Airlines are a great way to discover the world and reach new places. Sometimes though, you might need to cancel your flight for various reasons. In this article, we will explain how you can cancel or change your Southwest airline flight.

Southwest Cancellation Policy

While Southwest Cancellation Policy is similar to most other airlines, there are a few key differences. In general, the further in advance, you cancel your flight, the more likely you will be able to recover some of your fare in the form of a travel credit that is valid for one year from the date of issue.

  • Nonrefundable fares: If you purchase a standard Wanna Get Away? fare, then you will not receive any refund if you cancel your flight. These tickets are only eligible for a credit if they are canceled more than 10 minutes before departure. If your flight is canceled by Southwest for any reason, then you can request a refund at that time.
  • Refundable fares: Southwest also offers Anytime and Business Select fares, both of which are fully refundable if canceled more than 10 minutes before departure.
  • Fees: Southwest does not charge a fee for changes or cancellations as long as they are made more than 10 minutes before departure. Cancellations made within 10 minutes of departure carry a $100 fee per person that is not covered by the credit card used to purchase the ticket.
  • If you’re traveling on a Wanna Get Away fare, you can cancel your reservation within 10 minutes of booking and receive full credit for future travel. After that, the ticket will be nonrefundable and nontransferable.
  • If you’re traveling on Business Select or Anytime fare, you can cancel your reservation within 24 hours of booking and receive full credit for future travel. After that, the ticket will be nonrefundable and nontransferable.

You can cancel your flight via southwest.com, by calling Southwest directly, or through a Travel Agent. If you cancel with a Travel Agent or Southwest Vacations, contact information will be provided in your confirmation email, including the appropriate phone number to call to cancel your reservation.

If you cancel your reservation (or any portion of it) at least 10 minutes prior to departure, we’ll gladly refund any unused Wanna Get Away fare (less any applicable fees) in the form of travel funds for future use. The travel funds are valid for one year from the date of issue and are non-refundable if not used by their expiration date.

Can you cancel Southwest flights?

Yes, you can Cancel or Change your Southwest flight. You can do so online or by calling the Customer Relations Department at (234) 231-8148.

To cancel a reservation online, log in at southwest.com and click Change/Cancel under My Trips. If you booked at Southwest.com, you’ll see a confirmation number labeled “Record Locator” that starts with three letters followed by six numbers (e.g., ABC123).

Enter your last name and this confirmation number to view trips currently on your account, select the trip you want to change or cancel, and then follow the prompts on the screen to complete your request.

If you booked through another website or with a travel agent, use the confirmation number provided by the third party to retrieve your itinerary online.

However, you need to cancel your flight more than ten minutes before the scheduled departure date in order to get a full refund (not including taxes). If you cancel within ten minutes of the flight’s departure time, you’ll only be able to get a credit for the amount paid. And if you don’t cancel the flight at all, then you won’t get any money back!

How to cancel a Southwest flight

To change or cancel your flight, visit the “Log in” tab on SouthWest and click on “Change/Cancel reservation.” You will need to provide your last name, confirmation number, and flight date to access your information. You can then change or cancel your flight on that page.

Here’s how:

1) Find reservation number

2) Call this number (234) 231-8148.

3) Press 1 for English, then 2 for reservations, then 3 for everything else, then 4 to talk to a human

4) Give them your reservation number, your name, and the flight number you want to cancel

How to change or rebook your Southwest Airlines flight

We all have to change our plans sometimes. If something unexpected comes up, you can change your flight on Southwest Airlines for no additional cost.

You can change or rebook your reservation online, through the Southwest website. Here’s how:

  1. Head to Southwest.com and click on the “My Trips” tab. If you’re not already logged in, enter your confirmation number, first name, and last name to log into your account.
  2. Click on “View Details” next to the reservation you’d like to change or rebook.
  3. Click the link that says “Change/Cancel” under your flight information.
  4. To change your itinerary, follow the prompts to select a new flight and submit payment for any fare difference (usually an additional fee).
  5. To cancel a flight, select “Cancel Trip” at the bottom of the page and submit payment for any applicable cancellation fee (usually $0).

Note: If you’re not able to change your existing Southwest flight, the airline has a new offering called “Wanna Get Away?” It allows you to book a brand new ticket at the current fare price, but your unused ticket will be refunded as a credit which can be applied to future travel. Unused tickets from previous purchases can also be applied as credits in place of cash.

But if you do want to change an existing Southwest flight? Here’s how it works.

How much does it cost?

Changing or rebooking a Southwest Airlines flight is completely free. You won’t pay anything beyond what you paid for the original ticket—not even taxes and fees.

Changes made more than 10 minutes after booking may require that the difference between the old fare and new fare be collected, or a credit issued for any overpayment.

Southwest Airlines Flight Change Policy

Southwest Airlines typically charges a fee to change your flight. The amount varies based on how soon you want to make your flight change.

Southwest has one of the most reasonable policies for changing a scheduled flight. If you want to change your flight, you can do so for free up until 24 hours before departure. After that point, Southwest charges $75 per ticket if you want to change your itinerary. This means that if you have a group of tickets booked together and only one person wants to switch flights, all other passengers will have to pay $75 each.

If your plans change again after this 24-hour window, Southwest offers two options:

As per Southwest Flight Change Policy, You can pay $150 per change if you want to cancel your trip entirely and rebook it at a later date. This charge applies even if you have already paid $75 for a previous flight change attempt.

If you’re still interested in traveling on another day and just want an earlier or later departure time, then Southwest will allow one free change within seven days from the original departure date (itinerary must be rescheduled within 14 days of original purchase).

How to change a Southwest flight

If you need to change your Southwest flight, there are a few ways to go about it, depending on your situation.

Changing Your Flight With No Penalty

If you’re not too far out from your original departure date and time, you should be able to change your flight without paying any fees or penalties. You can do this by going into your account and selecting “Change My Departure.” Once there, choose the option that best works for you:

“Change my departure time” — This will allow you to change your flight up to seven days before departure. The new flight date will be the same day as the original departure date unless there’s no availability on that day.

“Change my destination” — This allows you to swap flights with another destination in the same region or regionally connected city-pairs (for example, Dallas/Fort Worth to Chicago O’Hare). If you want to travel on a different day than originally booked or if there isn’t another Southwest flight available at all times during the day of travel, then this option may not work for you.

To change your Southwest flight online:

Changing your flight is easy. Southwest Airlines will allow you to change your flight for free if you cancel and rebook within 24 hours of booking your flight. If you want to change the date of your flight, there are no fees, but you must cancel and rebook at least two days before your original flight.

To change your flight, call Southwest Airlines customer service at (234) 231-8148. You’ll need your confirmation number, which is on the email confirmation that was sent after booking your flight. The agent will then be able to assist you with the changes.

If you are unable to get through by phone or if the agent cannot change your flight online, you can go to a Southwest ticket counter at any airport or city where Southwest flies directly from them (not an airport they just serve).

If you paid for your ticket with a credit card, you have to call the Southwest Reservation line at (234) 231-8148.. If you booked online or with cash, go to southwest.com and log in using your personal information and the last four digits of your Social Security number. Then go to “Manage My Booking” and enter the confirmation number of your flight as well as your last name and address. From there, click on “Reservation Details.” Scroll down to find “Request Upgrades/Changes” and click on it. On the next page, select “Change Flight” to make an alteration.

Enter the date and time of your new flight and choose whether it should be earlier or later one by clicking on either option. You’ll see how much this will cost before confirming your request by pressing “Submit.”

How to change or cancel a flight with the Southwest Companion Pass

With the Southwest Companion Pass, you can designate a friend or family member to join you for free on any Southwest Airlines flight that you book. It’s a great perk, but it also means that if you have to cancel your flight, your companion also won’t be able to fly. So what happens if one of you needs to cancel? Here’s what you need to know.

How to cancel your Southwest Companion Pass reservation

First off, since the Companion Pass is technically an add-on to your paid flight, you and your companion will each have a separate itinerary. If either one of you needs to cancel a flight due to an unexpected circumstance, such as a death in the family or sick child at home, call Southwest directly at (234) 231-8148. to request a refund for the cancelled flight. You’ll need to provide proof of the emergency.

If no emergency exists and you simply want to cancel an upcoming flight without penalty, all tickets are fully refundable within 24 hours of booking

It is crucial to confirm that the name on the reservation corresponds to who you are when purchasing a flight. Passengers occasionally pronounce names incorrectly, and these situations can happen at any time. As a result, you may update your given name with the help of Southwest’s policy on name changes or corrections. This kind of change is made easier for passengers by the airline.

Southwest’s Name Change/Correction Policy: How It Works?

The policy allowing Southwest Airlines to change its name is a good feature. It allows travelers to modify the names of their travel tickets. Name changes are only permitted under the guidelines outlined in the policy. The policy applies to changes made to a person’s name, whether complete or partial. The adjustment’s goal is to make the functionality permissible to utilize. It can be a result of their marriage or divorce.

Policy Concerning the Southwest’s Name Change

To be able to fly, you must book your journey with Southwest Airlines under the proper name. Southwest’s name correction policy permits minor revisions in cases where this is not the case. You will need to make the necessary spelling adjustments for the misspelled name as part of this. Changes can be made to the characters. Regarding the issues with the huge names, you could contact the airline.

It is significant to note that, under regulations governing name correction, a passenger may modify their last name, first name, and middle name.

Name Correction on Southwest Airlines Ticket as a Result of Marriage

Airlines are prohibited by law from ever allowing customers to change their names completely. Except for changes in the law brought about by marriage or divorce, the other person cannot adopt the former person’s name. If proper legal documentation is presented, Southwest Airlines will accede to a request to change a passenger’s last name after marriage. The only other aspect of the name that changes is the surname. The first step is to obtain the information changed formally in the case of a divorce. Court orders are necessary in order to do this.

This suggests that there might be some changes. The following paperwork is necessary for the legal name change to take effect:

If You Marry

  • Previous identification evidence
  • Existing identification documentation

For Divorce

  • Divorce orders
  • Legally change for name

Procedures for Changing Name on Southwest Airlines Ticket

The airline will give passengers instructions to follow for their convenience when a passenger’s personal information has to be changed. Passengers can modify their names following Southwest Airlines’ name correction policy. There is a restriction on the number of characters that can be put in this field. You can find it challenging to completely change your name because doing so can lead to the transfer of travel tickets.

Southwest edit Name 1

Additional conditions for making improvements or name changes on Southwest Airlines include the following:

  • The rules state that it is not permitted to change the names on transfer tickets. As a result, you can reserve or cancel your initial flight.
  • You can choose to have your last name, middle name, or first name with a few extra letters.
  • Your name and the names on the original documents must match.
  • According to Southwest Airlines’ policy on name modifications, there will not be a charge for the name update.
  • After submitting it, a person’s name can only be changed once.
  • The proper papers must be given to the airline in order to change one’s name legally.

To proceed with procedures like Southwest seat selection, the order of characters in a passenger’s name must match that on their passport or boarding paperwork.

Please be aware that you must give at least 24 hours notice before your scheduled departure for any modifications to your flight reservation. You will be one step closer to the boarding process once you finish this step. If this is the case, altering your information will be a hassle for you and the airline. Therefore, we kindly suggest that you bear the following period in mind before beginning the Southwest edit name on tickets process:

How to Make Name Changes on Tickets Bought with Southwest Airlines?

Not all travelers can apply the same procedure for changing their names due to various circumstances. This has led the airline to employ various methods for Southwest name modifications. You will first have access to the official website to make changes. This method can be used by those who want to change their names at any moment and do not need the necessary help. They have access to it everywhere. The offline approach is still another choice. You can speak with the airline about the situation.

Southwest edit Name 2

To update the name on the ticket, use Southwest’s Contact Us form

For various changes or inquiries, the Contact Us page is commonly used. Customers of Southwest can easily update the name on their tickets by using this page. This location contains the contact details you require to contact the carrier. You could decide to call in its place. You will then have the opportunity to express any issues with the name change or correction request.

  • It would help if you first direct your web browser to “https://www.southwest.com/html/contact-us/.”
  • Look for the “Contact Us” section while you are on the “Homepage.” The phone number can be found here.
  • By calling this number, you can reach the airline at any time.
  • As the carrier makes touch with you, keep your guard up. During the session, you will get to ask your question, “Can Southwest Airlines change the name on the ticket?”. Additionally, you should justify the name change.
  • The documentation that must be supplied when the name change is made can be requested from you following that.
  • Ask about expenses, if any, and be aware that a confirmation number will be mailed to you once the procedure is complete.
  • Remember that calling the carrier’s toll-free number will only cost you money.

Changing Your Name on Your Southwest Tickets Through Their Website

You can change the name that displays on your flight tickets on the Southwest Airlines website. You can input the confirmation number for your airline ticket in the visible field when you log into your account. You will next be asked to type your last name. You will be able to manage your booking after this is finished. You must do this to test the name change feature’s functionality.

A description of how to modify a passenger’s name on a Southwest ticket via the airline’s website is provided below:

  • Visit Southwest’s main website online as your initial course of action.
  • Select “Login” from the menu after that.
  • You must now enter your “Last Name” and your “Confirmation Number.”
  • Click the “Flight” button to launch your flight.
  • Following that, a menu will appear and descend from the top. From the drop-down option, select “Manage Reservation.”
  • The page will then provide a table with details regarding your scheduled reservation. You will have several options, including “Edit Name,” to pick from. You could use this choice to change the name on your Southwest ticket.
  • After that, alter your name on the website where you wish to change it, then fill out the rest of the form.
  • If there are fees, you are responsible for paying them.
  • Before it is too late, save every piece of information you can.
  • Hold off until you hear that your replacement ticket has been ordered.

Be aware that you can use this procedure to modify your reservation’s other details, including the date, the flight, the amount of luggage allowed, and other things.

The third option is to use the complaint page to change the name on your Southwest Airlines ticket.

This airline may be able to meet some requirements through its complaints website. You can try this option even though it is the best for alerting the airline to your difficulties, even though it is the least useful for making specific requests.

To access this page, go to the “Contact Us” section of this airline’s website. You can email us using a tool that will be included. You will be directed to a form if you choose this option. You can change the name on your tickets by filling out this form with your details and sending it to Southwest. These details might be related to your flight or different facets of your trip. Additionally, you can upload any necessary documents that may speed up the name-change procedure.

In order to receive a response to this form, kindly be patient. You may receive it at the email address you gave. It will inform you as to whether you can alter your name and what procedures you will need to follow for the change to take effect.

Modifying a Southwest Airlines Customer’s Name

According to Southwest Airlines’ policy, the full identities of passengers cannot be changed at any time. The straight choice is also unavailable for the change in this situation. The ticket must be canceled to avoid problems like Southwest Airlines changing the passenger name. You can cancel your reservation by calling the airline or using their website. Once you have received confirmation of this transaction, you can rebook your flight. When making this reservation, you will have the option of entering the passenger’s preferred name.

Southwest Airlines Name Change Fee

Southwest may or may not impose a fee for changing your name. This factor depends on the conditions that led to the change being made. Additionally, depending on the type of alteration, the consumer can be charged. When the Southwest Airlines name change fee is charged, the amount can sometimes reach $125.

Suggestions for Changing Southwest Airlines’ Name

There will be times when passengers are pressed for time. They might give false information when making a reservation. Customers of Southwest Airlines may therefore discover that they need to change the name on their tickets rather regularly. It will be advised that the writing not be in any manner hurried. There will not be any typographical errors as a result of this.

Here are some other ideas of this nature:

Passengers must double-check their details before submitting them to ensure that all pertinent information has been included.

When you call to make a reservation for your ticket, you must have all of this information on hand. Therefore, it is best to have all important documents close to hand and accessible at all times. You will have to present proof of your identity, including your passport, birth certificate, and other necessary legal documents. To complete the transaction, if you are making the reservation on behalf of another person, you must have all that person’s information. As a result, the information will not need to be changed because it was inaccurate in the first place.

Why Is Southwest’s Name Change Important?

The Consequences of Misspelling Your Name on Southwest Airlines

You should never use false information if you want your vacation to go off without a hitch. One of the most frequent and serious mistakes that Southwest Airlines encounters is a passenger name record that contains an inaccurately spelled name. To board a plane under a name other than your own is illegal and against Department of Transportation regulations. Therefore, if the information you supplied is inaccurate, you must change your name to Southwest.

  • Added information about this subject is provided in the sentences below:
  • Make sure that all the paperwork, including your name and identity, is identical if you want your encounter to go off without a hitch.
  • You should always thoroughly verify the information before sharing the specifics. If you do not, you run the chance of experiencing significant problems during check-in.
  • Additionally, you may be told to hang around the airport for an unforeseen period while the issue is fixed. You may miss your flight if this happens.
  • The passenger’s flight can be canceled due to the name issues due to these circumstances.
  • To summarize everything

Any misspelled names on the tickets must be fixed to ensure a comfortable trip. This is made possible by Southwest’s name-change policy. You can start the change by abiding by its guiding principles. Additionally, you can choose the method that best meets your needs when there are multiple ways to complete the same task.

How do I change my name with Southwest?

If you changed your name legally, send Southwest a copy of one of the following:

  1. Marriage license.
  2. Divorce decree.
  3. An old government-issued photo ID plus a new government-issued photo ID.

Can you change the name on the Southwest flight ticket?

From the hamburger icon in the top left navigation, choose to Look Up Reservations. Enter your confirmation number, first and last name, and click Retrieve reservation. Passengers who are eligible to modify their name will see an edit pencil next to their name.

Can I change my name on a flight already booked?

You can change the name on most flight tickets but the airline will normally charge you an administration fee to do so. Some airlines will allow you to change the name on your reservation because of a spelling mistake but won’t allow you to transfer your flight to somebody else.

How long before a flight can you do a name change?

If you notice a mistake has been made you may still amend the name on your booking and ticket to reflect the correct spelling in your passport up to 2 hours before the flight is due to depart. You cannot transfer the ticket to another person.

Does your plane ticket have to match your ID exactly?

You cannot travel under a different name. Under the TSA’s rules, the name on your boarding pass must match your government-issued ID. However, if you’re missing your middle name on your boarding pass, it shouldn’t be an issue

trigger a notification.

To change your flight, call Southwest Airlines customer service at (800) 435-9792.

If you paid for your ticket with a credit card, you have to call the Southwest Reservation line at (800) 435-9792..

How can you change your flight on Southwest Airlines?

The traveler can change their flight online or by calling Southwest.

To change the Southwest Airlines flight reservation online, you need to follow the below-listed steps:

  • Open Southwest Airlines’ official website.
  • Now retrieve the flight booking by entering your confirmation number and your name.
  • Tap on the search button.
  • Select the flight you are looking forward to changing and then hit on select a new flight. If you book a round trip, both the return and departure destinations will appear on-screen.
  • On selecting the flight, make the required changes and then confirm.
  • If you have booked your flight with any third-party website, get in touch with them and make the required changes.

Southwest Airlines flight change policy for changing international flight itineraries:

Southwest Airlines Flight Change Policy

If you are looking forward to making the desired changes to your itinerary, including international flights, then you can follow the same procedure listed above. For changing your flight, no fees are charged; only the fare difference is implied.

Southwest Airlines Flying Standby

With Southwest Airlines, the passengers are allowed for standby and same-day change for Business Anytime, Select, and Wanna Get Away Plus fares without paying any extra cost. The passengers who tend to buy out tickets under the heading of Wanna Get Away fare are available for same-day change, and the fare difference will be applicable.

  • Same-day change:

The same-day changes allow travelers to swap their flight on the travel date for a later or earlier one. The passengers can go for it as long as the seat is available with the airlines and the destination and origin station are the same. The flight can also depart on the same calendar day as the original flight. With Southwest Airlines, you can make same-day changes without paying extra fees.

  • Same-day Standby

If you can find any open seat and opt for same-day change, then you can request to add yourself to the same-day standby list to grab a seat on an earlier day of your travel flight. All of these arrangements are subject to availability. Do note here that the passengers must need to depart on the same calendar day just before their scheduled flight.

Southwest Airlines Standby and Same-day change fees

Passengers who have bought tickets under “Wanna Get Away Fare” are said to have access to same-day standby and same-day change benefits but had to pay for the pay difference. As you are not required to pay any extra fees, you will sometimes find booking a new flight a bit cheaper as well.

Suppose there will be any non-airline change (for example, you can look for a direct flight to the connecting flight itinerary). In that case, you are responsible for paying any fees and taxes accompanying the change. Here the policy is applicable for all fare levels.

Southwest Cancellation Fee

Southwest Airlines never charge you a fee to change or cancel your flight, but a fare difference may apply if you choose to change to a flight with a higher fare. Cancel your reservation in accordance with our No-Show Policy (i.e., at least 10 minutes prior to departure).

But when Southwest cancels your flight, the U.S. Department of Transportation says that the unused portion of your ticket is refundable, even if you originally purchased a nonrefundable ticket. To request a cash refund, contact Southwest customer service at 800-435-9792.

Southwest Cancellation Policy

Southwest Airlines Cancellation Policy
Southwest Airlines Cancellation Policy

There can be times when you are booking a ticket on Southwest Airlines and within the first 24 hours of getting the bookings done you feel that you have to cancel the flight. There can also be a time where just 24 hours before the departure of the flight you would want to cancel your flight tickets.

In both cases, Southwest Airlines Cancellation Policy will be applicable. In the extreme cases of canceling the tickets really late according to this policy, you shall not get any refund. But when you cancel the flight tickets in the first 24 hours you will get a full refund.

Southwest cancellation policy 24 hours:

According to Southwest Airlines Cancellation Policy 24 hours there are two extremes to the 24 hours rule. One is if you cancel your flight tickets within the first 24 hours of getting the bookings done then you will get a full refund of your booking amount. In this case, you shall not have to pay any cancellation penalty. Well, for the other extreme if you cancel the flight tickets 24 hours before the departure of the flight then you will have to pay a maximum of your booking amount as a penalty.

How much is the rebooking fee for Southwest?

Southwest never charges fees to change your flights because we understand plans change. You may be asked to pay a difference in fare if the new flight you’re choosing costs more than your original itinerary.

What happens when you find a lower price

If you happen to find a lower price, you’ll either receive a Travel Funds credit or your points back, depending on how you initially paid for the fare.

  • If you paid for the flight: If you booked the lowest-price Wanna Get Away fare, you will receive a Travel Funds credit for the difference in the fare. You have one year from the date you initially booked the flight (not the date you rebooked) to use the credit. Travel Funds credits from these fares are non-transferable and can only be used for the same passenger. For the new Wanna Get Away Plus fares, you will receive transferable flight credits that allow you to transfer your flight credit to someone else. Note that you must both be Rapid Rewards members, and only one transfer is permitted. The expiration date is 12 months from the date the ticket was booked. For more expensive Business Select and Away fares, you’ll receive a cash refund instead of credits.
  • If you used points for the flight: The difference in Rapid Rewards points will automatically go back into the account from which those points were deducted.

Is Southwest Anytime Fare fully refundable?

If you cancel, you’re eligible to receive 100% of your ticket value as a refund to your original form of payment. A Southwest flight credit from a previous reservation that is applied toward a Business Select or Anytime Fare will be refunded as a flight credit.

How do I get a refund from Southwest?

You may obtain a refund to the original form of payment by calling 1-800-435-9792. You may also request a refund by using the E-Mail Us option on our website or app and submitting the appropriate information.

Southwest Airlines Baggage fees

Southwest Airlines has the cheapest baggage policy in the industry. The passenger can check in up to two bags without paying any fee; the excess or extra fees also come with a price of $75 each.

Carry-on allowance with Southwest Airlines:

  • One standard carry-on bag: free
  • One personal item: free
  • One bag of breast milk or a pump can be carried on the flight along with the traveler’s standard carry-on allowance.
  • The airline allows car seats and strollers to be checked at the gate or ticket counter without charging.
  • The checked bags can weigh up to 23 kg or 50 pounds and should have linear dimensions of up to 158 cm.
  • Southwest Airlines is known to be the only airline that can allow passengers to carry two bags with them without paying any fees.
  • With Southwest Airlines, two bags can be carried for free; for 3+ bags, the passengers must pay $75 for extra baggage.
  • The overweight and oversized baggage fees with Southwest Airlines are $75.
  • Passengers employed in the military on duty or permanent change for station orders can be exempted from the two-bag allowance. They are never charged for oversized or overweight fees unless their bag weighs up to 100 pounds and their size is 80 inches.

Southwest Airlines Pet Reservations Fees

However, sometimes Southwest will allow more (or fewer) than six carriers. How much is the Pet Fare? The Pet Fare is $95 each way per pet carrier.

Southwest Airlines clearly stated in their guidelines that they can only allow small vaccinated dogs and cats who should be at least 8 weeks old to fly as per the domestic itineraries. It’s not at all simple, as there are many regulations that you need to follow while carrying your pet from one location to another.

Many Southwest Airlines flights allow about six pet carriers to be kept in their cabins. The count can increase or decrease per the circumstances and must be checked regularly with the airline staff. Customers can carry one pet carrier of up to two pets of the same species for every flight. Keep in mind that pet reservations are always first-come, first-served basis.

If the passengers are traveling with their pets, they must get them checked at the airport counter before onboarding their flight. If the pet is quite big and cannot fit under the flight seats, Southwest Airlines does not allow them to travel. The fee is about $95 for one way for every pet carrier with Southwest Airlines. The best thing about the pet fees is that they are refundable, so if there is any change of plans, you can receive your money back.

Southwest Airlines Seat Selection Fees

In case you want to select your seat on Southwest Airlines, then you need to know some of the important points of the Southwest Seat Selection Policy:

  • For the seat selection policy with Southwest Airlines, you can visit the official website of Southwest Airlines and the client service to select seats.
  • You can also buy out early check-in with Southwest Airlines for the best onboarding experience.
  • It is also recommended that passengers can make early check-in with Southwest Airlines for the best seats.

Southwest Airlines never allows passengers to book in advance and always allows them to select their seats while boarding the flight. If any travelers are looking forward to availing benefits of the Southwest Seat Selection policy then they have to pay the price for the same. However, the selection fee is always dependent on the itinerary and can range between $30 to $40.

Southwest Airlines Name change fees:

Southwest Airlines for name correction offers about $150 and will always be collected if the passenger wishes to go for name change fees within 24 hours of the booking. The passenger needs to present documentation to support the change and other information, and it should reflect their real name. Once the 24 hours are over, Southwest Airlines charges for making the changes for up to 4 characters, and the change fees will be about $200. Once you have opted for name correction fees, your tickets will be sent for re-issue, and you will receive a rebooked ticket in the same or higher class. If the ticket is rebooked in a higher class, the fare difference will apply.

Southwest Airlines Priority boarding fees:

Southwest Airlines is said to use priority boarding fees for positions ranging from A1 to A15. Usually, the upgrade is always subject to availability. If priority boarding is available, then you will be the first to board the flight given the below-listed circumstances:

  • Earn Elite Status:

Southwest Airlines allows travelers to earn A-List preferred status on using the airlines. They must earn 35,000 tier qualifying points for a year or 25 qualifying one-way flights. The Elite status members also receive priority boarding after Business Select.

  • Buy select business fare:

Buying a guaranteed spot in your priority boarding group offers the passengers a premium drink while traveling.

  • Buyout priority boarding:

Always be ready to pay $50, $30 or $40 if you need to board the flight anytime sooner.

  • Buy out Early Bird Check-in:

The travelers are charged $25 or $15 for the one-sided trip if they happen to buy the Early-bird check-in. But it will never guarantee you will receive a spot in A1 to A15 group, but your boarding position will surely improve.

  • Receive a Southwest Airlines credit card:

Southwest Rapid Rewards Priority credit card can allow you to book up to 4 priority boarding tickets every year on the card anniversary.

With Southwest, you do not have to sweat it in case you make an error in your bookings. The airline allows its passengers to edit their name, flight, and date.

In fact, to ensure that there is complete transparency between the passengers and the airline, they even have a Southwest Change Flight Policy.

The change flight policy of Southwest states all the terms and conditions that are followed by the airline under such circumstances. From 24-hour free flight change to the penalty on the edits, everything is present in that one important piece of document, and this is what we are going to talk about here.

Southwest Airlines Flight Change Policy

Southwest Flight Change Policy

Whether you’re booking your flight with points or by cash/credit card, Southwest Airlines allows you to rebook your flight and take back the difference in fare. Unlike other airlines that offer change fee waivers to elite status members, Southwest allows you to rebook your flight at the best available prices, regardless of what type of fare you’ve purchased.

1. Wanna Get Away- These fares are non-refundable, but they may be applied to future travel for the passenger who purchased the ticket. This fare can be canceled up to 2 hours before departure, but there will be no refund. One of the major terms of this sort of fare is that if the customer does not use it for future travel within one year of the purchase date, the fare and associated costs will immediately expire.

2. Anytime- The same no-show policy applies to this class, and it is fully refundable. If you fail to cancel 10 minutes before your flight, the fare will be converted into travel money as well. This type of fare allows you to cancel your reservation up to two hours before departure and receive a full refund.

3. Business Select- This is a fully refundable fare that can be canceled up to two hours before departure. After that, you will receive a complete refund. This falls under the no-show policy, which states that failing to cancel a booking within 10 minutes of the scheduled departure time will result in the forfeiture of all refund transactions to the passenger.

  • If you originally booked your flight by phone, you have to change it by phone. You can’t change it online.
  • There is no limit to the number of changes you can make penalty-free, as long as you do it 10 minutes before departure.

How to Change Southwest Flight Booking?

Now that you have the flight change policy clear, here is how you can go along the procedure:

  • First of all, open your browser and head to the official website of Southwest Airlines.
  • Here, you will find the Change/Cancel option in the Book Flight bar.
Click on that and let the new fields load. After that, put your First and Last name in the space. Also, go to your emails and copy the confirmation code of the flight and paste it here.
  • You must have received the mail on the same day as the booking.

Furthermore, choose the Change Flight option and hit the Yellow Search button.

Thereafter, you will get your booking details on the next window of the website.

  • Next, go through the terms and conditions, select the ticket you want to edit, and Continue to the subsequent page.
  • Here, you will have to select the type of change you want to make, and the edit window will scroll down.

The content on this page depends on the type of alteration you choose.

  • After that, put in the correct name or choose the flight from the list of available ones and hit continue.
  • Finally, tick mark the I’m not a robot option and select the Continue button.
  • Now, if you have chosen a new flight that costs more, you will have to pay the difference.

Here, you have the option to make the purchase with a card or use your reward points.

Your changed flight will appear on your screen, and you will get an email confirming the same.

By following these steps, you can easily edit your flight reservations with just a few taps on your computer screen.

Southwest Flight Change Fees

Changing your Flight on a Southwest Airlines trip is cost-free. In contrast to many other airlines, Southwest Airlines does not charge a fee in case of a customer emergency, suggesting that the business is understanding of its customers’ requirements.

If the newly selected Flight you have chosen is more expensive than the Flight you first booked, you can be asked to pay a fee difference. You will receive a refund in the manner in which you originally paid for the ticket for the difference because the newly selected Flight has a lower overall cost. Suppose the original booked passenger completes their journey before the travel voucher’s expiration date. In that case, the price difference may be retained for future use as a reusable travel voucher.

Making changes to a paid-for reservation on Southwest

There are no extra charges for changing a Southwest ticket, but you are still responsible for the difference in cost if your new itinerary results in a higher overall cost.

Alternatively, suppose the cost of your ticket decreases after you purchase it. In that case, you will get the difference either as a travel credit (for Wanna Get Away and Wanna Get Away Plus prices) or as a refund to the payment method you initially used to book the Flight (Anytime and Business Select fares).

There is no difference in the amount you will be charged if you booked a wants to Get Away Plus, Anytime, or Business Select fare and want to make a same-day alteration to your reservation. If you choose this option, Southwest will, subject to space, waive all fees related to transferring your reservation to another airline flying the same day and on the same itinerary.

Modifying a reservation for Southwest that was made using points

Being able to change a Southwest flight that you paid for using points is one of the best outcomes. The terms are the same as for a paid reservation; however, if your new itinerary has a lower total cost than your current itinerary, the difference in points will be returned to your account.

Even if your Flight’s cost has decreased after you booked it, this still applies. If you choose to “Change flight,” you will finally be able to reprice your current fare and instantly have the points difference reimbursed to your account.

Southwest’s user-friendly approach to flight adjustments means there is no reason to wait to schedule your flights with them. After all, you may regularly check the reward price to see if it has dropped, especially when a promotion like the one Southwest is presently offering is in effect.

Changing or canceling a Southwest flight during a travel waiver for the passenger

Southwest Airlines is a very accommodating airline that will let you rebook another flight of your choice at no additional cost in the event of schedule changes or weather-related interruptions.

  • The airline is quite helpful in adding potential locations to the list as soon as possible in the event of a weather alert. Snowfall, a hurricane, or any other storm could be to blame. As a result, you have the opportunity to plan and change the date of your travel to avoid any disruptions.
  • With a grace period of 14 days before departure or arrival, Southwest Airlines offers its clients a much longer grace period than any other airline.
  • As long as it is in the same region, you are even permitted to change the airport that you arrive at or depart from. If you had initially planned to fly out of Boston, you might be able to reschedule your trip so that it departs from Providence, Manchester, or Hartford instead.
  • Additionally, Southwest is well known for adjusting its schedules in all areas. When this happens, Southwest will send you an email with the subject line “Travel Notice” that includes the most recent information on your departure and arrival times.
  • You can switch to a different flight 14 days before or after the day you originally planned to fly if the altered itinerary does not work for you. And unlike most other airlines, Southwest frequently doesn’t care how little your Flight is changed. You are free to choose which flight options will serve you in the best way because there is no deadline by which you must modify your ticket.
  • You may, however, be compelled to phone Southwest to make the change rather than being able to do so online through your Southwest account if you wait too long to make the change (in my experience, more than three days after receiving an email from Southwest). This is so that Southwest may not make modifications until after receiving the email.
  • Choosing a replacement flight when your Flight is affected by a travel advisory is quite similar to the regular “Change flight” process. When you enter your flight information and make changes, a pop-up message will show that there are no additional fees when altering your travel.
  • You can seek a new time and date once you have acknowledged this notification (or city pair if it falls within the allowable region). The number of passengers who can be scheduled onto a new aircraft has no upper limit; the only prerequisite is that there must be at least one seat available for purchase. Additionally, there won’t be any prices listed. You will be notified only if space is available on the newly planned Flight.
  • If you find a route that satisfies your requirements, you are free to continue with the process of confirming the new reservation. Please be aware that you will only be permitted one modification during the event.
  • Therefore, if you confirm a new ticket and discover that the new itinerary won’t work for you, you won’t be able to reschedule your trip for free. Instead, it will be your responsibility to cover any additional fare that might be necessary.
  • The same cancellation conditions will apply if there are no viable alternatives to the Flight you have booked and you decide to cancel your reservation entirely.
  • The points you used to make the reservation would be credited back to your account if you did. Southwest Airlines’ refund policies will give you a travel credit if the reservation was paid for and was for a wants to Get Away, or Wanna Get Away Plus rate. You might be eligible for a complete flight refund if you booked an Anytime or Business Select fare.

Using a Southwest Companion Pass, how to change or cancel a reservation

It is necessary to cancel your companion’s Flight before you are permitted to amend or cancel your itinerary if you are traveling with a friend or family member using the Southwest Companion Pass.

Your traveling partner won’t be able to board the airplane with you if you decide to change your plans. On the other hand, changing your Flight requires a few extra steps. Before re-adding the companion to the reservation, you must change the original passenger’s Flight. However, because the companion’s reservation has a different reservation number, you must first cancel the reservation for the companion.

Make sure at least two seats are available on the new plane before switching. You don’t want to change your travel arrangements only to discover that you can’t bring your travel companion.

To sum up

You can be confident that you won’t be charged any penalties if you ever need to change or cancel a flight reservation because Southwest’s policies are so lenient.

Naturally, there is a chance that choosing a more expensive flight will result in a higher overall cost for your trip. On the other hand, it is reassuring to know that, should ticket prices drop, Southwest would allow you to reprice your journey within minutes easily.

If you use the Southwest Rapid Rewards program to redeem your points, you won’t have to worry about being left with a travel credit if your plans change. The points will be credited back to your account if you wish to cancel your award, and you may request a refund of the taxes and fees using the same payment method that you used to purchase the award in the first place.

As a result, you can book a flight even if you don’t know all the details of your vacation itinerary because you can cancel it without paying anything.

If you are able to compromise on certain aspects of your flight such as flight class and departure date in order to score the best deal on your trip, then the Southwest Low Fare Calendar is for people like you. When paired with a Rapid Rewards account or credit card, customers are sure to save big when they use this calendar to book travel.

[eplm_popup pop_id=”2″]

This tool ensures that you will always be getting the lowest prices Southwest has to offer on flights, but there is not a bottomless stash of dirt-cheap tickets. To make the most of this option, try to get to the Low Fare Calendar as soon as you possibly can when booking, and remember to be flexible. This tool most benefits those with wiggle room in their schedule and the foresight to book well in advance.

There are also a couple of tools on the Southwest site that make finding the cheapest fares easier. These are the “Map Search” and the “Flexible Dates” calendar.  These two are the best tools for how to find cheap flights on Southwest.

Southwest Flexible Dates Search

As an example, I’ll show you a search from Dallas to Las Vegas.  No sales were going on when this was written, so I know cheaper routes can be found during one of Southwest’s big sales.

The search will provide a calendar with the lowest fares on each date for the cities selected. If you like the fare you see, highlight the date on the calendar and click continue near the bottom.

All the fares for the day should pop up, including the low fare indicated on the calendar.

Southwest Map Search Tool

The other low-cost search tool, the “Map Search” is great for finding the cheapest destinations for travel on specific dates. Stated another way, if you know when you want to go, but don’t know where the map search is for you!

Again, you can find the link to the map search function right on Southwest’s main page. From the search page, input the departing city and dates (or dates for one way) for the trip. Next, using the slider at the top right, set the dollar amount (or point amount) to your desired level. The map search tool will display all the cities you can travel to for your set amount or less.

By putting in the month you want to travel, you can see the cheapest days to both leaves and return on, making it easy to compare different travel periods. You can search by one-way, roundtrip, and even multi-city fares, as well as search by different fare types like the lowest possible rate, anytime fares (which are refundable and changeable), or Business Select.

“Whether they are looking to travel on certain days of the week or looking for the best prices across an entire month, we encourage customers to check out our Low Fare Calendar to find some of our lowest fare offerings,” the Southwest spokesman added.

The Southwest Low Fare Calendar also takes the guesswork out of paying with points by allowing you to search for a flight by how many Rapid Rewards points each ticket would cost. Plus, as of January 2020, you can get a Southwest Companion Pass after earning 125,000 points in a year.

And if you’re thinking of going somewhere but don’t know when to go, you can toggle between months to decide when the best, and least expensive, time to fly is.

A search of flights from New York’s LaGuardia Airport to Charleston, South Carolina, for example, reveals a roundtrip flight for as low as $144 in November, which leaves more money to splurge on meals (Charleston is one of the best food cities in the country, after all).

The first step in going on a vacation is deciding to actually go, and the next step is often figuring out when to go and how much it will cost. So on your next trip, use the Low Fare Calendar to take some of the uncertainty out of the equation.

How Far Out Can You Book Southwest Flights?

Even when it comes to flight schedules, Southwest does things a bit differently.

Most airlines across the globe sell flights 11 months in advance, give or take a few days. But Southwest releases its flight schedule in big batches occasionally throughout the year.

When to Book Southwest Tickets on the Low Fare Calendar for the Best Deals

A common misconception with booking trips on the Low Fare Calendar from Southwest is that the earlier you book, the better the price. This is not always the case as it generally is with standard airline bookings.

Southwest is one of the most notorious airlines for changing ticket prices. They do it up to several times per week. Using the Low Fare calendar, you can watch prices rise and fall regularly, so be sure to monitor this often to lock an optimal price.

  • The fares don’t apply to multiple persons (there may be only one flight left at a particular price).
  • “Unavailable” indicates the corresponding fare is unavailable for the selected dates.

If you miss a flight that is not because of another Southwest delay you are SOL. Your problem, not theirs. You receive zero priority for later flights and are subject to seat availability and fare difference just as any other passenger wishing to make a flight change.

If you are A-List, there are standby options but those are not available to non-status passengers.

What happens if you miss your flight when flying with Southwest?

Southwest Airlines keeps you informed to ensure you don’t miss your flight, but if you do and find out something is wrong, Southwest Airlines is not responsible for the repercussions. Customers will be permitted to board the next flight to their destination as standby passengers if they arrive at a Southwest terminal within two hours of their planned departure time. They will also get excellent help and service from a genuine person. Even if you did, there is no cause for anxiety about missing a Southwest Airlines trip. You are welcome to adhere to the advice given below to avoid any form of inconvenience:

You should immediately notify the airline if you are convinced you will miss your flight, whether because you have already missed it or are about to do so. If you need to do either of those things, this will help you get a refund for the unused portion of your ticket or book a new flight with Southwest Airlines.

Call at least 10 minutes before departure to plead your case and say a good word. If you are about to arrive at the airport and running a few minutes late, you should also try to make your case there. You should explain your circumstances and the reason you missed the flight.

The airline will assist you in finding a replacement flight to your destination if you have missed a flight and notify them about it. If you miss a flight, you must plan a new trip and tell the airline about it. The airlines will also help you book lodging for a comfortable overnight stay if there isn’t a flight on that specific day.

There is a procedure in place at Southwest Airlines for customers who miss flights. As soon as you realize that your window of opportunity to catch your flight has passed, or if you have missed it for any other reason, such as prolonged delays brought on by heavy traffic or any other circumstance, you must contact a customer care representative team.

You will only be obligated to pay the no-show fines if you notify the airline in plenty of time that you will miss your flight. You will be charged a “no-show” fee if you don’t inform the airline of your change in plans.

If you don’t pay the fee for customers who don’t show up for their flights, your future tickets with Southwest Airlines will be canceled.

Passengers who miss their flights can notify the airlines, who will work with them to reschedule their flights at no extra cost.

Travelers can instantly request a refund for the portion of their ticket that was not used if they choose not to fly on the planned day and time and miss their flight.

Does missing a flight cost money when using Southwest Airlines?

Southwest Airlines reserves the right to revoke any pending reservations you make with the airline if you miss your flight without paying the no-show fee. You will, however, be qualified to receive a complimentary ticket for the next flight if you inform the airline about the missed flight. Southwest Airlines may charge you for missing the flight if your airline ticket is nonrefundable. You will have to pay this fee in addition to rebooking your flight to continue your journey. This fee can range from $75 to $400 per passenger.

If I miss my flight with Southwest Airlines, how can I reschedule it?

If you have any inquiries about how to reschedule a flight after missing it, go to the Southwest Airlines website or give their customer service line a call.

Southwest Airlines offers online rescheduling for those who missed their flight:

The first step is to determine whether or not you are qualified to reschedule a missed flight after entering the correct login information into your booking account.

Select “delayed or disrupted” under “manage my journey,” then enter the new date and the passenger’s last name in the section that says “added.”

You must give the following details to reserve your ticket without paying any money:

  • The passenger’s name.
  • The destination.
  • The next time you can travel.
  • The last name of the reservation.

Southwest flat tire policy

Airlines developed the “flat tire rule” to help travelers who couldn’t make their flight because of unavoidable circumstances. These travelers were compelled to miss their flights.

For instance, if you’re going to the airport and one of your tires blows out, you cannot make it in time for your flight. If this were to occur, the airline would work with you to locate the next flight and reserve a seat at no additional charge.

In today’s society, you don’t need to experience a flat tire or even miss a flight because of events beyond your control.

As an alternative, regardless of the reason you have, as long as you arrive within the allotted time, you are allowed to benefit from the flat tire rule.

Even if you overslept, forgot to set your alarm, or had the wrong departure time, you would still benefit from the “flat tire” rule.

Keep in mind that this is typically an unwritten rule. Although passengers are often unaware of the policy, check-in staff and gate officials are expected to be knowledgeable about it.

How precisely does the flat tire policy apply?

If you arrive by two hours before the time your flight is scheduled to depart, you should benefit from Southwest’s flat tire policy.

Even if you show up at the check-in desk after it has closed for the day, you can still be qualified to benefit from the flat tire rule. This would typically be 30 minutes before departure, so you should consider making changes on the same day (but more than that below).

You have the choice of showing up at the check-in counter or speaking to a gate agent and stating that you missed your flight and would like to use the flat tire rule if you arrive after departure or miss check-in.

While you can contact and start the process, problems of this sort are typically resolved once you have arrived at the airport.

An agent might be willing to book you on that journey at no additional cost and occasionally right away if a room opens up on a different airline that goes to your destination but has a different set of connections. When a spot opens up on that flight, this happens. The more likely of the two possibilities are that you will be added to a standby list if there are no open positions.

This outcome is dependent upon the fare that you booked. If you choose not to be on the standby list or are unable to be on the list for whatever reason, you will either be compelled to forfeit the money you paid for your ticket or be entitled to a refund.

Where Do I Go to Get the Best Seats on Southwest?

Your ability to be proactive and employ the same-day change rather than depending on the flat tire rule may allow you to do so in some situations.

You have the choice to ask to be put on a later flight to the same destination if, on the same day as your flight, you see that there are seats available; however, you must ask to be put on that flight at least ten minutes before the time that your flight was initially scheduled to depart.

Online free same-day modifications are available for Business Select, Anytime, and Wanna Get Away Plus fares and are also eligible.

A and A-List Preferred Members with Wanna Get Away fares are eligible for a free same-day adjustment. Still, customers must contact Southwest Customer Service or speak with a Southwest Gate Agent to take advantage of this perk.

Customers of Wanna Get Away who are not members of the A-List or A-List Preferred may elect to change on the same day, but they will probably have to pay an additional cost.

You can reschedule your flight online if you need to do so precisely one hour before takeoff. However, you will need to speak with an agent to make the change if you want to change your flight between ten minutes and an hour before departure.

It’s intriguing that Wanna Get Away clients could avoid paying the additional cost for their rescheduled travel if they adhere to the flat tire restriction. However, this is a hazardous course of action since you risk losing everything if you cannot board a new flight as a standby passenger.

If you want to Get Away travelers and put them on the standby list, you will be given preference over travelers who are not paying for their tickets, albeit you might not be given as much preference as travelers who are A-List or A-List Preferred.

Nevertheless, depending on how full the flight is, you will normally be informed if your application is accepted between ten and thirty minutes before the aircraft takes off.

Canceling

The effects of Canceling a Southwest Flight, even if you don’t think you’ll be altering it and want to get rid of it, can vary depending on the scheduled fare and the time of cancellation.

If you need to cancel a Business Select or Anytime fare reservation, you must do so at least ten minutes before the departure time to obtain a full refund. Travel reimbursement will be given to you if you fail to show up for the event.

Prices for Wanna Get Away are nonrefundable, and if you don’t cancel your reservation at least ten minutes before the scheduled departure time of your flight, you’ll forfeit EVERY cent you paid.

If you used Rapid Rewards points to pay for your reservation, those points should be credited back to your account as soon as possible.

If you cannot board the next flight or are added to the standby list for that trip, you might be forced to pay a walk-up fare. If you get your tickets in advance, you should regrettably expect to spend more than you normally would because these are frequently some of the most expensive tickets available.

Did Southwest still follow the “flat tire rule”?

Many questions whether Southwest Airlines still abides by the flat tire regulation because it is an unofficial guideline.

Flights with connecting routes

Southwest will find you another trip to your destination and reimburse your original ticket price if you miss your connecting flight due to an irregular operation, such as a flight delay or cancellation on Southwest’s part.

On the other hand, if you missed your connection because you bought a different airline ticket separately, the issue is completely your fault, and you must, if at all possible, rely on the flat tire rule.

You must obtain information regarding how the standby options for connecting flights work. You won’t have a seat on your connecting aircraft, so you may have to depend on standby for a number of your legs of the trip, which can be challenging.

To sum up

Missing your flight on Southwest Airlines does not necessarily mean the world’s end. You will have a better chance of being permitted to board the following available aircraft without incurring any additional fees if you arrive at the airport within two hours of your scheduled departure time.

The standby list will likely be your next option if this is unsuccessful. And if all else fails, you might have little choice but to book a walk-up fare or accept the refund you are entitled to.

Southwest Airlines doesn’t offer business class or basic economy, but it does have three fare categories:

  • Business Select
  • Anytime
  • Wanna Get Away.

Business Select: Southwest Airlines has a business select fare that is their top tier. This includes early boarding, bonus Rapid Rewards points per dollar spent, and either a free cocktail or beer. The ticket is fully refundable and you can change it at any time.

When you refund these tickets, the funds are applied toward future travel for the originally ticketed passenger only. Standby travel between the same city pairs and on the original date of travel is permitted with no change in fare. This is as close as it comes to first class on Southwest.

Anytime: Southwest has a fully refundable “Y” fare which allows you to change your ticket at any time without penalty. Standby travel between the same city pairs and on the original date of travel is permitted, so there usually isn’t much difference in price when you make changes.

Wanna Get Away Flights: The Wanna Get Away fares have some restrictions. For example, you might only be able to fly on that day or time. Southwest already doesn’t allow standby unless you’re on a refundable fare, but if you have an emergency (car trouble, wreck, flat tire, etc.) on a Wanna Get Away fare you may be out of luck as far as

Last-minute flights: One thing to watch out for is that Wanna Get Away fares can actually be very pricey if purchased last minute. Many times you will find $100+ cheaper rates with other legacy carriers like United or Delta when looking to purchase last-minute flights.

For example, If you are booking a flight one week out from Houston to Los Angeles in December. American Airlines was charging $175 for the round-trip while Southwest was charging $275. So just be mindful of that.

What’s the difference between Wanna Get Away Flights and anytime on Southwest?

What’s the difference between Wanna Get Away and Business Select?

So the biggest difference is the Wanna Get Away is the most restrictive fare and you earn the fewest points while the business select is most flexible with most points earned and the benefit of being in the A1-A15 boarding.

What day are Southwest flights cheapest?

As per the trend of the travelers in using the services of Southwest airlines, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday are the cheapest days when you can fly on the Southwest flight at a cheap rate.

Here’s how to rebook Southwest Flight and get some money back

Southwest Airlines is known and loved for its lack of fees. As part of the airline’s “Transfarency” policy, all Southwest passengers can check up to two bags for free and can change or cancel their flight with no fee.

Here’s how to rebook and save when Southwest flight prices drop.

Which Southwest fares can be changed?

All Southwest flight bookings can be changed or canceled without fees. Unlike other U.S. airlines — which are just loosening up change fee restrictions — Southwest doesn’t exclude the cheapest fares or require that your flight originates in a certain country.

Though Southwest doesn’t sell basic economy tickets, even their lowest fare (Wanna Get Away) doesn’t require you to pay more to be able to change or cancel your flights later. This isn’t the case when flying American, Delta, or United.

Simply put: You can always modify any Southwest flight, no matter the ticket level.

Tip: You can even change or cancel flights booked with Rapid Rewards points without fees.

Which Southwest fares can be refunded?

There’s a key difference between Southwest fare types that’s important to keep in mind. Only Anytime (mid-tier) and Business Select (top-tier) fares are fully refundable. Wanna Get Away fares (lower-tier) aren’t technically refundable.

While you can change or cancel Wanna Get Away fares, you won’t receive a refund to your credit card. Instead, Southwest will issue you Travel Funds that can be used to book future flights. These Travel Funds must be used by the original traveler and expire one year after the original purchase date. Note that Southwest extended some Travel Funds’ expiration dates until Sept. 7, 2022, as part of their policy changes during the height of the pandemic.

When you can change your Southwest flights

Southwest Airlines flight booking can be changed or canceled almost any time without fees, up until 10 minutes before a flight’s scheduled departure time. You can similarly score a price drop credit until 10 minutes before your flight — even if you’ve already checked in.

Though Southwest flights typically get more expensive the closer time ticks toward departure, if you keep your eye on the airfare price, you might get a deal.

How to rebook your Southwest flight at a lower fare

Say you checked the price on your Southwest flight and found that the fare dropped. Congratulations! But what’s the process to claim the fare difference? Let’s show you. For example, I had already booked a flight to Las Vegas for August when Southwest ran its three-day fare sale in June. I had selected a flight time I wasn’t thrilled about because it was less expensive.

When the fare sale hit, the price on my preferred flight was lower than the one I settled for. I canceled, rebooked and got a better flight plus 800 Rapid Rewards points refunded to my account. Thanks, Southwest!

You don’t even have to change your flights to do this. You can simply rebook the same flight.

It’s a pretty straightforward process. Here’s how to do it.

  1. Log into your Southwest reservation
If you’re a Rapid Rewards member, just log into your account and all of your reservations should appear there. Select the flight you want to “change/cancel.”

Southwest has a generous change policy making it easy to get a refund if you should find a sale fare. You’ll need to log into your reservation under the “Change/Cancel” tab on Southwest’s homepage.- Melissa Yeager

If you are not a Rapid Rewards member, find your confirmation code. Then select the “change/cancel” tab at www.southwest.com. Enter your confirmation code and your first and last names to bring up your reservation.

  1. Select your flight
Once you bring up your reservation, you’ll be asked which flight you want to change. Select the flights you want to reprice.

That will take you to a screen asking you to search flights. The screen should be pre-filled with your flight date. Double-check that it’s correct and then hit enter.

The next screen will show all the flights scheduled that day.

When you reprice a ticket on Southwest, the difference in fare will show up as a negative fare. Select the flight you want and the difference in fare and points will be refunded.- Melissa Yeager

If the fare for your flight has decreased, you’ll see a negative amount of points or dollars listed next to it.

Click on the flight you want to take. Repeat this process for any additional flights you plan to reprice.

  1. Get your refund
If you paid with points, the difference goes into your Rapids Rewards account.

If you paid with dollars, your refund will depend on whether your fare is refundable or non-refundable.

Refundable (Business or Anytime) fares: The difference will be refunded to your credit card.
Nonrefundable (Wanna Get Away) fares: Your refund will be credited to your original Southwest confirmation code as “travel funds.” You have a year to use your travel funds, so save your confirmation code.

  1. Using your travel funds
Here’s the only spot where things could get tricky: remembering to use your travel funds. They’re good for one year. Set a reminder in your phone or on your calendar so they don’t expire.

When you get to the Payment Method page for your next flight, look for the link that says “Southwest gift card, Travel Funds or Southwest LUV voucher.” Click on the arrow to expand that field.

You can apply for travel credits when you pay for your future flight on Southwest.com- Melissa Yeager

Click on “Travel Funds” and fill out the information, including the confirmation code from your original flight. Then click on “apply funds.” The amount will be applied to your new ticket. Continue through the booking process to complete your purchase.

What are Southwest travel funds and their deadline…

Travel funds expire one year from the date you purchased your ticket. Rebooking for a later date doesn’t reset the expiration date. Southwest.com has a page where you can check the balance and expiration date of your travel funds.

Can I cancel or change my Southwest flight? As per Southwest Cancellation Policy, you may cancel your Southwest flight at any time before departure without penalty. However, if you cancel after this time and there is no one else who wants to take the seat, you will receive a full refund minus a $75 administrative fee. If another passenger takes your seat, you will receive a full refund minus a $150 cancelation fee.

Cancellation fees for Southwest flights are calculated based on how far away from the departure date you cancel your flight. The closer to your scheduled departure date that you cancel your flight, the higher the cancellation fee will be.

Flight Changes and Cancellations Overview – Southwest Airlines

Cancel Flight Reservation – Southwest Airlines

Southwest Cancellation Policy

While Southwest Cancellation Policy is similar to most other airlines, there are a few key differences. In general, the further in advance, you cancel your flight, the more likely you will be able to recover some of your fare in the form of a travel credit that is valid for one year from the date of issue.

Nonrefundable fares: If you purchase a standard Wanna Get Away? fare, then you will not receive any refund if you cancel your flight. These tickets are only eligible for a credit if they are canceled more than 10 minutes before departure. If your flight is canceled by Southwest for any reason, then you can request a refund at that time.

Refundable fares: Southwest also offers Anytime and Business Select fares, both of which are fully refundable if canceled more than 10 minutes before departure.

Fees: Southwest does not charge a fee for changes or cancellations as long as they are made more than 10 minutes before departure. Cancellations made within 10 minutes of departure carry a $100 fee per person that is not covered by the credit card used to purchase the ticket.

If you’re traveling on a Wanna Get Away fare, you can cancel your reservation within 10 minutes of booking and receive full credit for future travel. After that, the ticket will be nonrefundable and nontransferable.

If you’re traveling on Business Select or Anytime fare, you can cancel your reservation within 24 hours of booking and receive full credit for future travel.

Southwest Airlines Flight Cancellation Fee

The below chart gives you an overview of Southwest Airlines’ flight cancellation fees in comparison with six other major airlines. In general, any major carrier in the US charges a cancellation fee of 200 USD once the 24-hour window gets surpassed. While Southwest Airlines do not charge any flight cancellation fee.

AirlineTicket Cancellation FeeSame-Day Cancel Fee

Delta200 USD (up to $450 on some international fares)50 USD
Frontier50 – 100 USD25 – 50 USD
Jet Blue75 – 150 USD50 USD
United200 USD75 USD
SouthwestFreeNone – but fare difference may apply

There are some exceptions to this rule:

If you’re traveling on a promotional fare, or if the fare has been reduced due to an oversell situation, then you may be charged a fee of up to $75 per person if you cancel your reservation within 24 hours of departure time.

If you have confirmed tickets for travel on Southwest, but then fail to show up for the flight without canceling in advance, then you may be charged a fee equal to 150 percent of the ticket price (plus taxes and fees) if you don’t call at least 15 minutes before departure time and explain why you won’t be traveling anymore.

Southwest 24-Hour Cancellation Policy

Southwest Airlines has a 24-hour Cancellation Policy. If you cancel your trip within 24 hours of the scheduled departure time, you are subject to the following penalties:

  1. For non-refundable tickets, you will be assessed a $100 cancellation fee per ticket and any difference between the fare paid and the fare for travel after the 24-hour period is calculated as a penalty.
  2. For non-refundable tickets purchased at low fare prices (e.g., Wanna Get Away® fares), you will be assessed a $100 cancellation fee per ticket and any difference between the fare paid and the lowest applicable published fare for travel after the 24-hour period is calculated as a penalty.
  3. For refundable tickets purchased at low fare prices (e.g., Wanna Get Away® fares), if you cancel your trip within 24 hours of departure, you will receive a refund less an administrative charge equal to $150 per ticket; otherwise, no refunds are given for cancellations made within this time frame.”

Ways to cancel a Southwest flight

Canceling Southwest flights is a simple process. You can cancel your flight up to one hour before departure, and you can also change or cancel your flight within 24 hours of the scheduled departure time. If you are planning to cancel your Southwest flight, here are some ways to do so:

Online: Cancelling your flight online is the fastest way to get rid of your ticket. You can cancel your ticket on Southwest’s website or by using their mobile app. If you’re cancelling through the app, you’ll need to have the confirmation number handy, which can be found in your email receipt or by checking your account history.

By phone: The next best thing after cancelling online is to call customer service at 1-234-I-FLY-SWA (231-8148) You can also chat with an agent through the website if you don’t want to talk on the phone.

In-person: If none of these options work for you, then go into any airport ticketing office and speak with an agent directly. If you’re already at the airport and need to cancel the flight, you can go to the counter and ask for a refund. You’ll have to pay a $75 fee, but it’s better than forfeiting your entire ticket. If you don’t want to pay that fee, you can get a credit on another Southwest flight within one year of your original date.

How to Rebook or Change your Southwest Airlines flight

Changing or rebooking your Southwest Airlines flight is simple. You can do it online, over the phone, or at the airport.

If you want to change or rebook your flight online, log in to your account and click on “Manage Reservations.” Select the flight that you need to make changes for, then click “Modify Reservation.” You’ll be able to see all of your current reservations here, including flights you’ve booked with others. The link to modify a reservation will only be available if there are seats available on the changed flight.

If you prefer talking directly with a representative, call (800) 435-9792 and ask for a representative who can help you change or rebook your flight. You can also speak with representatives at airports across the country by visiting one of their customer service desks.

If you’re booking with points and miles, Southwest will charge you $50 per person to change or cancel an award reservation. You also have the option of using points to cover any difference in price. If you need to make changes or cancel an award ticket within 24 hours of departure, however, there’s no fee at all — just call Southwest Airlines Reservations and ask them to rebook your flight.

You can change your flight online if it’s within 24 hours of departure by logging into your account on southwest.com and selecting “My Trips.” From there, select “Change Flight” under “Manage My Trip.” Select the date you’d like to fly instead, then follow the prompts to select your new flight options.

How Do I get a refund from Southwest Airlines?

Southwest Airlines offers a refund on your ticket if you cancel your trip. The airline has a 24-hour cancellation policy and will refund your money up to 10 minutes after you cancel. However, there are some exceptions to this rule that we’ll explain below.

While Southwest Airlines doesn’t have a fee for changing or canceling flights, it does charge change fees for some changes and refunds for others. To keep it simple, here’s what you need to know about canceling and changing Southwest flights:

If you cancel your flight before the departure time, you’ll get a full refund of the fare paid minus any taxes or fees that were collected at the time of purchase (these fees include things like booking fees). If you purchased with a credit card, then those fees also can be credited back to your card by calling customer service within 72 hours of booking your flight. If you purchased with cash or debit card, then tickets are nonrefundable unless they’re refundable by Southwest under its normal rules (see below).

If you show up at the airport on time but don’t board the plane, then Southwest will give you a full refund of any unused fare paid again minus taxes and fees — this includes tickets purchased with cash or debit.

Refund on Southwest Airlines For flights booked with cash

We will gladly refund your cash ticket on Southwest Airlines if you are unable to travel.

In order to receive a refund on your Southwest Airlines flight, the following conditions must be met:

You must cancel your reservation at least 10 minutes prior to scheduled departure. If you cancel after this time, you will forfeit any refund for the fare paid.

If there are changes in the schedule, we will make every effort to accommodate them. However, if we cannot make these changes without exceeding our time limits, we may have to cancel your trip. If this occurs and you have purchased a ticket through Southwest Airlines, you will receive a full refund of the amount paid for that ticket.

We reserve the right to deny refunds on tickets purchased with cash if there is no record of payment or if we do not receive the request within 24 hours of departure time or sooner if possible under these circumstances.

Refund on Southwest Airlines For flights booked with Southwest Rapid Rewards points

Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards members can now request a refund for flights booked with Southwest Rapid Rewards points.

If you book a flight using Rapid Rewards points, you can now ask for a refund in the form of a credit on your Rapid Rewards account. However, there are some restrictions:

  • You must cancel your ticket at least 7 days before the flight’s departure date.
  • You cannot cancel tickets that were purchased using cash or credit card (rather than points).
  • You must be flying on Southwest Airlines and be in good standing with the airline to request a refund.
