How to Change a Flight with American Airlines

American Airlines Same day change -when the agent confirms your change onto another flight. In most cases, you no longer have a reservation for your original flight.
American Airlines Standby Policy – when there isn’t availability to confirm a change. Instead, your request is placed in a queue and may be processed if there are empty seats remaining on the flight. Your reservation for the original flight remains intact until this standby clears.

American Airlines Change Flight at the airport (at the self-service kiosk or ticket counter) or call AA Reservations. If you still want to try for a different flight, same-day standby lets you standby for an earlier American or American Eagle flight (with the same routine on your day of departure).

  • You will not be charged any change fee for most domestic and short-haul international flights, and some long-haul international flights on certain fares.
  • American Airlines allows same-day flight change on domestic flights. For a $75 fee, you can get a confirmed seat on a different flight (known as a confirmed same-day flight change). If a seat is not available, you can opt for standby status instead (unconfirmed same-day flight change). If you are not allocated a seat on a standby flight, the $75 fee is refunded.
  • American charges a whopping $200 change or cancellation fee on most paid fares (excluding full-fare refundable tickets) for domestic flights. This climbs as high as $750 per passenger for international flights. Same-day charges start at $75 for domestic and short-haul international flights in economy class.
  • You can change your AA flight online and rebook later: including Basic Economy tickets purchased between March 1, 2020, and March 31, 2021.
  • You can’t change or cancel a ticket after April 1, 2021 if you bought it under the Basic Economy fare.
  • If you think about a same-day flight change, it can cost $75–150, except for Basic Economy.
  • If you buy a Basic Economy ticket, you can now purchase extras such as upgrades, priority boarding, seats, and same-day flight changes.
  • If you’re an AAdvantage® Elite member, you can now apply your travel benefits on fares that are considered “Basic Economy.”

You can request American Airlines standby or confirmed flight changes online, by phone, at an airport check-in kiosk, or at the ticket counter 24 hours prior to departure.

AA Same Day Flight Change Fee

  • The standard cost for an SDFC “on flights between the 50 United States, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI), Canada, and the Caribbean” is $75 per direction.
  • Long-haul international flights are generally not eligible for a same-day flight change, but there’s one exception. If you’re flying between New York-JFK and London-Heathrow (LHR) — including itineraries with connecting flights inside the U.S. — you can make a SDFC for $150 per direction.
  • American Airlines charges a $75 fee for a same-day confirmed change or a standby request. The fee for a confirmed change is waived for Executive Platinum members only, but the fee for a standby request is waived for a much larger group of travelers that includes all elite members and customers with full fare tickets.

Who can get same-day flight change for free?

AA Confirmed, same-day flight change is free for passengers ticketed in first or business class and those booked in full-fare (Y fare) economy. Also, American Airlines Executive Platinum and Platinum Pro elites — plus one companion in the same reservation — also get the option to change for free. Also, American Airlines AirPass ticket holders are eligible for free same-day flight changes.

How the AA 24-hour change window works

Thankfully, the “same day” part of the SDFC program doesn’t mean that you have to wait until the calendar day of your departure to make changes. For example, when I wanted to SDFC a 6 a.m. flight from Jacksonville (JAX) to Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW), I didn’t have to stay up until midnight to change my flight. Instead, I was able to change it the day before departure.

How to change AA award tickets

All AAdvantage award tickets are eligible for complimentary, confirmed, same-day flight changes. That said, unlike on paid tickets, you aren’t looking for “E” fare availability. Instead, there has to be award availability on the new flight for you to get a confirmed flight change.

While the SDFC option will show up online and, in the app, generally you’re going to end up having to call AA to change your flight.

Same-day changes can only be made within 24 hours of the new departure time — not the original departure time. The new flight can be earlier or later than the original flight as long as it’s on the same calendar day.

Also, the routing of the new itinerary must be the same, including the origin and destination airports (no co-terminals allowed in the same city). There must be available in the “E” fare class, which is reserved for same-day changes — find this under “Awards & Upgrades” when using ExpertFlyer. Cross-reference this with availability in the “A” fare class if you’re trying to improve your chances at an upgrade.

AA Only flights AA1094 and AA1402 have an upgrade available, but they are not available for a confirmed change. I’d probably pick AA1489 or AA388.

There is a $75 charge for standby requests that must be paid in advance, but the fee is refunded if the standby doesn’t clear. Unlike the same-day change, however, my interpretation of the rules is that customers with elite status may be re-routed to a different co-terminal in the same city.

American Airlines Change Flight Rules

Your new flight must:

  • Depart on the same day, from and to the same airports, as your original flight
  • Have the same number of stops, in the same airports, as your original flight
  • Be marketed and operated by American Airlines or American Eagle
  • Also, please keep in mind that:

Anyone can standby for an earlier flight, but only elite status members can standby for a later flight on the same day Same-day confirmed changes and standby are subject to availability on select flights

How to request an AA same-day change or standby

Beginning 24 hours before departure, go to your trips online or in the app, or stop by an airport kiosk or ticket counter to request a change and pay the fee, if applicable. *

After you check in, you’ll receive a new boarding pass and receipt.

*Customers traveling on a Basic Economy fare can’t make changes at a kiosk and should find their trip on the American app, aa.com, or visit a ticket counter to request a change.

American Airlines Same Day Flight Change rules

Let’s start with the basic rules of AA’s policy. True to the “same day” part of the name, your new flight(s) must depart the same calendar day as your original flight(s). For example, if you’ve booked the first flight Tuesday morning, you’re only going to be able to change to a later flight on Tuesday. You can’t fly out Monday night instead through a same-day flight change.

Also, the change must be made within 24 hours of the new flight. That means you won’t be able to change your flight until the day before or the day of. This can make it tough if you’re trying to make plans for your departure or arrival. Also, you can’t switch to any flight with an open seat. Instead, there needs to be specific availability on the new flight to make the change.

American Airlines $75 standby / confirmed same-day flight change fee is waived for the following passengers:

  • Customers who purchase unrestricted Economy Class fares (Y class of service)
  • Customers who purchase Business or First-Class tickets
  • Active U.S. Military personnel traveling on orders or personal travel
  • Active U.S. Military dependents traveling on orders
  • American Airlines AAdvantage Executive Platinum, AAdvantage Platinum, or AAdvantage Gold members
  • Oneworld® Alliance Emerald, Sapphire or Ruby members
  • Customers flying on the same reservation as an American Airlines AAdvantage Executive Platinum, AAdvantage Platinum or AAdvantage Gold member or Oneworld Alliance Emerald, Sapphire or Ruby member regardless of frequent-flier status or fare type
  • AAirpass members
  • First and Business Class MileSAAver Awards
  • First, Business and Economy Class Anytime Awards
  • Customers who purchase a Choice Plus fare

How to change or cancel your American Airlines flight

Changing and canceling your flight is so easy your grandmother can do it (but after reading this, you can be nice and offer to do it for her). Here are the step-by-step instructions.

Step 1: Head to the American Airlines website and log in or click the “Your trips/Check-in” tab at the top of the landing page. You don’t have to log into your account to see your upcoming flight — you just need your name and record locator. If you do log in, your upcoming travel will automatically appear under the “Your trips” tab.

Step 2: Simply click choose the trip from the list of upcoming flights and select “View/Change.” Then you’ll be given a rundown of your itinerary and other pertinent details, and you’ll see two links at the top of the page:

  • Change trip
  • Cancel trip

Step 3: Click the appropriate link and American Airlines will take you by the hand to help you change or cancel your flight. You’ll get an email outlining your changes.

You can also make a same-day change to your flight for $75 (waived for Executive Platinum and Platinum Pro status members). The same day you’re flying, you’ll find this other “same day” option when going into the View/Change tab. Same-day standby is available for free.

It’s also worth noting that you might find that you can’t access your particular flight. This could be because you’ve booked your flight through a partner airline, or perhaps an online travel agency. Remember, you may well have to contact the original airline or agency to modify your tickets.

American Airlines Allergy Policy

American Airlines does not serve peanuts in-flight but does serve other nuts, which may contain traces of peanut

  • Allergy Policy: American Airlines does not serve peanuts in-flight, but does serve other nuts, which may contain traces of peanut. The airline can not guarantee that a flight will be peanut-free, will not grant requests for a particular flight to be peanut-free, won’t provide a peanut-free “buffer zone” for allergic customers, and won’t allow pre-boarding for seat and tray table wipe-downs.
  • Be aware that American Airlines roasts nuts in the first-class cabin while the plane is in flight.
  • Special Meals: American Airlines offers gluten-free, diabetic and vegan (dairy-free) meals for some flights, which must be booked in advance.

American Airlines Upgrade Policy

Upgrades are always complimentary for Executive Platinum and Platinum Pro members. For Platinum and Gold members, upgrades on flights 500 miles or less are complimentary and flights greater than 500 miles require 500-mile upgrades. If possible, upgrades will be confirmed before departure based on elite status.

How do I use 500-mile upgrades?

American Airlines AAdvantage elite members can upgrade eligible purchased premium economy or main cabin tickets to the next service class (business or first class) on flights greater than 500 miles within North America (flights less than 500 miles receive complimentary upgrades). To request a 500-mile upgrade, log in to your AAdvantage account and find your trip to check if it is complimentary, auto-requested or if you need to manually request it. Each 500-mile upgrade is valid for a segment of your flight.

Can you use 500-mile upgrades without status?

No, only current American Airlines AAdvantage elite members can use 500-mile upgrades for flights. If you previously had status with American Airlines and have some remaining 500-mile upgrades in your account, you will need to regain elite status before you can use the upgrades. Those who do not have status with American Airlines can upgrade their flights only when they are traveling as companions of elite members.

Canceling an AA flight

  • American Airlines customers have 24 hours after purchasing their ticket to cancel it for a full refund, provided they booked the ticket at least two days before departure.
  • If the ticket was bought directly from American Airlines, request a refund online or contact American Airlines’ reservations desk, and the refund should be credited within a week. If it was purchased through a third party, customers have to call the third party to get refund details.
  • Flights booked through American Airlines’ reservations service are considered nonrefundable, so customers can get a full refund on these tickets only within 24 hours of purchase. Otherwise, the only situations that entitle a nonrefundable ticket purchaser to a refund are:
    • A schedule change that results in a change of 61 minutes or more
    • Death of a passenger or passenger’s traveling companion
    • Military orders
  • However, non-refundable ticket values can be applied toward future flights as long as:
    • The new trip begins within one year of the original ticket’s issue date
    • The customer canceled the original ticket before the first flight departed

How do I rebook your American Airlines canceled Flight?

When you’re ready to rebook your trip, you’ll need either:

  • Your 6-character confirmation (also called a ‘Record Locator’)
  • Your ticket numbers

If you don’t know your Record Locator, you can find it in the confirmation email you received when you booked your trip.

American tickets have a 13-digit number that begins with ‘001’. Keep in mind there are separate ticket numbers for add-ons like seats, upgrades, and bags.

The ticket number can be found on your:

  • Cancellation email
  • Confirmation email from when you bought your ticket – look in the ‘Receipt’ section

When you miss a flight on American Airlines, there are a few points to consider.

First, you should know that the airline will not automatically rebook your reservation for free. Instead, you’ll have to contact customer service and request that a new ticket be issued.

Second, if you missed your flight because of a delay or cancellation on another airline’s part, American Airlines may not honor your ticket at all. In this case, we recommend discussing the matter with an agent before purchasing another ticket with them.

American Airlines Missed Flight Policy

American Airlines has a strict policy for passengers who miss their flight. If you are unable to board your scheduled flight, American Airlines will rebook you on the next available flight to your destination. If you do not have a return ticket, American Airlines will provide a refund for the fare paid in accordance with its Refund Policy, which is found in Section 24 of the carrier’s contract of carriage.

If your missed flight was due to oversleeping and missing your alarm, American Airlines will not help you get to your destination. However, if you are traveling with an infant who did not wake up on time and missed his or her flight, then American Airlines will assist with any necessary arrangements (within reason).

If you have had a missed flight, it’s important to know what your rights are and what you can do about it.

If you miss your American Airlines flight, you must contact the airline as soon as possible so that they can rebook your flight. If the airline does not hear from you within 24 hours after their notification that the flight has been cancelled, they will automatically cancel your reservation and issue a refund minus any applicable fees.

If you miss your American Airlines flight by less than 24 hours or if your travel plans change after speaking with a representative at American Airlines, then there may be options available to help make up for lost time as well as money spent on unused tickets. These options include:

Rescheduling flights: If there is a delay or cancellation of a trip, then many airlines will offer free rescheduling of flights in order to accommodate passengers who were affected by the incident. However, this only applies if the delay was caused by events outside of their control (such as weather conditions). If the delay was caused by something within their control (such as mechanical problems), then passengers will have to

What To Do If You Miss Your American Airlines Flight

The rule isn’t publicly documented and it can be hard for passengers to take advantage of it, but we do know a bit about how airlines handle missed flights.

American Airlines has an internal, unpublished Late Arrival Standby Policy that says that passengers who arrive at the airport within two hours of their original departure can be accommodated as standby flyers on the next flight without paying change fees or fare increases, as long as the flight they missed wasn’t the last one of the days.

The following situations have to be applicable:

  • they arrive too late to check-in but within two hours of their posted departure time, or
  • they don’t have proper travel documents and miss their flight, or
  • they haven’t applied for or received an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) to travel to the U.S., or
  • they have mobile boarding passes but turned up at the wrong airport (only for Washington National/Dulles and Houston Intercontinental/Hobby)

*As soon as you know that you’re going to miss your flight, call the American Airlines Phone Number — especially before the flight departs. Tell them that you’re on the way to the airport but that you’re delayed because of factors outside of your control. Agents might be able to rebook you over the phone or they may just tell you to show up and see an agent, but you have nothing to lose by trying.

And if you miss the flight,

-If you’re asked to pay up for change fees and a difference in fare, try to invoke the flat tire rule to the agent or possibly to a supervisor. If you’re getting nowhere but still have some time, try to get help somewhere else before forking over hundreds of dollars

If you miss your American Airlines flight, you’ll need to reschedule.

Before you do that, though, make sure you have all of your travel documents together. You’ll need:

  • Your original ticket and itinerary, including a copy of the email confirmation if sent to an email address other than the one on your ticket.
  • Your passport and visa (if required). You can also bring forward-departure tickets, but only if they were purchased directly from American Airlines or through one of its partners. If not, we’ll need to see a paper copy or fax of your reservation before we’ll let you board another flight.
  • A government-issued ID (like a driver’s license) from both people traveling on the same reservation; these must be current and valid for at least three months after any return date on their tickets.

How Much Does It Cost to Miss an American Airlines Flight?

It costs $75 to change or cancel a domestic ticket within 24 hours of booking. After that window closes, American charges a $200 change or cancellation fee for domestic flights (coach and first-class). Fees are higher for international flights. If you don’t show up for your flight and don’t cancel, you forfeit the entire value of the ticket.

American doesn’t charge these fees if your travel dates change because of bad weather or flight delays/cancellations caused by American Airlines.

What Happens If You Miss Your Flight With American Airlines?

If you miss your American Airlines flight, there are a few things that you can do. First and foremost, you should call the airline immediately. This is especially true if it’s within 24 hours of your scheduled departure time.

If it’s more than 24 hours before your flight and you need to rebook, then there is no fee for doing so as long as you call American Airlines customer service. You will need to provide them with your confirmation number and they will rebook you on a new flight at no additional cost.

If it is less than 24 hours before your flight and you need to rebook, then there is a $250 change fee that will apply. However, this fee may be waived in some circumstances such as medical emergencies or death in the family.

Finally, if you are traveling internationally on an international ticket and miss your flight due to weather conditions or mechanical issues with the aircraft itself (such as a mechanical issue with the aircraft), then American Airlines will reimburse up to $500 per person for meals and lodging expenses incurred while waiting for a new flight out of an airport other than where their original flight was scheduled from.

What happens if you intentionally miss an AA flight on a non-refundable ticket?

“Non-refundable” can cover many fare classes. What do the specific “Detailed Fare Rules” controlling your fare state? Though AA will often cut some slack (“flat tire rule,” etc.) if there’s no advance cancellation you may be without recourse, and if you do want a chance beyond the detailed fare rules or confirmed same-day travel you could find yourself paying a change fee and the difference between the fare you purchased and the fare inventory left (assuming there are seats) for your desired flight.

Some “non-refundable” flight inventories provide greater flexibility and lower change fees; fully refundable fares usually allow flexible changes without penalty. If one is unsure of one’s trip plans, it may be worthwhile to contemplate purchasing one of these.

What happens if you miss a connecting flight in American Airlines?

The key point is the following: is this a single ticket? if so then AA is required to get you to your final destination, i.e. rebook you on another flight. They are also required to provide food and/or lodging depending on the duration of that connection.

But: if you have two different tickets, especially with different companies, then there is no obligation at all: the two flights are not connected. So, if your incoming flight (with whatever company) is delayed and causes you to miss your AA flight, then that is entirely your responsibility. AA is under no obligation to provide you with anything. You may even be considered a no-show, which implies that your second ticket (with AA) may be canceled in its entirety (including all other legs or return flights).

The best (and only) approach is to contact AA in advance, as soon as you know that your first flight is delayed, i.e. before you board it – as soon as you realize that you may not make it to your connecting AA flight. They will then rebook you – but you may have to pay for that change: a fee for changing your ticket, and possibly the difference in cost for the new flight (that all depends on the class of service you booked). But at least your ticket will remain valid for the rest of your journey.

American Airlines New ’15 Minute Rebooking Policy’ For Those Who Just Miss Their Flight

On April 20, American Airlines made a change to policy that helps customers who show up late for flights get to their destination – at no charge. The airline will let customers be confirmed immediately on the next flight with space available at no cost, but only if they make it to the airport within a short window of time.

Effective 20APR21, late-arriving customers are now able to be confirmed on the next flight if they arrive at an airport agent after check-in cutoff, but prior to 15 minutes after flight departure. They can also only book American Airlines segments this way, not segments on partner airlines (codeshares on other airlines can be changed, however).

How to Rebook Missed Flight on American Airlines?

If you have missed your flight on American Airlines, then your flight may be upgraded to the next flight that you can check online. You can check your missed flight rebooking status with the help of the below steps:

  • Go to the official American Airlines website.
  • Now click on Your Trips section.
  • Enter the last name, first name, and booking number into the given field.
  • Now you can click on the Find Your Trip tab.
  • After that, you can check whether you have any kind of option of changing your flight or not.

Points to consider when you missed a flight on American Airlines

When a passenger somehow missed his or her American Airlines flight, in that case, within two hours of flight departure, the airline may arrange another flight for the passenger. Moreover, the passenger will be offered the next available flight of the same airlines as a standby without any additional charges. Additionally, a passenger misses the last flight of the day, in such a situation, he or she will be offered a very first flight the next day.

Aside from this, if you somehow missed your flight, you may contact the airline’s office at the airport explaining the reason behind it. Or else, you may contact the agency from which you have booked your flight and see what they can do. Above all, if your flight is missed due to a delay of more than 3 hours from American Airlines, the airline will be bound to pay $700 as compensation for the inconvenience their flight delay caused.

Get Your Flight Compensation If You Missed American Airlines Flight

You can contact the American Airlines flight booking support desk at the airport or by dialing the helpline number. The representative will provide you all the required help about American Airlines missed flight. Moreover, you can get another flight booked for the same destination by contacting the flight support executives. The team will help you with this around the clock.

When it comes to the dent that last-minute bookings can put in your wallet, all airlines are not created equal. A new study from Upgraded Points recently ranked the five major U.S. airlines — Spirit, United, American, Southwest, and Delta — from most to least affordable for last-minute ticket purchases. Rankings were based on the cost of one-way tickets on the top 10 most popular domestic flight routes in the U.S., based on Google Flights data of average ticket costs over a 10-day period in February 2023. The average cost of a last-minute, one-way ticket for each of the five airlines was then calculated based on each airline and route combination.

Five Major U.S. Airlines

The winners (and losers) as determined by the study:

5. Delta Air Lines Last-minute Flight

Coming in last place for the least expensive last-minute ticket—or first place for the most expensive last-minute ticket, depending on how you look at it —is Delta Airlines Last-Minute Flight. If you wait until close to departure to book on Delta, you’ll pay an average of $369.12 for a ticket. Delta took the prize for the most expensive last-minute fight from Las Vegas to Los Angeles at more than $200, and from Denver to Phoenix, which could set you back a whopping $450 for a last-minute fare.

While usually not the cheapest option, the survey did note Delta is known for punctuality and remains one of the most reliable choices for last-minute flyers. Fares (other than Basic Economy) on Delta also include one carry-on item, Delta seat selection, complimentary snacks and drinks, and in-flight entertainment.

Remember, if you need to take a last-minute flight, you can look beyond the big five airlines. There are other airlines that may offer cheaper fares between your destinations. And, because you might not have time to shop around much, tools like Google Flights or Kayak can be helpful because they do the comparison shopping for you  (although some airlines, such as Southwest, don’t generally have fares that appear in outside comparison search engine results). In the end, knowing there are options and which airlines typically offer the best fares for last-minute travel can take some stress out of plans made on the fly (pun intended).

4. American Airlines Last-minute Flight

Coming in fourth on the list, just a notch below United, is American Airlines with an average last-minute ticket price of $282.61. Although both United and American are popular for offering flights between many popular U.S. destinations, you can expect to pay a bit more on average if you wait until the zero hours to book on American.

If you fly any class other than Basic Economy on American Airlines, your carry-on bag, American Airlines seat selection, snacks and drinks, in-flight entertainment, and seat selection are also included.

3. United Airlines Last-minute Flight

Taking third place with an average last-minute ticket price of $272.80 is United Airlines, popular for offering a wide array of destinations in the U.S. On the Los Angeles International Airport to San Francisco International Airport route — a favorite among leisure and business travelers because it’s a quick 90-minute flight between Southern and Northern California —United came in tops with the cheapest last-minute ticket at $147.

If you travel any class other than Basic Economy on United, you’ll also be able to bring on a carry-on and select your seat for no additional charge. Flights also include complimentary snacks and beverages, and a wide selection of in-flight entertainment, such as free DirecTV channels and movies on select Boeing 737 aircraft.

2. Southwest Airlines Last-minute Flight

Southwest Airlines, likely glad to have some good publicity after a recent string of cancellations due to outdated scheduling systems left thousands of flyers stranded, comes in second with an average ticket price of $233.72. The plus with Southwest: Unless you’re lugging heavy baggage, you won’t pay much beyond the fare you see. That’s because fares on the carrier include a carry-on and up to two checked bags, complimentary snacks and drinks, in-flight entertainment, and the option to change or cancel flights without fees, a rarity in the airline industry.

The one downside of Southwest is that choosing your seat in advance is not an option—you’ll be assigned a boarding group based on your check-in time (you can pay extra for an earlier boarding group), and have to grab an empty seat once you get on the plane.

1. Spirit Airlines Last-minute Flight

Although the butt of many a late-night comedy joke, Spirit Airlines tops the charts when it comes to the lowest average last-minute ticket prices, with an average fare of $170.09. Spirit had the cheapest flight from Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas to Los Angeles International Airport at $101.78. The carrier also offered the lowest-cost option from Denver International Airport to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, at $151.14, well under the average of $290.

However, it’s good to keep in mind that when it comes to Spirit, it’s not just about the fare. The airline is known for up-charging on nearly everything from bags and pre-boarding seat selection to in-flight wifi, snacks, and beverages.

How to Get Cheap Last-Minute Flights, According to the Experts

Be flexible with destinations

Travel experts often advise checking to see if flying a day earlier or later or from a nearby airport—options that are now offered on most online search sites—might result in cheaper fares. But for bigger savings, consider extending your flexibility to the destination as well. If your dates are fixed, browse the options on Skyscanner, which allows users to select “explore everywhere” as the destination. Then skim for the best value over a certain timeframe.

Take advantage of waived change fees

Depending on the airline and your situation, you’ll either receive a travel credit or a monetary refund after your change is approved. Airlines will usually waive the change fee and grant a travel credit that can be used within a year of the original booking date.31-Mar-2023

Search for fares individually

It takes some extra time, but searching for a single seat at a time—even if you’re flying with a family of four—can save you big. The reason? Those automated fare systems controlling that alphabet soup of prices are poorly designed and will only look for four seats of the same exact price, returning you a quote of $400 each, perhaps.

Take advantage of the slow rebound of business class

Keep in mind, however, that with travel as a whole returning to normal, “fares are high and demand remains strong, so low fares are not plentiful in the premium cabins the way it was during COVID,” says Brett Snyder, president of Cranky Concierge, which provides air travel assistance, and airline industry blog Cranky Flier. However, Snyder also notes that the reopening of China to the United States should result in “a flood of capacity” to China and Southeast Asia, so if you have your eye on those destinations, you could potentially score a decent deal, even last-minute.

Timing is everything (kind of)

Another good rule of thumb for travelers figuring out how to get cheap last-minute flights: There is no secret time to score the perfect deal. But generally, the best prices tend to drop off once the flight is less than three weeks away.

If it’s 21 days before you plan to travel and you haven’t seen a flight deal to your destination, you’ll want to stop waiting and book the airfare available. That’s because airlines’ automated fare systems are configured to treat later bookings as last-minute business traveler flights and price them accordingly (high, in other words). Keyes watched one trip stay at $489 for weeks, before booking on day 21; just 24 hours later, the same flight cost $630. “The 21-Day Rule is still the gold standard if there’s a flight you’re looking at and it’s getting close and you’re trying to decide whether to book or not,” he says.

Try a last-minute rewards search

Last-minute flights can be a smart time to burn off frequent flier miles, as airlines will sometimes release unsold seats as cheaper-than-normal mileage tickets. Don’t just search online for these, though; sometimes, it may be worth calling the airline’s 1-800 number or chatting online with a rep, even if the rewards app or website shows no redemption opportunities.

Beware of baggage fees

Speaking of those baggage fees: They’ve jumped significantly over the last few years, especially for the cheapest tickets on international flights. Most carriers now charge $150 roundtrip, up from $120 a few years ago, according to Orlando, which can quickly sabotage that sweet deal you just scored. He adds that baggage restrictions and fare rules for South America are even more complicated and “vary dramatically.”

Don’t be afraid to ask for a deal in person

Instead of shelling out big bucks online for an upgrade, try a more human approach—a strategy that paid off big-time for Kimberley Lovato, a travel writer who specializes in France, on a transatlantic flight from San Francisco to Amsterdam about four years ago. At the check-in desk at SFO, Lovato jokingly asked the agent whether anyone had bought one of the $10,000 business class upgrades she’d been monitoring online. No, the agent replied, but did she want one?

Not for $10K, Lovato responded, countering with $400—and, to her surprise, the agent said, “Done!”

“I’m not sure if it was because she was in a good mood or I just got lucky, but it made my flight, for sure,” Lovato says. The moral of the story: “You never know. More times than not, I’ve asked for things that seemed crazy and gotten them.”
