premier Members

Those who are United Premier members have extra flexibility when it comes to flight changes made within 24 hours of departure. If you want to change flights within 24 hours of the original departure time, you may be able to confirm a seat on another flight at no extra charge (i.e. no change fee).

There may be a fare difference if your original ticketed fare class isn’t available on the new flight. If not, you can always choose to stand by for free.

What If I Have a United Airlines Basic Economy Ticket?

Even if you have elite status, Basic Economy tickets are not eligible for same-day changes or same-day confirmed flights. As an alternative, you can fly on standby for other flights within 24 hours of your original departure time, but you will be at the bottom of the list.

United Airlines Same-day Flight Change Fees

Currently, travelers who are not elite must pay $75 for confirmed same-day flight changes, but beginning Jan. 1, 2021, elites will be able to make changes for free. This is a substantial advantage that even lower-tier United members will enjoy.

In the event that your original fare class isn’t available, you must also pay the fare difference. A FlyerTalk wiki explains, however, that you can normally avoid this, despite what United’s site doesn’t mention. United Airlines opens up many previously-closed fare classes by the time the same-day change countdown starts, and even the cheapest buckets often reappear if you wait until a few hours before departure.

Can I Change a United Flight on The Same Day as Travel

You can change a United flight on the same day of travel without being charged a fee. It’s called same-day confirmed travel and it is available to anyone with a confirmed reservation.

There are some restrictions, however:

  • You must be traveling within the U.S., to/from Canada or between U.S./Canada and Mexico.
  • You must be willing to pay any fare difference between the original flight and the new flight.
  • You cannot change your flights to a partner airline (like ANA).
  • The flight you want to switch to must have the same class of service as your original flight (so if you booked basic economy, you’ll need to switch to another basic economy flight).
  • If you’re on an award ticket, you’ll have to pay a $75 fee in addition to any difference in miles between the two award seats (though this fee is waived for United MileagePlus Premier members).

Changing United Airlines tickets booked with miles

Call United and ask them to change your award. You will be charged the difference in miles.

There are no fees for changing your award ticket, but if you change the dates of travel, the number of miles required for your new trip may be higher than the original trip. In this situation, you will be charged the difference in miles plus a $75 ticketing service charge per ticket.

  5. Fees and Fare Differences: If you miss your flight due to reasons within your control, such as arriving late at the airport, you may be responsible for any applicable fees and fare differences when rebooking.
  6. Consider Travel Insurance: If you have travel insurance, check your policy to see if it covers missed flights due to specific reasons like traffic accidents or medical emergencies. Depending on your coverage, you may be eligible for reimbursement.

United Airlines Missed Flight Policy

United Airlines Missed Flight Policy is designed to help you, the customer, and we’re happy to help you get home.

If you miss your flight due to a delay or cancellation, or if you arrive at the airport too late to make your flight, United will rebook you on the next available flight. This may mean that you’ll have to wait for a later flight out of another city (if it’s not possible for us to book a direct replacement). If this happens, we’ll give you meal vouchers and hotel accommodations for up to 12 hours (if needed). We’ll even pay for transportation between the airport and the hotel.

In addition, if you’re flying internationally and miss your flight because of our error or delay (meaning the problem occurred before you purchased your ticket), we’ll provide meals, hotels, and transportation while we work with government officials to get a new ticket issued as quickly as possible.

While these policies don’t cover every situation or scenario (for example, if there’s an act of nature like an earthquake or flood), they do provide reassurance that if something goes wrong with your plans due to circumstances beyond your control—whether it’s weather conditions or overbooking—United Airlines will make sure that you’re covered by providing a replacement fare

What happens if you are running late for your United flight?

Suppose you discover that you will run late to the airport because of traffic or inclement weather. In that case, United Airlines may classify you as a no-show and cancel your ticket itinerary. This will occur if bad weather or traffic delays cause you to arrive at the airport late. Therefore, you should phone United Airlines’ customer care number if you ever find yourself in a scenario like this.

Due to their capacity to rebook you on another flight so you can still fly, a representative from their department can help you with United Airlines Missed Flight. You might be charged rebooking fees to purchase a new ticket.

On the other hand, suppose a representative is unavailable when you call. If this is the case, you can reschedule the ticket by first accessing the official United Airlines website on your device using the web browser you use most frequently. To do this, follow the steps listed below.

  • Before using the search button, you must first enter the PNR number from your previous ticket and the passenger’s last name.
  • Following that, you will pick the currently active reservation and click the “reschedule” button on the screen.
  • After properly entering the new date, time, and previous destination name, you must click on the search tab.
  • You will then be shown a list of available tickets; select one, and then move on to the next step, selecting the payment method to pay the associated fees if one is offered.
  • After that, once everything has been completed, you will receive an email confirming the flight’s rescheduling.
  • You won’t be able to alter the departure time of your flight via a kiosk, an app, or the airline’s website, but you can do it by showing up at the gate an hour before takeoff.

In the event that you are unable to make your scheduled departure, what would United Airlines do?

A passenger who fails to check in for a United aircraft within the allotted time is referred to as a “no show” in the aviation industry. The consequences of missing a flight on United Airlines depend on the circumstance that led to your absence, and they might range from mild to severe, depending on how serious the issue was. In the event of a medical emergency or any other circumstance that carries great weight, one may hope that airlines will take a positive approach. Another option is to request a reimbursement for the missing flight.

The United staff may be of service to travelers who arrived at the airport on time but were unable to check in or board their aircraft because there was very little window of opportunity. If you need to leave right away, they can find another flight that works for you. You will typically face significant charges and shouldn’t anticipate a refund if you fail to show up for an event without a good reason.

If you miss your flight, learn all there is to know about United Airlines here:

With the knowledge provided above, you won’t have to worry about missing your United Airlines trip. If you have any questions about the United Airlines policy on missed flights or run into any problems while booking your trip, you can contact the support staff at any time.

Every day of the week, the customer service department is open nonstop, 24 hours a day. Therefore, rather than wasting time fretting over the flight you missed, call the number to request immediate assistance.

The following facts must be understood if you end up missing your flight:

You may reschedule yourself on the earliest United flight with wheelchair-accessible seating. When chatting with an agent, you will be given alternatives similar to these; therefore, you should avoid the line and reserve another trip so that you do not have to wait.

Join the list of emergency contacts. If there are earlier flights that depart without any seats available to you, try adding your name to the backup list. You can also keep reading to learn more about what will happen if you miss your flight with United Airlines.

If you were late getting there, you missed your flight! What will happen after that?

What if you miss your United Airlines flight when you are in haste to get to the airport but, for whatever reason, you are running behind schedule?

If the former is true and boarding has ended while you are still outside, you should wave to a staff member and apologize for your mistake. Your airline will be aware of the confusion that occurred during this process, known as decontrolling, even though they won’t be able to bring the plane to a stop. You will be retrieved once it is finished and escorted through security to have your visa examined.

Can I board a different plane operated by the same airline if I miss my flight?

If you miss your flight with United Airlines, there is no assurance that you will be offered a seat on the flight that departs after it or one that departs later in the day with the airline you were flying with.

Your name might be included in a save or backup list if specific conditions are met. As a result, you will be ready to replace the subsequent unfortunate traveler who misses their flight. On the other hand, if you are on a popular route, like London to Rome, it can be easier to rebook on a later flight to get a confirmed ticket.

Do I have to pay the full cost of the ticket if I miss my flight?

The cost of tickets at late hours can be high, and different airlines have varying policies about how much you must pay for a missed United Airlines flight. Some low-cost transporters, for instance, may charge a “missed flight” or “rescue price” for their services.

Can you get your money back from United Airlines if you miss your flight?

There’s something that a lot of people talk about using the term ‘punctured tire rule’ for,” noting that not all airlines provide this service.

In essence, if the traveler states that they were late because of a flat tire, accident, or something similar, the standard can be used to charge the passenger simply that very day Confirmed [or] backup fee, as opposed to a change charge and change of entrance expenditure.

Explorers have a backup plan in place when they are running late due to events beyond their control, just as United Airlines strives to avoid having to reimburse customers for scratch-offs related to the weather.

Most domestic carriers, including United Airlines, are willing to accommodate passengers who arrive at the airport within two hours of their scheduled flight time, and they do so without charging extra fees or additional toll increments, even though this policy is not widely advertised on airline websites.

If you miss a flight on United Airlines, you can rebook at no additional cost.

You can also cancel your reservation and get a refund of the ticket price (less any non-refundable charges), if you cancel at least 24 hours before your scheduled departure. If you cancel within 24 hours of departure, there are no refunds available.

If your flight is delayed or canceled and you don’t have another way to get to your final destination, United will give you a hotel voucher for one night’s stay, up to $200 in meal vouchers, and access to its frequent flyer program for future travel on United Airlines or other airlines.

United Airlines has a policy that allows passengers to change their flights without penalty if they miss their original flight due to circumstances outside of their control. The policy is applicable to customers who have purchased their tickets directly from United, but it does not apply to passengers who booked through third-party agencies. Passengers are eligible for a one-time change in flight or cancellation fee waiver if they miss a flight due to circumstances like:

  • A medical emergency requiring hospitalization (including childbirth)
  • Death or serious illness in the immediate family
  • Natural disasters or political upheaval that prevent travel
  • Severe weather conditions that cause delays or cancellations at origin or destination airports

Things to Know When You Miss a Flight on United Airlines:

  • Check for a New Flight – You should immediately look for another flight available to your destination. The airline provides constant efforts to provide you with alternatives for your destination. So, it might possible that you may get another new flight for your destination. By contacting the support team or visiting the website, you can get the boarding pass.
  • Rebook a Flight – Also, as per the United Airlines missed flight policy, you have an option to rebook a flight. On the earliest accessible flight to your destination, you can rebook a seat. To do so, you don’t have to stand in a long queue as the job can be done on a single phone call.
  • Join the Standby List – There are flights with no seat availability, in that case, you can request to join the standby list. As soon as the seats are available for you, you get notified by the airline. Also, there is no security that you get a seat on a United Airlines flight when you join the standby list but you’re on the priority.
  • According to United Airlines’ missed flight policy, the airline may waive the standby fee for you and it will be free for you. In addition to this, when you don’t find an earlier flight listed on the airport kiosk or app, you can wait at the gate of the flight for about 60 minutes before the departure, the gate agent might help you to add you on the standby list.
  • Look for Alternate Airport – You can switch to a nearby airport to your destination by going to the website or contacting the reservation support team. For example, you missed your flight to New York/Newark; you can opt for New York LaGuardia if it goes with your travel plan.

United Airlines is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. If you have a question about your flight or want to change it, this is the best way to get in touch with them. The phone agents are happy to help you, and they’ll do everything they can to give you what you want.

They also offer live chat if you prefer not to use the phone, or if there’s something that only needs a quick response, like checking in for your flight or adding an extra bag onto your ticket.

If you use Twitter often and want instant responses from companies like United Airlines, then following them on Twitter is definitely recommended! You’ll be able to get updates from them on new routes, special deals and more! Just follow their Twitter page here: https://twitter.com/united

United no-show policy

  • When a passenger fails to arrive at the airport for his/her flight without informing the airlines, it is called No Show. In some cases, United may cancel all your subsequent flights if you fall under No Show category. There are certain terms and conditions attached to it.
  • For instance, if you purchased a fully refundable ticket but did not show up for your flight, you can ask for refund from the airlines. Make sure your consideration is valid and does not go beyond the expiration date.
    • If the passenger has other legs on the same ticket, those are canceled as well.
    • The entire ticket becomes invalid
    • The airline issues no refund or credit to the passenger
  • Please visit the website, www.united.com to learn more about No Show Policy of United Airlines. If you still find that you are confused, feel free to get in touch with the airlines by calling on the registered customer service number.
  • The agent on the other end will help you with all your queries about the policy. He/she will assist you and will also give all your options.

United No Show Fee Charge?

So a change or cancellation fee for a United flight is 200 dollars. I have an interview and it got moved and there is a chance I may miss my flight back home. I can book a one-way flight for much cheaper (50 dollars), can I just no-show for my original flight or will I suffer a huge fine for missing a flight?

Join the United Airlines Standby List:

If there are no free tickets on the flight you want, you can ask the airline to add your name to a waiting list in case a seat opens up on another. If you do this, the airline will contact you as soon as a suitable seat becomes available. Even though there is no assurance that you will be able to get a seat on the aircraft, you will be given priority on the United Airlines flight.

In addition, if a seat becomes available, the airline may forgo charging you for it by waiving the standby fee. In addition, if you cannot book an earlier flight using the airport self-service kiosk or smartphone, you have the choice of waiting at the gate before the flight’s takeoff. The United Airlines representative can help you put your name on the standby list while you are still at the gate.

What is a United Standby list and how can it help you?

  • One more feasible option United offers is getting on the Standby list. This is a great option in cases when flights leave early and therefore have no availability for seats. You can ask the concerned agencies to get you on the Standby list
  • This way when a seat becomes available, you might be able to get on that flight.
  • As per United Airlines Missed Flight Policy, the airlines will not go off your booked seats on your rebooked flight. There is no fee for getting on the Standby list.
  • After waiting for a while, if you still do not see any flight listed, ask the agent for help or wait at the gate of that particular flight at least an hour before it departs.
  • The agent will add your name to the Standby list so in case any change happens, you will be the first one informed.
  • United’s flat tire rule will be put into effect after the passenger arrives at the airport within two hours of scheduled departure.
  • The most important thing to remember is you need the help of the airport agents. Make them want to help you by pleading your case calmly and honestly. If they believe you did everything you could to get there on time, all should work out to get you on your way.
  • Next time you’re running far too late for a flight, the flat tire rule could save you next time. This gives check-in agents the flexibility to help passengers who have missed a flight – and while this is supposed to be due to traffic or road issues passengers may encounter, it’s not limited to flat tire-related incidents only!

Unlike United Airlines, does not have a set flat-tire policy in place, which makes requesting a flexible accommodation a little tougher for passengers. If a passenger misses their flight and contacts United Airlines Reservations Number or arrives at a United Airlines ticketing counter within 30 minutes of the posted departure time, United will “generally speaking” book that passenger on the next available United or United Express flight. So, while not guaranteed, it’s worth a shot if you miss your flight and are within the 30-minute window.

So, if you’re late for a flight due to unforeseen circumstances next time, remembering this rule could help you get a new flight!

Can I get charged for missing a flight?

Most airlines only charge a fee for missing a flight if the passenger seems to have a habit of doing it purposely, commonly known as skiplagging, in which a passenger books a ticket with no intention of taking the secondary legs of a trip in order to secure a cheaper fare

How late can I change my United flight?

within 24 hours: Change your travel plans within 24 hours of booking

Airlines know that plans can change, so our 24-hour flexible booking policy lets you change your reservation or cancel it and get your money back within 24 hours of booking your trip, as long as you purchased your ticket one week or more before your flight.

What happens if you cancel a non-refundable flight?

To cancel a non-refundable ticket, you will be required to pay between $200-$400 depending on the length of the flight, location, and type of fare. The remaining fare will be given to you as an eCredit for future use on a United flight.

Does United Airlines have a no-show fee?

If you no-show for your flight you will need to pay $125 to have your miles redeposited, regardless of your status level. For same-day changes on award tickets, United charges $75 for Silver and general members. Elite members at the gold level or above will have the fee waived

Check if you already have a new flight.

We’re always looking for the best alternatives to get you where you need to go, so it’s possible we’ve already found you a new flight. Use the tools above to check, and if so, you can get your boarding pass right then and there.

Rebook your flight.

You can rebook yourself on the earliest flight with available seats. These are the same options you’ll get when speaking with an agent, so skip the line and get a new flight without the wait.

Join the standby list.

If there are flights that leave earlier with no available seats, try joining the standby list. We might be able to get you on those flights if seats become available. If you join the standby list, we won’t give up your confirmed seat on your rebooked flight. We’ll also waive our normal standby fees so it’ll be completely free. If you don’t see the earlier flight listed on the kiosk or app, stop by the gate of that flight about 60 minutes before it’s scheduled to depart. The gate agent will be able to add you to the standby list.

Find alternate airports.

You can switch to a nearby airport using any of the tools above. Was your flight to New York/Newark canceled? Try flying into New York LaGuardia if it works with your travel plans.

Can I get a refund for a missed flight?

Unfortunately, if you’ve missed your flight due to a fault of your own, you will not receive a refund from your airline. Generally, the only time you will get your money back is if the airline cancels your flight.

Missed connecting flight due to a delay: Connecting flights are the vast majority of the flights that passengers miss. If your initial flight is delayed or canceled, this may cause you to miss a connecting flight later on. If you have checked in for your first flight on time and a delay or cancellation has made you miss a connecting flight, you may very well be entitled to receive compensation.

First of all, if you’ve missed a flight through no fault of your own, the company must provide you with a replacement flight to your final destination or fly you back to where you came from. This includes if your flight has been delayed due to bad weather conditions, political unrest or other extraordinary circumstances. So, if you’re waiting at the airport due to such an event, contact the airline staff at the counter and request an alternative flight immediately. Remember that the airline is responsible for your whole itinerary, from start to finish.

If United cancels a flight then United Airlines will try to re-book you on a different flight. If they cannot, or if the revised flight is not to your liking, then you can refuse.

What happens then is determined by how you booked your ticket – if you booked it directly with the airline (which is what most experienced travelers tend to do) then you would be entitled to a full refund of your money. Airlines are doing their best to try to slow this process down during the COVID-19 pandemic in an attempt to stop bleeding money, and are asking people to accept vouchers for future travel (sometimes at a markup). It is your right to refuse that, however, and insist on a full refund. It may take a long while, though, based on what I am hearing.

If you booked through an agent (either online (OTA) or brick-and-mortar) then you are subject to the terms and conditions of that agency that you agreed to when you booked the ticket. Some are saying that there are no refunds, others are giving you a refund minus their processing fee, which can sometimes be substantial, and still others are giving full refunds without any fees.

Why are United flights canceled?

The problems with flight delays and cancellations that have plagued US travelers this week are mostly over — except at struggling United Airlines.

The most common reason behind flight delays and cancellations include:

  • Air traffic control delays.
  • Bad weather.
  • Late arriving aircraft.
  • Mechanical delays.
  • Staffing issues.

What to do when United cancels your Domestic or international flight?

If United cancels your flight, you currently have two distinct options: You can either accept a rebooking from United. You can choose to have your money refunded.

They still have to get you to your destination.

They will put you on a different flight, typically operated by United (but depending on the situation they might ask another Star Alliance carrier to step in; within the US, they might also book you on another carrier, say Delta or American).

If this results in a bad delay, you can typically also look for alternative flights (in which case, definitely consider other Star Alliance carriers) and try to rebook yourself on one that works better.

If the cancellation is due to widespread delays (typically bad weather), it’s probably better to try and rebook it yourself through the app or on the website rather than calling.

Even if you do call, it’s always better to have some options prepared: look up what other flights are available with United or Star Alliance and take some time to research alternative airports.

If you are already at the airport and you have lounge access, it’s usually easier to get assistance at the lounge than at regular customer service desks.

You can file a United Airlines flight cancellation compensation claim if your flight is cancelled within 14 days of departure. Denied Boarding due to Overbooking – You may also obtain compensation if you are denied boarding the flight because of overbooking.

If you are involuntarily denied boarding, your flight is cancelled, or your flight is delayed by more than two (2) hours beyond its scheduled time of departure, United will offer you the following free of charge:

  • A) If the expected departure time of your new flight (if any) is the same day as the departure date of your originally ticketed flight, you are entitled to receive: Meals and beverages commensurate with the expected waiting time; and Two telephone calls and sending of a notice by fax or e-mail, at your election.
  • B) If a stay of one (1) or more nights becomes necessary or a stay additional to that intended by you becomes necessary:
  • Hotel accommodations; and Transport between the airport and the place of accommodation (hotel or other location if you have chosen to stay elsewhere at a reasonable distance from the airport) We may also limit or decline your right to care if the provision of care would itself cause further delay.

United Airlines Cancellation Policy

Here is what I found about United Airlines Cancellation Policy:

  • United Airlines allows passengers to cancel their flight within 24 hours of booking and receive a full refund with no fees
  • For non-refundable tickets, the cancellation fee varies depending on the length of the flight, location, and type of ticket. The fee can range from $200 to $400
  • Refundable tickets can be canceled for free
  • Passengers who miss their flight due to circumstances outside of their control can change their flight without penalty. However, this policy only applies to customers who have purchased their tickets directly from United, not third-party agencies
  • United Airlines charges a no-show fee of $200 for domestic flights and up to $400 for international flights

United Flight Refund Policy

  • Most fares are nonrefundable and not eligible for voluntary refunds
  • Refundable tickets can be canceled for free

  • If you miss your flight due to your own mistake, you may not be eligible for a refund

Note that policies may vary depending on the type of ticket purchased, so it’s best to check the terms and conditions of your specific ticket.

United Flight Cancellation: Passenger rights

In the event that your flight is cancelled, you are entitled to the benefits defined under subsections A, B, and C of the Description of Your Rights section of this Notice.

United is not obliged to pay you the flight compensation described in subsection A if:

  • 1) You are informed of the cancellation of your flight at least two (2) weeks before the scheduled time of departure; or
  • 2) You are informed of the cancellation between two (2) weeks and seven (7) days before the scheduled time of departure and you are offered re-routing, allowing you to depart no more than two (2) hours before the scheduled time of departure and to reach your final destination in less than four (4) hours after the scheduled time of arrival; or
  • 3) You are informed of the cancellation less than seven (7) days before the scheduled time of departure and you are offered re-routing, allowing you to depart no more than one (1) hour before the scheduled time of departure and to reach your final destination less than two (2) hours after the scheduled time of arrival.
  • In addition, you may not be entitled to compensation if your flight was cancelled because of special circumstances which were not under United control, and the cancellation could not have been prevented even if we would have taken all reasonable measures possible to avoid the delay or a labor strike.

How to rebook a canceled flight on United

If you booked with United and your travel plans have changed, you can rebook or cancel online. Should you want to call their customer service, do so when your travel is within 72 hours. If not, you can do it online or thru the app.

What do I do if I miss my next scheduled flight due to a delay in the previous flight?

I have been in this situation a few times, and have learned how to deal with it, and what works.

If you purchased a single ticket with connecting flights on it, regardless of whether the two flights are with the same or different airlines, you are in luck. The airline that operated the first flight that was delayed will be responsible for “re-accommodate” you. This could mean rebooking you on the next available flight to your destination on any airline available, or providing you with a hotel for the night and a confirmed flight the next day. Airlines don’t always offer this upfront, but it is good to know your rights, and you may have to ask.

How to manage same-day ticket changes & flying standby on United Airlines

United Same-day Flight Change Policy is unique among major U.S. legacy carriers, but learning them is worthwhile. United Airlines Elite Flyers don’t have to pay the fee, but there are many cases in which you should incur $75 and adjust your trip within 24 hours of departure. If you have flexibility in your travel plans, you can soon standby for an earlier flight free of charge.

United Standby List: How Does It Work?

As you wait on standby, you may notice that the list is constantly changing. Being on the standby list doesn’t guarantee you’ll be the first to be given a seat just because you asked.

On United Airlines’ waitlist, passengers are prioritized in the following order:

  • A traveler’s Premier status (The published Premier status with the highest priority is Premier 1K, followed by Premier Platinum, Premier Gold, Premier Silver, other MileagePlus members, and then all other customers.)
  • Fare class
  • Those who own a Chase United MileagePlus Club card or a Chase Presidential Plus card
  • Participants in United Corporate Preferred
  • Spending $25,000 or more on the United Chase Card each year
  • Date and time of the request

A Basic Economy ticket holder will be added to United Airlines’ standby list after all other ticketed customers. According to the above priority list, they will be prioritized in the same manner. Whether you have MileagePlus Premier status or not, this rule still applies.

United Change Flight Policy

United Change Flight same as United Cancellation Policy, customers can change their reservation up to 24 hours after the original booking without incurring a fee. A Basic Economy ticket does not qualify for this offer.

United Basic Economy Change

Even during the initial 24-hour window, United Airlines will not allow you to make changes to basic economy tickets. Your best option if you’re still within 24 hours is to cancel your ticket and book a new one.

United Non-Refundable Ticket Change

In the event of a flight change, United will not charge any fees; you will just be responsible for any difference in fare.

United charges $75 for same-day changes for Silver and general members. We will waive the fee for elite members at the Gold level or higher.

United Refundable Ticket Change

For flight changes, United does not charge a fee. You will need to pay the difference in price if you switch to a more expensive option. The difference in fare will be refunded to your original payment method if you change to a cheaper flight.

United Award Ticket Change

All change fees on award flights have been eliminated by United. Customers can now switch to any award flight without paying an additional fee.

United Airlines Same-day change vs. standby

Changing a flight last minute comes in two forms: same-day change and standby. One key difference between same-day changes and standbys is that same-day changes are confirmed changes, while standbys are not confirmed until just before departure. If a seat does not open up on your desired flight, you retain your original ticket.

From Jan. 1, 2021, all United customers will be eligible for free standby, eliminating the $75 fee currently required to confirm a standby seat. Using United’s app, website, or at the airport, passengers can add their names to the standby list up to 30 minutes before departure for domestic flights and one hour for international flights.

Who Is Usually on the Standby List?

The following types of passengers are commonly on United Airlines’ standby list:

Customers who are on standby involuntarily. United Airlines changed their itinerary or canceled their original flight, resulting in these customers not traveling on their original flight.

Standby customers voluntarily. On eligible fares, these are customers who have chosen to standby for a different flight.

Pass riders. Employees of United Airlines or their eligible dependents are standing by if there is space available. Priority is given to standby passengers last, and their seats are assigned only after all others have been accommodated.

How to Join United Airlines’ Standby List

You can add yourself to the standby list by going to united.com or downloading the United App. The process can also be completed at an airport kiosk or by speaking with a United representative at the airport. You can view flight options by selecting “View Flight Options” when reviewing your itinerary at the airport kiosk.

United will display your last name and first initial on screens near the gate once you are added to the waitlist. Alternatively, you can check the real-time standby status on the United app or at united.com/flightstatus.

United Airlines will automatically assign you a seat if one is available 30 minutes before departure for domestic flights and 60 minutes for international flights. United Airlines will notify you by text or email if you signed up for day-of-travel notifications that your seat has already been assigned. The United app can also be used to refresh your boarding pass, or you can check the screens near the boarding gate for your seat and status.

You may need to contact United Airport if your name doesn’t appear on the standby list despite your request to be added. Issues such as these can only be resolved at the airport by United.

Standby Rules for United Missed Flights

When flights are delayed longer than an hour or canceled, or if passengers miss connections, United Airlines strives to assist their passengers in any way that they can. Find an alternative flight that works for you through the United App, the United website (united.com/check-in), and the United kiosks in airport check-in areas.

You can do the following when you log on to any of them:

  • Check if you already have a new flight booked. United Airlines will continue to search for the best alternatives to get you where you need to be. It is possible that they have already found you a new flight. Then you can get your boarding pass right away.
  • Flights can be rebooked. You can also rebook yourself on the earliest flight with available seats. As an agent will also give you this option, you might want to skip the line without waiting.
  • You can join the standby list. You can try joining the standby list if there are flights departing earlier without seats available. If a space becomes available, United Airlines may be able to get you on those flights. When you join the standby list, United won’t give up your confirmed seat on your rebooked flight. The standby fees will also be waived, so it will be completely free. About 60 minutes before departure, stop by the gate of the earlier flight if it isn’t listed on the kiosk or app. You can be added to the standby list by the gate agent.
  • Search for alternate airports. It is possible for a flight to a certain airport to be canceled. In case your travel plans allow, you can switch to a nearby airport.

You may cancel your trip instead by contacting an airport agent or United Airlines’ customer service department. There may be a possibility of a refund.

Standby Rules for Upgrades

You may be eligible for an upgrade right away when you book a ticket for a flight or you can apply for an upgrade.

Instant Upgrades on United Airlines

The United Airlines elite program offers instant upgrades to the highest-priced economy-fare classes (Y and B). In other words, once you choose and purchase your flights, you can check to see if upgrades are available. Additionally, this instant upgrade is available to Premier 1K members and customers applying for miles or a certificate to move up to the next cabin (subject to terms and conditions).

Waitlist for Upgrades on United Airlines

It is common, however, for your upgrade not to clear during the time you are booking your flight. Your name will be added to the waitlist for an upgrade. Some upgrades are confirmed a few days before your flight, while others are only discovered at the gate just before you depart.

United Airlines clears upgrades on the upgrade waitlist in the following order of priority:

  • Passengers with Premium Plus status. Upgrades are given to passengers booked in the O, A, and R fare classes. United Global Services members with full-fare Y tickets have a higher priority than United Premium Plus members.
  • Type of upgrade. The priority is given to passengers who redeem PlusPoints or miles for upgrades over elites who rely on complimentary upgrades.
  • Traveler with premier elite status. First priority is given to members of United Global Services, followed by Premier 1K members, Premier Platinum members, Premier Gold members, and Premier Silver members.
  • The fare class. Regular economy tickets are prioritized in the following order: Y, B, M, E, U, H, Q, V, W, S, T, L, K, G. If you apply for Complimentary Premier Upgrades on award tickets, you will be prioritized after the lowest paid fare class.
  • Those who hold United Credit Cards. Members of the Chase United MileagePlus Club and the Chase Presidential Plus card.
  • Participants in United Corporate Preferred.
  • With an annual spending of $25,000, Chase United MileagePlus cardholders qualify.

Obviously, these factors don’t apply to every flight. In the event that more than one passenger with the same elite status tier requests an upgrade, United Airlines will use fare class as a tiebreaker. When that isn’t enough to determine who gets an upgrade first, the system will look at the credit card type the passenger holds (if any) and their spending thresholds.

United flight change policy

United Change Flight Policy is simple: You can make changes to your ticketed flight anytime before the flight’s scheduled departure.

You don’t incur the fee if you change your flight within 24 hours of booking, or if you book your ticket at least 7 days in advance and you’re flying domestically.

But if you don’t meet those requirements, United will charge you a change fee, which is $200 for domestic flights.

The fee is higher for international travel, so check the United website for more details on that. So as long as you follow those rules, you shouldn’t have to pay an arm and a leg to reschedule your flight.

Change to a different flight on the same day

Premier members

If you’re a Premier member, you can make changes to your flight reservation within 24 hours of departure and have the same flexibility as a First Class passenger.

You may be able to confirm a seat on another flight for no cost at all.* If your original ticketed fare class isn’t available on the new flight, you can always stand by for free.

If you have questions about this benefit or wish to make changes, please call united or visit their official website..

All other travelers

If you’re a customer or MileagePlus member without Premier status and your flight is cancelled, you may be able to confirm a seat on another flight within 24 hours of your originally scheduled departure time. A fare difference may apply even if the same original fare class is available. And don’t forget — you can always stand by for free!

Basic Economy Tickets

If you’re traveling on a Basic Economy ticket, you may only confirm changes to your flight within 24 hours of your original departure time. Once the 24 hour window has passed, you will not be able to change your flight.

Once your new flight has been booked, it’s always a good idea to check in online and print out your boarding pass before going to the airport. If you arrive at the airport with an electronic boarding pass and printed confirmation email, you can skip the check-in line and head straight to security!

How to Cancel or Change United Airlines flight

Canceling or changing a flight with United Airlines can be relatively easy, though the details depend on whether you booked directly through the airline or through a third party, like a travel agent.

If you booked directly with United Airlines, the first step is to determine if your ticket is refundable. If it is, you can cancel it and receive a refund by calling 1-800-UNITED-1 (1-800-864-8331). Be sure to have your confirmation number handy when you call.

If your ticket is not refundable, you may still be able to make changes for a fee. To do so, call United Customer Service and request any of the following:

  • Change in date
  • Change in time
  • Change in destination
  • Change in origin

Different Ways To Connect With The Live United Airlines Live Person

Connecting with a live United Airlines live person is easy. There are several ways you can get in touch with them and get your questions answered, including:

- Chat: Chat live with a representative 24/7 through our website or mobile app. You can also use chat to check on your flight status or make changes to your reservation.

- Email: Email us at [email address]. Please include your name, flight number, and date of travel in the subject line so we can answer your question as quickly as possible.

- Phone: Call United Ticket Agent at 1-800-UNITED-1 (1-800-864-8331) or at 1-833-UNITED-1 (833) 844-1239). Agents are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to help you with any booking issues, Cancellations, or changes to your itinerary.

United Cancellation Policy

We understand that circumstances may arise that result in you needing to change your travel plans, and we’re here to help!

As per United Cancellation Policy, you can cancel your flight within 24-hours of booking your ticket. Just call us at 1-800-UNITED-1 and we’ll refund the full value of your ticket.

If you cancel your flight less than 24-hours after you’ve booked it and more than seven days before the day of the flight, we’ll refund the cost of your ticket minus a $200 cancellation fee.

If you cancel seven days or less before your trip and at least one hour before the scheduled departure time, we’ll refund the cost of your ticket minus a $400 cancellation fee.

Unfortunately, if you cancel within one hour of the scheduled departure time or miss your flight for any reason, we cannot provide a refund. If you need to change your trip, please call the United Customer Service as soon as possible to avoid any schedule changes resulting in additional fees.

Canceling or changing United tickets during a travel waiver

If you booked a flight on United Airlines and need to change or cancel it due to weather-related travel disruptions, there are no fees for doing so.

  1. For flights canceled or changed by United, customers can rebook in the original class of service or travel on standby within 14 days of their original date of travel between the original city pair, subject to seat availability. Customers can also choose to apply the value of the ticket toward future travel, which must be completed within one year from the date when the ticket was issued.
  2. If you purchased a refundable fare, you can request a full refund without penalty. If you purchased a nonrefundable fare, any applicable difference in fare will apply.
  3. To change or cancel your reservation online, visit United Airlines Official Website. For all other tickets that were not booked directly with United (including those booked through an online travel agency), please contact your original point of sale for assistance with your reservations.

If you’re a United Airlines frequent flyer, you may have noticed a travel waiver for weather or other events that sometimes ends up causing flight changes, cancellations, and delays. These waivers can make it difficult to reschedule your flights as normal, but we’ve got the tips you need to get your itinerary back on track.

When an airline issues a waiver, they’re letting passengers know that they will not be charged a fee to change their flights because of the conditions outlined in the waiver. These are usually issued in weather-related cases when it’s possible that airports will shut down or flights will be delayed or canceled. Waivers impact both award tickets and revenue tickets.

It’s important to remember that while you aren’t being charged the standard change fee to alter your flight plans, airline employees are still working under heavy constraints and uncertain schedules. They may not be able to rebook you on another flight immediately even if it seems like there should be seats available. If this happens, just wait until the next day—the system may be updated once more information is available about how flights are running now that it’s daylight and/or airports have reopened.

Sometimes travelers won’t be able to change their flights online at all during an airline waiver period, so try to connect with United Customer Service.

Changing or canceling paid United tickets

If you paid for your ticket but are not a MileagePlus Premier member, you may cancel or change your reservation within 24 hours after purchase. If it has been more than 24 hours since you purchased your ticket, you can still cancel your reservation, but the airline will either collect a cancellation fee or will issue you a credit toward a future United flight. This credit is valid for one year from the date of issue.

If you are a MileagePlus Premier member, you can still cancel or change your reservation within 24 hours after purchase with no penalty. If it has been more than 24 hours since you purchased your ticket, then instead of collecting a cancellation fee, United will issue a credit for the full amount of the original ticket purchase toward another United flight for use within one year from the date of issue.

For more information about how to make changes to your booking once it has been completed, please contact our United Customer Care Team.

If you need to change or cancel a United ticket, you can do so with no penalty. You can change or cancel your ticket within 24 hours of purchase for a refund for any reason, or within one hour of departure if you have a flexible ticket. If you need to make changes after that time, visit the Manage Reservations page on united.com and enter your information.

To cancel a ticket, select “Cancel” from the dropdown menu next to the flight number and date of travel. You will receive an email confirmation when your request is processed by our Customer Care team. If you’re eligible for a refund, it will be processed in 7-10 days.

Changing or canceling United award tickets

We understand that plans can change. We’ll be happy to assist you with changing or canceling your award ticket.

If you have a flexible award ticket, you can change or cancel your reservation online by going to Manage Trips at united.com. Sign in to your MileagePlus account and click on the Trip Details link for the trip you want to change or cancel. Then select Change/Cancel from the Actions drop-down list and follow the instructions. If you need further assistance, please contact the United Customer Contact Center. For details on fees, refer to our policy on changes and cancellations for award travel.

If your ticket is not refundable and does not allow changes, it may be eligible for reinstatement as a MileagePlus award or travel certificate, depending on how recently it was issued. To request reinstatement of an award ticket or travel certificate, please contact the United Customer Contact Center. Refer to our policy on reinstating unused tickets and travel certificates for more information on this process and any applicable fees.

Policies are subject to change.

Changes or cancellations can be made on United.com.

You’re responsible for any difference in fare, and you may have to pay a service charge.

If you’re not able to cancel your reservation online, contact the United Customer Contact Center.

Allow enough time before your flight if you need to make changes or cancellations.

You can change or cancel your ticket:

  1. Within 24 hours of making a reservation without paying a service charge if we received your request at least 7 days before departure, and the reservation was made at least one week prior to travel; or
  2. Anytime without paying a service charge if we received your request at least 1 hour before departure and the reservation was made at least 1 hour prior to travel; or
  3. By contacting the United Customer Contact Center up to 4 hours after making your reservation or during the 24 hours following the purchase of a nonrefundable ticket, provided that the ticket was purchased at least 7 days prior to departure, and the scheduled time of departure for your first flight is at least 7 days from when you contacted us.

Changing or canceling United tickets booked with credit card points

If you book United tickets with your credit card points, you may have to pay a fee if you need to change or cancel the reservation.

The charge for canceling your flight is $200, but if you used miles to pay for the flight, you can cancel it without paying the fee.

You can call United and ask an agent to refund the miles used for your ticket back to your account. You will also be able to make changes to your reservation or request a full refund this way.

However, you won’t be able to make any changes to the number of award miles redeemed for a ticket. Once redeemed, these miles are nonrefundable.

You can also cancel your reservation online by visiting united.com, logging in with your MileagePlus number and password, selecting My Trips from the drop-down menu in the upper right corner of the page, and following the prompts available on that page.

The amount of the fee depends on how much time is left before departure and how far in advance you made the reservation. The fee can be as low as $50 or as high as $300.

You can use your Chase Sapphire Reserve or Chase Sapphire Preferred cards to book flights on United — but there are some restrictions. You’ll be charged a $75 fee for booking an award ticket through the Chase travel portal, which is waived for status holders and those with other premium credit cards.

Changing or canceling United Airlines basic economy fares

You have the option to change or cancel your United Airlines basic economy ticket. If you choose to change your flight, you can do so for a $200 fee.

Alternatively, you can cancel and rebook your ticket at a later date for a $200 fee plus any price difference between the existing and new tickets.

If changing flights is not an option, you may also choose to cancel your basic economy ticket and book a new one at any time without incurring the $200 fee.

This option is only available for the original purchaser of the ticket, however, so transferrable tickets are excluded from this rule. Cancellations must be made within 24 hours of booking, but changes can be requested until 30 days before departure date.

United Airlines standby policy

United Airlines has a very strict standby policy. The airline will only allow you to check in as a standby passenger if there are available seats and your original flight is delayed.

The airline does not accept standby bookings for flights that have been cancelled or overbooked. If you try to check in as a standby passenger on an overbooked flight, you’ll be denied boarding and asked to rebook your trip on another flight.

United also won’t allow standby passengers to check in prior to their original departure time — even if they have an earlier connecting flight in their itinerary. In other words, if your original flight is delayed, it’s best to wait until your new departure time before trying to check in again.

How to get on the United Airlines standby list

In order to get on the standby list for a United Airlines flight, you must be a traveler who has not yet purchased a ticket. If you have already booked a flight, you will need to cancel it and wait 24 hours before placing yourself on the standby list.

I will show you how to get on the standby list for a United Airlines flight by following these steps:

  1. Call United or go to the United website and click “Contact Us” in the top right corner of the page. You can also visit your local airport’s ticket desk for help.
  2. Tell the representative that you would like to be placed on standby for an upcoming flight. They will ask about your travel plans, including where and when you want to fly as well as whether or not you have checked luggage or carry-on items with which they can assist during boarding time.
  3. The representative will let you know if there are seats available on another flight. If not, they may suggest other options such as taking an earlier departure date or switching airlines altogether (for example, American Airlines).

How do you change or cancel your United flight?

If you need to change or cancel your United flight, you can do so online, by phone or at the airport.

Before You Book Your Flight: If you have a nonrefundable ticket and wish to change or cancel your flight, you may be able to use that ticket on another flight. If not, there may be a fee for changing or canceling your ticket.

Online: Log in to your MileagePlus account and select Manage Reservations from the My Trip section. Select Edit Reservations and then make any necessary changes.
