How to Change a Flight with American Airlines

American Airlines Same day change -when the agent confirms your change onto another flight. In most cases, you no longer have a reservation for your original flight.
American Airlines Standby Policy – when there isn’t availability to confirm a change. Instead, your request is placed in a queue and may be processed if there are empty seats remaining on the flight. Your reservation for the original flight remains intact until this standby clears.

American Airlines charges a $75 fee for a same-day confirmed change or a standby request. The fee for a confirmed change is waived for Executive Platinum members only, but the fee for a standby request is waived for a much larger group of travelers that includes all elite members and customers with full fare tickets.

Who can get same-day flight change for free?

AA Confirmed, same-day flight change is free for passengers ticketed in first or business class and those booked in full-fare (Y fare) economy. Also, American Airlines Executive Platinum and Platinum Pro elites — plus one companion in the same reservation — also get the option to change for free. Also, American Airlines AirPass ticket holders are eligible for free same-day flight changes.

How the AA 24-hour change window works

Thankfully, the “same day” part of the SDFC program doesn’t mean that you have to wait until the calendar day of your departure to make changes. For example, when I wanted to SDFC a 6 a.m. flight from Jacksonville (JAX) to Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW), I didn’t have to stay up until midnight to change my flight. Instead, I was able to change it the day before departure.

How to change AA award tickets

All AAdvantage award tickets are eligible for complimentary, confirmed, same-day flight changes. That said, unlike on paid tickets, you aren’t looking for “E” fare availability. Instead, there has to be award availability on the new flight for you to get a confirmed flight change.

While the SDFC option will show up online and, in the app, generally you’re going to end up having to call AA to change your flight.

Same-day changes can only be made within 24 hours of the new departure time — not the original departure time. The new flight can be earlier or later than the original flight as long as it’s on the same calendar day.

Also, the routing of the new itinerary must be the same, including the origin and destination airports (no co-terminals allowed in the same city). There must be available in the “E” fare class, which is reserved for same-day changes — find this under “Awards & Upgrades” when using ExpertFlyer. Cross-reference this with availability in the “A” fare class if you’re trying to improve your chances at an upgrade.

AA Only flights AA1094 and AA1402 have an upgrade available, but they are not available for a confirmed change. I’d probably pick AA1489 or AA388.

There is a $75 charge for standby requests that must be paid in advance, but the fee is refunded if the standby doesn’t clear. Unlike the same-day change, however, my interpretation of the rules is that customers with elite status may be re-routed to a different co-terminal in the same city.

American Airlines Same Day Flight Change rules

Let’s start with the basic rules of AA’s policy. True to the “same day” part of the name, your new flight(s) must depart the same calendar day as your original flight(s). For example, if you’ve booked the first flight Tuesday morning, you’re only going to be able to change to a later flight on Tuesday. You can’t fly out Monday night instead through a same-day flight change.

Also, the change must be made within 24 hours of the new flight. That means you won’t be able to change your flight until the day before or the day of. This can make it tough if you’re trying to make plans for your departure or arrival. Also, you can’t switch to any flight with an open seat. Instead, there needs to be specific availability on the new flight to make the change.

How to change or cancel your American Airlines flight

Changing and canceling your flight is so easy your grandmother can do it (but after reading this, you can be nice and offer to do it for her). Here are the step-by-step instructions.

Step 1: Head to the American Airlines website and log in or click the “Your trips/Check-in” tab at the top of the landing page. You don’t have to log into your account to see your upcoming flight — you just need your name and record locator. If you do log in, your upcoming travel will automatically appear under the “Your trips” tab.

Step 2: Simply click choose the trip from the list of upcoming flights and select “View/Change.” Then you’ll be given a rundown of your itinerary and other pertinent details, and you’ll see two links at the top of the page:

Step 3: Click the appropriate link and American Airlines will take you by the hand to help you change or cancel your flight. You’ll get an email outlining your changes.

American Airlines Upgrade Policy

Upgrades are always complimentary for Executive Platinum and Platinum Pro members. For Platinum and Gold members, upgrades on flights 500 miles or less are complimentary and flights greater than 500 miles require 500-mile upgrades. If possible, upgrades will be confirmed before departure based on elite status.

How do I use 500-mile upgrades?

American Airlines AAdvantage elite members can upgrade eligible purchased premium economy or main cabin tickets to the next service class (business or first class) on flights greater than 500 miles within North America (flights less than 500 miles receive complimentary upgrades). To request a 500-mile upgrade, log in to your AAdvantage account and find your trip to check if it is complimentary, auto-requested or if you need to manually request it. Each 500-mile upgrade is valid for a segment of your flight.

Can you use 500-mile upgrades without status?

No, only current American Airlines AAdvantage elite members can use 500-mile upgrades for flights. If you previously had status with American Airlines and have some remaining 500-mile upgrades in your account, you will need to regain elite status before you can use the upgrades. Those who do not have status with American Airlines can upgrade their flights only when they are traveling as companions of elite members.

Canceling an AA flight

American Airlines customers have 24 hours after purchasing their ticket to cancel it for a full refund, provided they booked the ticket at least two days before departure.
If the ticket was bought directly from American Airlines, request a refund online or contact American Airlines’ reservations desk, and the refund should be credited within a week. If it was purchased through a third party, customers have to call the third party to get refund details.
Flights booked through American Airlines’ reservations service are considered nonrefundable, so customers can get a full refund on these tickets only within 24 hours of purchase. Otherwise, the only situations that entitle a nonrefundable ticket purchaser to a refund are:
- A schedule change that results in a change of 61 minutes or more
- Death of a passenger or passenger’s traveling companion
- Military orders
However, non-refundable ticket values can be applied toward future flights as long as:
- The new trip begins within one year of the original ticket’s issue date
- The customer canceled the original ticket before the first flight departed

How do I rebook your American Airlines canceled Flight?

When you’re ready to rebook your trip, you’ll need either:

Your 6-character confirmation (also called a ‘Record Locator’)
Your ticket numbers

If you don’t know your Record Locator, you can find it in the confirmation email you received when you booked your trip.

American tickets have a 13-digit number that begins with ‘001’. Keep in mind there are separate ticket numbers for add-ons like seats, upgrades, and bags.

Login using your AA.com account credentials or locate the flight you wish to change by its record locator code. The record locator is six characters long and should appear on your itinerary confirmation paperwork.

Rules for American Airlines flight check-in

You can make American Airlines Check-in online or using the mobile app starting 24 hours before and up to 45 minutes before departure of the first flight in your itinerary. This applies even if you have a connecting flight that’s more than a day away. Note that online and app check-in closes an hour and a half before departure for international flights.

If you’re planning to check bags at the airport, you need to have the bags checked at least 45 minutes prior to domestic flights and 60 minutes prior to international flights. There are some airports with exceptions to this rule, which you can find on AA’s website.

If the first flight of your itinerary is operated by an American Airlines partner, you’re going to check in with that airline directly, and not on AA’s website.

American Airlines lets you check in through its mobile app or website which is www.aa.com.
If you check in online through the American Airlines official website app, then generate a digital boarding pass within your mobile wallet.
First step is to choose the online check-in option where you fill your name and your six-digit confirmation number.
Then by selecting ‘check-in’ on the left corner your check in process will start.
Then you agree to the materials policy and you can also purchase additional miles for your trip.
Then you can select or modify your seat on the plane.
When you are done selecting your seat, visit baggage check in section and pay baggage fees.
Then you have an option of printing your boarding pass, emailing it on your phone or you can also save a PDF of your boarding pass.

American Airlines (AA) mobile check-in?

You can check-in for your American Airlines (AA) flight with your mobile device starting 24 hours and ending 45 minutes before the scheduled departure time (depending on your departure city and destination) to receive a mobile boarding pass on your mobile device. You may use this option if:

you have an electronic ticket and the first flight is on American Airlines (AA)
you may access your reservation with your confirmation code, e-ticket number, or frequent flyer account
you are not a special needs passenger (for example, an unaccompanied minor)
you are not traveling on a military fare
you are departing from an airport which accepts mobile boarding passes (if not, then you may check-in and print a boarding pass at the self-service kiosk or ticket counter).
you are not traveling with an infant (a printed boarding pass is required)
the first flight of the itinerary is codeshare operated by British Airways, Iberia, or Japan Airlines

American Airlines Other Check-In Tips

You may not be able to check in online if your first flight is not on American or if you’re traveling on a military fare, with a pet, or with an oxygen container.
Once you’ve checked in, you can check your luggage at the airport at the curbside check-in or at the American Airlines checked-baggage counter (different from the check-in counter).
In selected airports, such as Fort Lauderdale (FLL); Las Vegas (LAS); Orlando (MCO); Seattle (SEA); Denver (DEN); Portland, Oregon (PDX); and Salt Lake City (SLC), baggage can only be accepted four hours or less before the departure time of the flight.
When you are arriving on an international flight, you will be required to retrieve your baggage at the first point within the United States and go through Customs. It’s important to leave enough time for this process when you book if you have a connecting flight.

- 2 hours for international flights to/from the US, and flights departing Hawaii and the U S Virgin Islands
- 2.5 hours for flights departing Honolulu
- 3 hours for flights departing Canada, the Caribbean islands, Central America, France, Ireland, Mexico, Nassau, South America, and Spain
- 3.5 hours for flights departing Bogota, Colombia
- 4 hours for flights departing Montevideo, Uruguay
Minimum required check-in time with carry-on baggage:
- 45 minutes before scheduled departure time for most US domestic flights
- 60 minutes before scheduled departure time for international flights to/from the US
The minimum time to check-in for an American Airlines (AA) flight is:
- 45 minutes before scheduled departure time for U S domestic flights
- 60 minutes before scheduled departure time for international flights to/from the US

If the AA website says check-in is open for your flight but you still can’t check in then it may be:

(a) It is an international flight and you have not entered your passport information.

(b) If you are flying to the USA and are not the US or Canadian citizen, then your visa info is not up to date. If you are relying on an ESTA, check it is valid on the CBP ESTA website.

(d) Your ticket has not been issued properly. Call AA immediately and get them to issue the ticket, or contact your travel agent to get the ticket issued.

(e) If it’s a codeshare flight, check-in with the operating carrier, not AA.

If your flight is operated by another airline (a so-called Code Share flight), then call AA and ask for the record locator of your reservation with the other airline. Most times you can then go to the website of the operating airline, check in online (at T-24 hours), or select/change your seats.
If it is an international flight, and you don’t have your current passport info in your profile or added this to your reservation well before check in, then you will have to check in at the airport every time during this trip. It happened to me last week, where I’d made the reservation and added my passport number before I got my new passport. My passport info got rejected at check-in via the app, and I had to check in at the airport both for the outbound trip as well as for the return.
If you need a visa for your destination country, you will often have to check in in-person. In order to be very sure that the country will admit you, AA’s process wants to have your visa information attached to your record before you are issued a boarding pass. This also can happen if you are a dual national of your departure and destination country. AA’s system allows you to list only 1 passport. If you enter your destination country using another passport, AA manually, at check-in, must check your eligibility to enter. (This used to happen to me all the time flying from the US to Brazil. AA has my US passport info on-file, but I’d use my European passport to enter because I didn’t need a visa that way. This is no longer needed now Brazil removed visa requirements for US passport holders for short visits.)
You may be on one of the watch lists. This doesn’t mean that you are a terrorist, but it simply means that there’s someone with a similar name who is of interest to the government. When you check in at the airport, you will see SSSS on your boarding pass. If this happens more than once without any reason, you can apply for a Redress Number that you can add to future reservations.
There are a few overseas airports that don’t allow electronic boarding passes. CCS may be one of them, and until recently BOG also required a printed boarding pass.
If none of the above is the case, then call AA and ask them why you cannot check in online.
Last, don’t stress out about this. Checking in via the kiosk at the airport is very quick and doesn’t add any time. And if you are in the upgrade list and the upgrade hasn’t cleared before T-24, check-in time won’t affect your position on the list for a “battlefield” (=gate) upgrade.

American Airlines AA Check-in Specific Details And Rules

American has specific details and rules on online check-in, but basically, you can check-in up to 24 hours in advance and until 45 minutes before departure (for U.S., Puerto Rico, or U.S. Virgin Islands airports) or 90 minutes for all other airports (international flights).

If you are checking in and checking bags at the airport, you must be there no less than 45 minutes before departure time for domestic flights and no less than an hour before departure time for international flights. Selected airports (such as Dublin, Buenos Aires, Caracas, Maracaibo, and St. Thomas) have different check-in times (typically 75 or 90 minutes before departure). If you are flying out of airports outside the United States, it is a good idea to double-check the time frame for online and airport check-in.

If you are flying on an American Airlines codeshare partner, it’s important to note that the check-in times for that partner are the ones that govern the situation.

What happens if you don’t check in before your flight?

Well, one of many things can happen. Here is a quick summary

You already have assigned seats as part of your AA reservations
1. You reach with enough time to spare (usually at least 1 hour before)- you go to the kiosk or check-In counter & grab a boarding pass. Bon voyage!
2. You reach a little late – your seat would be released to someone who was on time and did not have assigned seats. Goto Step 2.
You do not have assigned seats
1. You reach with enough time to spare (usually at least 2 hours before departure) – you check in at the gate or kiosk and they give you a boarding card with an assigned seat or an unassigned one. Mostly Bon Voyage!
2. You reach with enough time to board but not too far in advance – you check in at the gate or kiosk and they give you a boarding card with an unassigned Seat. You’ll Get an actual seat at the gate. Sometime you’ll Be unlucky and still may miss the flight if everyone else including overbookings show up.
3. you reach really late – it’s mostly please catch the next flight…

There is also a whole overbooking, bumping off and standby process I did not detail here along with airline frequent flier status which also accounts for deciding who gets unassigned seats first.

American Airlines Fare Classes

American Airlines offers eight fare classes with select amenities at a wide range of price points.

Economy Basic

American Airlines entry-level basic economy fare used to be just a seat and little personal item. However, they recently changed their baggage policy where you are allowed to bring 1 piece of standard carry-on luggage.

Lowest Fare

For all destinations that American offers, you will have the option to select the Lowest Fare. This will give you the standard prices for the economy (which they refer to as “Main Cabin”), premium economy, business, and first-class (if available on the flight).

Flexible Fare

American Airlines has revamped many of its change and cancellation fees, allowing customers more flexibility. For tickets issued on or after Aug. 31, 2020, American Airlines has permanently eliminated its change and cancellation fees for flights to/from the U.S., Canada, Caribbean, Central America, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

American has their revenue-based special ‘Concierge Key’ program but that doesn’t put a designated member above Executive Platinums in the upgrade queue the way United’s Global Services does.

American doesn’t privilege fare paid over status. This is especially important to me with all of my DC trips, where a Delta or United Silver member on a government YCA fare trumps a top-tier member flying on a mid-priced fare.

Delta’s top tier takes 125,000 miles and doesn’t even offer complimentary upgrades on New York – Los Angeles/San Francisco routes as a published benefit (it’s an unpublished day-of backpedal). American still offers complimentary upgrades on the ‘good’ domestic flights.

Best ways to earn American Airlines miles

The quickest way to earn American Airlines miles is by earning the bonus on one of the top American Airlines credit cards.

Thanks again to American Airlines’ broad regional definitions, you can visit any European country for only 30,000 American Airlines miles one-way in coach. This is the only award that has off-peak dates for partner airlines, which fall between:

Speaking of mixing carriers, you can fly to Tahiti on Air Tahiti Nui or Fiji with Fiji Airways, then onward to Australia or New Zealand on Qantas. Some members of the MMS team have flown from Los Angeles to Nadi, Fiji, then to New Zealand for an incredible trip. You can do it too, for 40,000 American Airlines miles one-way in coach, 65,000 miles in premium economy or 80,000 miles for business class.

8. Anywhere in Africa
Here’s the best example of American Airlines’ zone-based pricing — all of Africa is one region. If you haven’t noticed, Africa is big, so take advantage. American Airlines doesn’t fly to Africa, so you’ll have to find a partner award flight and pay:

Who should avoid American Airlines?

While American Airlines is a popular airline choice, it may not be the right airline for all travelers. Should you avoid it? While that largely depends on your travel preferences, some travelers may want to consider other available options before selecting American Airlines:

Travelers who don’t live in or near a hub: If you don’t live near one of American Airlines’ hubs, you may find limited flight availability and may have to deal with more layovers to get to your destination.

Travelers who don’t like bag fees: Depending on ticket type purchased, American Airlines may charge fees for checked bags and oversized bags. Choosing an airline that offers more baggage allowance may make sense for those who like to travel with more luggage.

Travelers who value reliability: American Airlines doesn’t offer the best reliability when it comes to on-time flights and baggage handling. If this is a crucial factor for you, you may want to think about flying with a different airline.

What American Airlines Owes You for Cancellations or Delays

Perhaps the most notable change is to American’s responsibilities when there’s a cancellation or delay of more than four hours. In these cases, American Airlines has generally rebooked travelers on later flights—including on partner airlines and sometimes even competitors.

However, going forward, American Airlines clarifies that it only owes travelers a refund of the unflown portion of their ticket:

If we or our airline partner fails to operate or delays your arrival more than 4 hours, our sole obligation is to refund the remaining ticket value and any optional fees according to our involuntary refunds policy.

This may seem reasonable, but it can be a huge pain in practice. This policy now allows American Airlines to legally strand you at a destination and/or force you to book last-minute flights to get where you need to go.

Say you book a $200 round-trip flight to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Your flights down are uneventful. However, when it’s time to return to the U.S., mechanical issues lead to the cancellation of your American Airlines flight home. In this case, American Airlines can simply refund you $100 and leave you stranded in Cabo. To get home, you’d be left needing to buy a one-way international ticket—which is likely to be a lot more than $100—or use points and miles to save the day.

Under rule 240, if the flight is delayed for reasons under their control, e.g., mechanical problems, they should provide you with a phone call if delayed > 2hrs. If more than 4 hrs. between 10 PM and 6 AM, a hotel room. You should get meal vouchers as well.
AA appears to have met its obligations under rule 240. They are supposed to try to get you out on their next non-sold-out flight to your destination (or available flight of another airline if this is not acceptable to you).
If you find these alternative arrangements objectionable, the airline may refund your money. However, you did not pay for your ticket – so no refund. Also, you should have brought any objections to the attention of the agent at the time it happened. You can write to AA but you probably won’t get anything.

If you’re massively delayed and the airline arranges alternate transportation with another carrier, they will cover all the expenses and extra fees the new airline might assess. What Do I Do If I Missed My Connecting Flight on American Airlines?

If the Airline is Responsible

You may be eligible for compensation if your flight with American Airlines is delayed or cancelled due to the airline. Reasons vary from technical issues with the plane to bad weather.

In order to compensate you for a delayed connecting flight, the airline should delay your original flight by 2 hours or more.

If American Airlines is the responsible party for your missed connection, they should book you on the next available flight to the same destination. If there are no available flights till the next day, they should cater for your accommodation and meals.

If the flight is cancelled because of poor weather, the airline will book you on the next available flight and let you know. The airline will not cover any accommodation or meal expenses incurred while waiting for another flight. That’s why travel insurance can be so helpful since it will cover expenses that the airline won’t.

If your flight is delayed or canceled, you can catch another connecting flight on American Airlines. If a family member had to be taken to the hospital, for instance, you might have missed your original flight. You should note that the airline will not offer to rebook for free and does not have any obligation to do so.

So you will have to pay the fee for hanging your flight, plus any difference in fare if there is any. It’s best to have both flights on American Airlines if possible because it will make rebooking a connecting flight easier.

Flight cancellation: If the airline cancels your flight altogether (or presents a change of flight as a schedule change), you have even more rights. First, you must be offered a choice between a refund for cancelled flight or an alternate flight.

American Airlines defines a schedule irregularity as:

A delay in the departure or arrival of an American Airlines flight that results in a misconnection, or
A flight cancellation or omission of a scheduled stop, or any other delay or interruption of an American Airlines flight, or
A substitution of equipment to a different class of service, or
A schedule change that requires you to be rerouted.

If your flight is delayed, cancelled or you miss a connecting American Airlines flight, due to a schedule irregularity

American Airlines must confirm you on their next flight (on which space is available) at no additional cost.
If there is an alternate American Airlines flight that will arrive at your destination earlier than the alternate you have been offered, you have the right to be confirmed on this American Airlines flight at no additional cost, even if first class space is all that is available.
If the alternate American Airlines flight is not acceptable to you, you have the right to be confirmed on the flight of a different airline at no additional cost.
If there is an alternate “different airline” flight that will arrive at your destination earlier than any alternate flight you have been offered, you have the right to be confirmed on this flight at no additional cost, even if first class space is all that is available.
If no alternate flight (on American Airlines or a “different airline”) is acceptable to you, American Airlines must refund your money – even if you have a non-refundable ticket.

With American’s new schedule change policy, you can only be refunded for a schedule change if you’re delayed by at least four hours, or if you go from a nonstop to a connecting itinerary.

With this new policy, American Airlines will only provide refunds to customers when schedule changes result in an overall delay of more than four hours, or when a customer goes from being booked on a nonstop, to being booked an itinerary with a connection.

In situations where the schedule change is four hours or less, and the customer wishes to rebook, they can do so without incurring any change fees. They can also cancel and rebook at a later date, and retain the full value of their ticket.

For irregular operations within 72 hours of departure, American Airlines will refund non-refundable tickets if a delay of 90 minutes or more occurs.

American Airlines Scheduled changes are allowed:

The ticket change and schedule time are only allowed in the following cases:

Changes in 90 minutes or less: The airline changes a flight with the same fare as your original ticket on the same day. They can change your connection point if you want to. This is a bit restrictive because if you bought a low fare and it is sold out that day, you will not have options.
Changes in 91 minutes or greater or a nonstop turned into a connecting flight: The airline will change the different flight even if the original fare class is not available, and will also change the partner flights.

Definitions of American Airlines Rule 240

Domestic tariff rules state the obligations of American Airlines customers when their flights are changed or canceled as a result of Schedule Changes or Irregularities.

American Airlines’ change or cancellation of a flight occurs prior to the day of departure but can occur up to more than 72 hours before the scheduled departure.
For Exp: Change of AA flight times, discontinuation of all service in a market, change of AA flight numbers, reduction of service.
You cannot use Re-accommodation or refund service when the schedule change only involves a change in the flight number.
Note: It is not necessary to reissue tickets immediately when a travel agent receives multiple schedule change notices. Passenger tickets should match current flight information prior to departure for check-in.

Procedure – Reissue for Schedule Change

American Airlines uses an automated schedule change process up to 72 hours prior to departure. Through this automated process, all schedule changes are sent to the booking source for notification.
It is the booking source’s responsibility to notify the customer, acknowledge the schedule change and reissue the ticket. If the Schedule Change for a delayed flight is within 30 minutes prior to or after the original departure, the Travel Agents may not re-accommodate to an alternate flight, unless the schedule change results in a “misconnect”.
Please note that a reissue is not required on tickets where the passenger has been affected by a flight number change and/or a time change with a departure of fewer than 15 mins earlier or less than 30 mins later.

31 minutes to 90 minutes – it is allowed to offer an alternate flight if available in their ticketed inventory only and as close to the original departure time as possible:
For the same travel dates, origination/destination, inventory, fare, and fare basis as originally ticketed.
May select an alternate flight wholly AA/AA* maintaining same inventory, origin/destination.
May have or add an alternate connecting point to the destination on the original ticket.

Change – AA Flights

Customer does not accept new itinerary as updated by AA schedule change and requests an alternate time of travel on the same day as ticketed:
Travel Agents may rebook new Itinerary for Customer
NOTE: If the AA flight delay is within 30 minutes prior to or after the original departure the Travel Agents may not re-accommodate to an alternate flight time or alternate date of travel unless the schedule change results in a “misconnect”.

Travel Agents can rebook new AA itinerary if:

Original inventory is not available and the flight change is 90 minutes or more or the flight changes from a non-stop to a
connecting flight may book an American Airlines next lowest available flight, inventory, same cabin, up to and including B inventory.
No AA flights are available and the flight change is 90 minutes or more or the flight changes from a non-stop to a connecting
flight may select an alternate flight on AA codeshare, maintaining the same inventory, origin/destination, fare, and fare basis as originally ticketed.
No AA flights are available and the flight change is 90 minutes or more or the flight changes from a non-stop to a connecting
flight may select an alternate flight on American Airlines* (restricted to codeshare partners), if original inventory is not available may book next lowest available inventory, same cabin, up to and including B inventory, excludes W inventory for premium economy on AA*.
You may have or add an alternate connecting point to the destination on the original ticket.
May change to a day prior/after the original ticketed travel date maintaining the same inventory, origination/destination, fare, and fare basis as originally ticketed.
May change their continuing or return travel dates on AA segments only maintaining the same inventory to maintain the original length of stay prior to the re-accommodation.

Steps to change the date on your American Airlines Flight

Visit American Airlines’ official reservation website.
Go to the “American Airlines Manage Booking” tab and log in with your credentials in the “My Trip” option.
Enter your ticket confirmation code and the first and last name of the passenger who has purchased the ticket.
You can now access your flight details.
Select the Change flight option and choose the new date for your flight
Pay the change fee (the change fee may or may not be different depending on your origin, destination, and route).
After the payment is cleared, American Airlines will send a confirmation message on the contact information you have given.
Though changing a flight date on American Airlines is quite a simple process, passengers still have to keep certain things in mind. So, before you change your flight, ensure you know and follow all these rules and guidelines.

American Airlines Flight Change Policy

In order to avoid any change fees, it is recommended that if your travel plan is uncertain, please try to change your booking within 24 hours after the initial booking.
Customers can cancel the ticket within 24 hours after purchasing the ticket and get a full refund.
Passengers must book tickets at least two days before departure.
The non-refundable ticket value can be applied to future flights as long as:
The new itinerary is no more than one year away from the original ticket booking.
The customer canceled the ticket before the scheduled departure of the flight.

Remember to enter only the correct details. If you are unsure of anything, you must contact American Airlines Customer Service and talk to their representative to clear up your doubts before proceeding.

Non-refundable tickets CAN become refundable

If a flight is severely delayed (generally over two hours) or canceled or if there’s a schedule change in advance or a route change (like a nonstop flight changing to a flight with connections), you can get a full refund on a non-refundable fare. Don’t let them push you around. When the airlines at fault, it owes you money.
